Book excerpt: Nigeria has experienced significant economic progress since publication in 1999 of the first edition of Perspectives on Nigerian Economic Development. Two main drivers of this progress have been the beneficial return to democratic rule and the implementation of key economic reforms, particularly in pursuing external debt relief, implementing excess crude account to stabilize revenue volatility, introducing contributory pension schemes and taking steps to privatize key sectors such as telecommunications. This volume is focused on issues relating to good political and corporate governance and national development; budget and fiscal policy; the Nigerian financial and capital markets and banking. Part one deals with the issues of globalisation and how Nigeria can play in the emergent environment. Part two (Managing the Nigerian Economy), Part three (Strengthening the Nigerian Banking Sector and Part Four (Entrepreneurship and Corporate Governance) proffers ways and means of handling these intertwined aspects of national challenges. The final part - Key Sector Issues deals with three vital areas - Education, Transportation, and Oil and Gas.

Book excerpt: Globalization has over the years been widely celebrated as one of the keys to economic growth and development. The international competitiveness resulting from the integration of the world into a global village has brought tremendous progress to the world economy. Regrettably, since the integration of the Nigerian economy into the global economy, the growth pattern of the economy has remained below expectation when compared with other countries of the world. This had in the recent time generated hearted debates among the Nigerian economic researchers on whether globalization is actually a key to economic growth. Thus, the study uses the contemporary econometric techniques of cointegration and error correction mechanism within the framework of the Pesaran et al. (2001) ARDL model to examine the impact of globalization on economic growth in Nigeria. Using annualized secondary time series data from 1970 to 2015, the study reveals that trade openness; financial integration and foreign direct investment have significant positive impact on economic growth in Nigeria. Thus, adequate mechanism should be put in place to ensure that globalization brings about the desired pace of economic growth.

Book excerpt: There are debates regarding the effect of globalization on national economies, and whether or not trade openness has a significant positive or negative influence on economic expansion and development. Thus, this study is aimed at investigating the relationship between trade globalization and Nigeria's economic advancement. The autoregressive distributed lags (ARDL) model was employed for the time series data: real GDP, openness, foreign direct investment and population growth over the period 1981-2017. The findings of this estimation revealed that population growth is significant but inhibitor of economic prosperity (real GDP) in the short-term. However, the significant and long-run determinants of the real GDP are population growth and trade openness but not foreign direct investment. Furthermore, the Granger Causality test revealed that real GDP granger causes population growth. The study therefore concluded that trade openness and globalization are necessary for Nigeria's economic expansion and development. Consequently, the study opined that the land border closure policy recently implemented by the Nigerian government might necessitate a significant reassessment so that the economic development projections of the country are not hindered.

Book excerpt: Africaís New Public Policy: Imperatives for Globalisation and Nation-building provides a comprehensive analysis of globalisation and democracy, from an African perspective. It also provides policy imperatives that are aimed at seeking solutions to the myriad challenges emanating from managing the consequences of globalisation in Nigeria and other African countries. The author attempts to determine the extent to which public administration principles ñ in Nigeria in particular, and the rest of Africa in general, as well as in other parts of the developing world ñ underpin the management of the effects of globalisation within a democracy and nation building projects. Africaís New Public Policy will not only be a useful resource for public policy decision-making on globalisation issues, but it will also serve as a credible reference material for public sector practitioners, scholars in international relations, as well as officials involved in the diplomatic work environment. It also includes a comparative analysis on how Nigeria and South Africa have handled some of the globalisation and democratisation challenges facing their respective countries under the administrations of Presidents Obasanjo and Mbeki respectively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of this research, the impact of global capitalism on economic development in Nigeria, sought to understand the role global capitalism has played in Nigeria’s economic development. Nigeria is presently considered a third-world country; however, researchers and economic observers expect that, based on the number of resources in the country, the standard of living of its citizens should be a lot better than it is currently. It is relevant to question why this is so, especially given that capitalism, which is so successful in many developed countries today, was introduced to Nigeria officially in 1986 by the World Bank through the structural adjustment plan. Through the scientific research process, this research examines why this is so and whether capitalism has aided or hindered development. While it is possible to argue that if Nigeria is underdeveloped today, capitalism has not done it any good, the country’s underdevelopment may not entirely be the fault of capitalism. Instead, it may have been caused by other intervening variables. This research examined the role of all those intervening variables in creating underdevelopment in Nigeria. Variables such as slavery, colonialism, and imperialism were examined to analyze their impact on the level of development in Nigeria. A neo-liberal view was also examined to balance the neo-Marxist view and other radical perspectives to understand Nigeria’s problems. Finally, internal factors such as corruption and conflicts were also examined to have an overview of the internal perspective of the problems of development in Nigeria. However, being the focus of this research, more critical analysis and data gathering was performed to examine the role of global capitalism on development in Nigeria. The literature review examined different contrasting opinions to understand where the debate lay on the topic at hand. Dependency theory was also introduced as the theoretical framework for analyzing the subject matter and interp

Book excerpt: Globalisation is often conceptualised as a triumphant juggernaut, a massive inexorable force transforming economies, politics and culture, and inevitably vanquishing endemic poverty in poor countries. This is in line with what modernisation theorists envisaged in the 1950s and 1960s. Unfortunately, globalisation just like modernisation has failed Africa. Globalisation has intensified poverty and underdevelopment and the consequences are reflected in the huge debt burden of most Third World countries. Globalisation and Africa: Reverse Robin Hoodism calls for a new international economic order in which Africa and other Third World countries will participate as interdependent entities, and by so doing end the symmetric relationship in which the wealthy countries enjoy huge advantages - financial, economic, and others, over poor countries.

Book excerpt: This book explores the causes and consequences of market failure in bridging societal differences to create a shared economy. It questions the current world order and evaluates socio-economic gains in reference to the social origins of the economic agents. With a need to counterbalance economic growth with social equality and environmental sustainability, the book proposes innovative approaches to address key questions on the contemporary global economy such as, "Is the Global socio-economic order supportive of the pursuit of rational and enlightened self -interest?", "Is it a unipolar power centre and neoliberal economic policy regime?", "Can the system reinvent itself?", etc. One approach encourages going back to the golden past and making things "great again", insisting that history has ended and the failures of old global institutions be blamed on the "Clash of Civilizations". Another approach advocates giving up the intellectual comfort zone of elegant but irrelevant neo-liberal explanations of global challenges and asking new questions that take academic debate to the public square. The book examines the internal challenges and contradictions that cause disintegration and proposes alternative ideas and practices in moving the global community beyond the free market regime. The book will appeal to students and academics of development studies, political economy, political science, sociology, as well as policymakers and public opinion makers interested in creating a new egalitarian global society.

Book excerpt: While Africa is too often regarded as lying on the periphery of the global political arena, this is not the case. African nations have played an important historical role in world affairs. It is with this understanding that the authors in this volume set out upon researching and writing their chapters, making an important collective contribution to our understanding of modern Africa. Taken as a whole, the chapters represent the range of research in African development, and fully tie this development to the global political economy. African nations play significant roles in world politics, both as nations influenced by the ebbs and flows of the global economy and by the international political system, but also as actors, directly influencing politics and economics. It is only through an understanding of both the history and present place of Africa in global affairs that we can begin to assess the way forward for future development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nigerian state has been oil-rich for decades, and yet perennially incapable of converting its oil resources into wealth for ordinary Nigerians. Adeoye O. Akinola tackles this “vexed” oil question by examining the political economy of efforts to deregulate the Nigerian downstream oil industry. Focusing on themes of globalization and democratization, this book considers how a resource-rich developing country like Nigeria can exploit the opportunities of globalization and navigate the pressures of democratization and the challenges of liberalization. Pairing sophisticated theoretical frameworks with firsthand accounts from actors in the oil industry, this book identifies the root causes of Nigeria’s development struggles and offers practical policy solutions for successfully deregulating the oil sector. For public officials and policymakers as well as researchers, this book offers a critical new lens on the future of natural resource management in Nigeria and the Global South.
