Book excerpt: This report contains results of structural analyses performed in support of the NASA structural testing of an all-composite stitched/RFI (resin film infusion) wing stub box. McDonnell Douglas Aerospace Company designed and fabricated the wing stub box. The analyses used a global/local approach. The global model contains the entire test article. It includes the all-composite stub box, a metallic load-transition box and a metallic wing-tip extension box. The two metallic boxes are connected to the inboard and outboard ends of the composite wing stub box, respectively. The load-transition box was attached to a steel and concrete vertical reaction structure and a load was applied at the tip of the extension box to bend the wing stub box upward. The local model contains an upper cover region surrounding three stringer runouts. In that region, a large nonlinear deformation was identified by the global analyses. A more detailed mesh was used for the local model to obtain more accurate analysis results near stringer runouts. Numerous analysis results such as deformed shapes, displacements at selected locations, and strains at critical locations are included in this report. Wang, John T. Langley Research Center...

Book excerpt: The analytical and experimental results of an all-composite wing stub box are presented in this report. The wing stub box, which is representative of an inboard portion of a commercial transport high-aspect-ratio wing, was fabricated from stitched graphite-epoxy material with a Resin Film Infusion manufacturing process. The wing stub box was designed and constructed by the McDonnell Douglas Aerospace Company as part of the NASA Advanced Composites Technology program. The test article contained metallic load-introduction structures on the inboard and outboard ends of the graphite-epoxy wing stub box. The root end of the inboard load introduction structure was attached to a vertical reaction structure, and an upward load was applied to the outermost tip of the outboard load introduction structure to induce bending of the wing stub box. A finite element model was created in which the center portion of the wing-stub-box upper cover panel was modeled with a refined mesh. The refined mesh was required to represent properly the geometrically nonlinear structural behavior of the upper cover panel and to predict accurately the strains in the stringer webs of the stiffened upper cover panel. The analytical and experimental results for deflections and strains are in good agreement. Wang, John T. and Jegley, Dawn C. and Bush, Harold G. and Hinrichs, Stephen C. Book excerpt: This standardization handbook has been developed and is being maintained as a joint effort of the Department of Defense and the Federal Aviation Administration. It provides guidelines and material properties for polymer (organic) and metal matrix composite materials. This handbook aims to provide a standard source of statistically-based mechanical property data, procedures, and overall materials guidelines for characterization of composite material systems. This volume provides methodologies and lessons learned for the design, manufacture, and analysis of composite structures and for utilization of the material data provided in Volume II consistent with the guidance provided in Volume I. It covers processes and effects of variability; quality control of production materials; design and analysis; structural behavior of joints and reliability; thick section composites; and supportability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory was established in 1917 as the Nation's first civil aeronautics research laboratory under the charter of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). With a primary mission to identify and solve the problems of flight, the highly productive laboratory utilized an extensive array of wind tunnels, laboratory equipment, and flight research aircraft to conceive and mature new aeronautical concepts and provide databases and design methodology for critical technical disciplines in aircraft design. Prior to World War II (WWII), research at Langley on such diverse topics as airfoils, aircraft structures, engine cowlings and cooling, gust alleviation, and flying qualities was widely disseminated within the civil aviation community, and well-known applications of the technology to civil aircraft were commonplace. During WWII, however, the facilities and personnel of Langley were necessarily focused on support of the Nation's military efforts. Following WWII, aeronautical research at Langley was stimulated by the challenges of high speed flight and the associated problems that were exhibited by high-speed aircraft configurations operating at relatively low speeds, such as those used for takeoff and landing. Much of Langley's research during that time would ultimately be useful to both the civil and military aviation industries. With the emergence of the new National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1958, Langley retained its vital role in aeronautical research and assumed a leading position as NASA Langley Research Center, along with Ames Research Center, Lewis Research Center (now Glenn Research Center), and Dryden Flight Research Center. Langley's legacy of critical contributions to the civil aviation industry includes a wide variety of activities ranging from fundamental physics to applied engineering disciplines. Through the mechanisms of NASA technical reports, technical symposia, meetings with industry, and cooperative projects, the staff of Langley Research Center has maintained an awareness of the unique problems and challenges facing the U.S. civil aviation industry. With a sensitivity toward these unique requirements, Langley researchers have conceived and conducted extremely relevant research that has been applied directly to civil aircraft. These applications have resulted in increased mission performance, enhanced safety, and improved competitiveness. This document is intended to be a companion to NASA SP-2000-4519, "Partners in Freedom: Contributions of the Langley Research Center to U.S. Military Aircraft of the 1990s." Material included in the combined set of volumes provides informative and significant examples of the impact of Langley's research on U.S. civil and military aircraft of the 1990s. As worldwide advances in aeronautics and aviation continue at a breathtaking pace, documenting the significant activities, individuals, and events that have shaped the destinies of U.S. civil and military aviation has become increasingly important. In the research and development communities, many instances have occurred where fundamental, groundbreaking efforts have been forgotten or confused because of turnover of staffs, loss of technical records, and lack of documentation. This volume, "Concept to Reality: Contributions of the NASA Langley Research Center to U.S. Civil Aircraft of the 1990s," highlights significant Langley contributions to safety, cruise performance, takeoff and landing capabilities, structural integrity, crashworthiness, flight deck technologies, pilot-vehicle interfaces, flight characteristics, stall and spin behavior, computational design methods, and other challenging technical areas for civil aviation.
