Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,7, European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder), course: Marketing - International Management, language: English, abstract: Significant transformations have shaped the world in recent years and the concept of globalization has become one of the most controversial issues. Numerous studies have put their focus on the consequences of globalization on our lives. However, no agreement yet exists among scholars (Guillen, 2001). Speaking of globalization means understanding all its diverse dimensions and actors as well as discussing their transformative power. In his recent book "From Walmart to Al Qaeda" Murillo (2015) offers a multidisciplinary approach considering all the structural elements such as cultural, technological, economic, financial, political and institutional ones that shape and at the same time are shaped by globalization. By discussing the concept of globalization and its impact on each dimension, various approaches are used for diagnosing the direction of change and perils as well as benefits. In addition to that, Murillo (2015: xiii) suggests that "the very complexity and scope of globalization means any discussion requires examination of the various schools of thought, theories and approaches [...]" in order to gain a better understanding of the world. Even though institutional theory is closely linked to the process of globalization and has been widely applied to diverse fields when analyzing the consequences of globalization, this approach remains widely untouched in Murillo's (2015) book. Institutional theory has gained significant importance in sociological research and has become a leading theoretical foundation, as there is an increased importance of understanding that countries differ in terms of institutions (Diehl and McFarland, 2010:1740-1741). As "institutions are all around us" (Cornelissen, Durand, Fiss and Vaara, 2015:10) they do not only form a"

Book excerpt: "From Walmart to Al Qaeda explains the fuzzy, complex and seemingly incomprehensible concept of globalization. What is globalization? What are the core topics, theories and competing ideologies? Are we walking towards homogenization or towards a global collision of cultures and identities? The potential risks and challenges for the global economy, corporations and political regimes are acknowledged by most but not fully understood. This book provides a refreshing new look at how society is being shaped by globalization and how these apparent destructive patterns can be both explained and potentially remedied.Globalization is both a concept and a cliché. It is a term that is used to explain an economic system or the state of the world. David Murillo sets out the questions and identifies the interrelationships of different disciplines to both understand the issues and also find solutions. The book discusses globalization and current attempts to conceptualize and measure it. There are theoretical and ideological debates on whether globalization is inevitable and the various alternatives for interpreting how the world works.Accompanying Teaching Notes are available on request with the purchase of this book."--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: In his first novel, David McDonald - an economics student at The University Of Guelph and founder of The Global Millennial - dives into the globalization discussion with a particular focus on how economic theory and history can help answer one pressing question: Has globalization been helpful or detrimental to the sustainability of our planet, and advancement of our species? McDonald begins the discussion with a brief, yet detailed summary of the history of global trade. Although it is difficult to say when true globalization began, he argues that the framework for international trade was established much sooner than some may expect. A majority of the book focuses on globalization in the 21st century. McDonald discusses the impact of internationalism on various regions and their subsequent powers; Asia, Europe, Africa, and North America are all discussed in detail throughout the book with reference to many notable events that continue to be important points of discussion to this day. Brexit, climate change, the financial collapse of 2008, China's role in the global economy, and the threat of nuclear war are all notable topics strung throughout this work.Authentic, controversial, and rigorously documented, A Global Convergence delivers an indispensable discernment of today's central issues in a way that anyone can enjoy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberal Languages reinterprets twentieth-century liberalism as a complex set of discourses relating not only to liberty but also to welfare and community. Written by one of the world's leading experts on liberalism and ideological theory, it uses new methods of analyzing ideologies, as well as historical case studies, to present liberalism as a flexible and rich tradition whose influence has extended beyond its conventional boundaries. Michael Freeden argues that liberalism's collectivist and holistic aspirations, and its sense of change, its self-defined mission as an agent of developing civilization--and not only its deep appreciation of liberty--are central to understanding its arguments. He examines the profound political impact liberalism has made on welfare theory, on conceptions of poverty, on standards of legitimacy, and on democratic practices in the twentieth century. Through a combination of essays, historical case studies, and more theoretical chapters, Freeden investigates the transformations of liberal thought as well as the ideological boundaries they have traversed. He employs the complex theory of ideological analysis that he developed in previous works to explore in considerable detail the experimental interfaces created between liberalism and neighboring ideologies on the left and the right. The nature of liberal thought allows us to gain a better perspective on the ways ideologies present themselves, Freeden argues, not necessarily as dogmatic and alienated structures, but as that which emanates from the continuous creativity that open societies display.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contemporary world is complex and is characterized by new normative challenges with regards to living conditions and political organization, both within the borders of sovereign states and globally. Such challenges require interdisciplinary analyses of a number of intertwined subjects. Varieties of Liberalism: Contemporary Challenges presents an important contribution to this pressing task. Relying on the cooperation of UiT The Arctic University of Norway research group Pluralism, Democracy and Justice, and the Civic Constellation project from Spain’s National Research Fund, the book is the outgrowth of the conference “Themes in Contemporary Ethics and Political Philosophy”, held in Tromsø in August 2012. An international array of scholars from universities in Brazil, France, Norway and Spain are brought together here, and combine normative reflections, conceptual analysis, case-studies and historical accounts. Philosophical liberalism provides the dominant perspective in contemporary political and social philosophy, and the majority of the authors take one version or another as their starting point, bringing together various different critical perspectives. Since it is crucial to sort out what an embracing of liberalism means and what a criticism of liberalism is directed at, the introduction of the book situates the chapters in relation to the disparate uses of ‘liberalism’. The sixteen chapters are distributed into three parts, namely, Free Speech and Deliberation, Citizenship and Democracy, and Justice, Borders and International Law. Of interest to a wide, interdisciplinary readership, Varieties of Liberalism responds to questions such as: Do contemporary democracies live up to their own ideals? How do these democracies cope with the issues of free speech, religious diversity, migration, indigenous communities, and the scientific and technological development? How ought civic education to be regulated in pluralist democracies? Who are the rightful owners of common goods? As is evident from this representative list, the book addresses both the intellectual and the practical challenges of contemporary liberalism.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Personnel and Organisation, grade: A, The University of Liverpool, language: English, abstract: Globalization of businesses has provoked the development of international supply chains. A Supply chain manages all the activities aimed at meeting the customer needs and maximizing the effectiveness of the process. This process starts from the extraction of raw materials to the customer receiving the finished good. Its aim is to satisfy the customer. Supply chain management aims at the company achieving a sustainable competitive advantage. This has initiated the application of just-in-time systems. Just-in-time is an inventory scheduling technique. It was developed as an operations control and planning philosophy that assisted manufacturers attain consistent improvement in quality of products and productivity of the processes. JIT encompasses stock less production and zero inventories. It broadly focuses on elimination of waste from producing more than is required, waiting time, waste on transportation cost, inventory, processing and product defects throughout the organization. JIT philosophy encompasses the following principles. The first principle is the operation excellence which requires the organization to be committed to continuous process and product improvement at all departments focusing on proper customer services. The second principle is value added processes which ensures that those processes that add no value to the customer or product are eliminated as they only add on cost of production; every aspect of the processes in the organization should be aiming at continuous improvement. Lastly, JIT techniques are focused towards total quality management and empowerment of employees (Ross, 2004).

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, University of Mannheim, language: English, abstract: Although cultural and contextual settings vary across the world, there is of course one level at which HRM is clearly universal: all companies have to manage and hence to utilize Human Resources. A few questions might arise when exploring the convergence-divergence issue in HRM. How to define HRM and which particular HRM areas and practices should be analyzed for making hypotheses about the absence or presence of convergence? Which time horizon should one apply and how HRM convergence-divergence to be conceptualized? Can we find sufficient evidence for determining whether there are common trends of HRM becoming more similar or contrary more dissimilar over time and across nations? Are US derived HRM practices universally applicable to, for example, the European context? What are the specific HRM areas where researchers can identify developments towards convergence or divergence? This bachelor thesis addresses the above mentioned questions in order to provide an overview about the most important issues in the convergence-divergence debate. The focus of this study is not to identify a winning side but instead to present some of the main concepts and best-available evidence for each perspective. Thus, this study aims at enhancing the readers understanding about relevant controversial subjects in the convergence-divergence discussion.

Further, the effectiveness of these concepts and the readiness for unpredictable changing environments are evaluated. The conclusion in chapter five summarises the results of this paper. In order to response to continuously changing environments efficient and effective concepts are required. The overall performance of manufacturing organisations depends on the level of adaption and implementation of these concepts.
