Book excerpt: In India, The Move Towards Globalisation And Free Trade Coincided With The Process Of Structural Reforms And Economic Liberalisation That Began In July 1991. Since Then The Country Has Seen A Significant Integration Of Markets In Commodity, Services, Finance And Technology With Other Countries. Right At The Outset Of Globalisation, Some Persons In India Like Those In Other Developing Countries Were Against This New Trend, Perceiving It As Elite-Driven And Incapable Of Bringing Qualitative Change In Peoples Lives. Fear Of Lagging Behind In The Race With The Advanced Countries, Which Would Ultimately Capture A Lion S Share In The Global Market, Had Further Led Some People To Oppose Globalisation. But The Present Scenario Is Altogether Different. India S Apprehensions About Globalisation Have Been Removed To Some Extent. Economic Liberalisation Has Paved Way For Rapid Technological Progress For India While Globalisation Has Given Its Young Talent Vast Employment Opportunities In America And Europe. Today, India Has Become A Big Market For Multinational Giants. There Is Hardly A Big-Name Company That Is Not Outsourcing To India. India Has Developed Several Hubs Of Information Technology-Enabled Services, Business Process Outsourcing, Research & Development, Pharmaceuticals And Telecommunication. On The Contrary, The Advanced Countries Like The United States Are Now Fearing Globalisation Because They Are Losing Jobs In The International Corporate World To Indian Technical Experts. Globalisation And Liberalisation Have Brought New Opportunities In Our Country In Trade, Business, Services And Employment. The Atmosphere Is Vibrant. The Younger Generation Is Educated, Talented And Ambitious. The Opening Of International Markets Has Led To Earnest Endeavours To Improve Product Quality To Secure Marketing. Internationalisation And Privatisation Of Education Has Led To Updating Of Curriculum And Bring Technical Manpower That Would Implement The Latest Technology In Manufacturing And Servicing. The Globalisation Should Be Made An Instrument Of Rapid Economic Development In A Way That Its Benefits Reach All Regions Of The Country And All Sections Of Society. The Volume Has Wide Coverage Including In Its Spectrum The Structural Changes In The Indian Economy. Contributors To This Volume Have Not Only Recognised The Reality Of Globalisation As A Process Of Change But Have Also Comprehensively Dealt With The Major Issues And Concerns For India In The Context Of Globalisation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Has there been a shift in agrarian policies in India since liberalisation? What has been the impact of these policies on new class formation and consolidation of existing ones? Did proprietary classes with close relations to the state influence the formulation of these policies? Do class-state relations have to be uniform across nations under globalisation? Studying post-liberalisation India, this book answers these questions by scrutinising the tenets of agrarian policies of three states - Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, and Karnataka. In doing so, it analyses the political economy of agricultural policy and the class-state relations operating in the country. Two common arguments encountered in post-liberalisation India are that politics ought to be studied through the lens of identity, caste, language, and religion, and that under globalisation, peculiarities of the nation state have been ironed out. While arguments around these themes are seen in existing literature, the way class interest is consolidated as political settlement and the state's role in creating and maintaining classes have received limited attention. Studies on Indian politics have focused mainly on communal and caste identities, and this book adds to the understanding by arguing that class plays a critical role in agrarian politics and politics in general; class is defined as an economic and political criterion. It concludes that class and its relation to the state has come to occupy a defining role in the politics of new India and, thus, it becomes imperative to conduct this study through the lens of political economy"--

Book excerpt: Agriculture productivity, growth and regional change in post-colonial India from a spatial perspective are yet to be rigorously examined. In particular, the impacts of economic liberalisation, globalisation and deregulation are not being empirically investigated at a small-area level using advanced statistical and spatial techniques. Understanding the process of regional formation and the rapid transitioning of agricultural landscapes in the Post-Liberalisation phase is pivotal to developing and devising regional economic development strategies. This book employs advanced methods to empirically examine the key characteristics and patterns of regional change in agricultural growth and productivity. It offers insights on changes in agricultural production and practices since the colonial period through to the Post-Liberalisation phase in India. It also incorporates the key public policy debates on the progress of India’s agricultural development with the aim of formulating spatially integrated strategies to reduce rapid rise in the regional convergence and to promote equitable distribution of strategic government investment.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural policy reform is one of the major challenges facing India today. Such reform is required to reduce poverty through faster agricultural growth and to promote more sustainable use of natural resources while ensuring food security. Subsidy policies that promote the use of fertilizer and of electricity for groundwater irrigation are in particular need of reform. While subsidies for these two inputs played a crucial role in achieving India's Green Revolution, they have been criticized during the past decade for benefitting large-scale farmers more than smallholders, placing a fiscal burden on the state, and having negative environmental effects. By analyzing the evolution of these input subsidy policies and examining the political processes involved in efforts to reform them, this study throws new light on the factors that have so far prevented a move toward more pro-poor and environmentally sustainable agricultural input policies in India. The authors show that electoral politics, institutional factors, and policy paradigms or belief systems all play an important role in blocking reform. They identify several policy reform options as well as political strategies that can overcome past obstacles to reform. Community-based policy solutions, new coalitions for policy reform, fresh approaches to the policy debate, innovative and consensus-oriented forms of deliberation, and effective use of research-based knowledge can all make positive contributions to Indian policy reform. The analyses and proposals presented in this study will be a valuable resource for policymakers and stakeholders concerned with the politics of agricultural development.
