Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Maritime Readers (Profusely Illustrated) Gesner, Forrester, Macgregor, and many others, have been inserted. The illustrations include views of the cities and other interesting Maritime scenery, while the books are printed on superfine paper, and bound in extra cloth. In their enterprise the publishers have spared no expense to make the new series the best, cheapest, and most suitable for the schools in the Maritime Provinces of Canada; and while making arrangements for their introduction in Nova Scotia, they respectfully solicit the co operation of teachers and all others interested in educational progress. All that is claimed for these books is fully borne out by the volumes now before us. We notice that in the Fourth Reading Book Master Willie Francis, of Windsor, takes on immortality, and becomes famous for all time in a reading lesson. When he gets into a Sunday School book his fame will be complete. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glimpses of Three Coasts There are a few spots on the globe where the conditions of the country override these laws, and do away with these lines of discrimination in favors. Florida, Italy, the South of France and of Spain, a few islands, and South California complete the list. These places are doubly dowered. They have the wealths of the two zones, without the drawbacks of either. In South California this results from two causes: first, the presence of a temperate current in the ocean, near the coast; second, the configuration of the mountain ranges which intercept and reflect the sun's rays, and Shut South California off from the rest of the continent. It is, as it were, climatically insulated, - a sort of island on land. It has just enough of sea to make its atmosphere temperate. Its continental position and affinities give it a dryness no island could have; and its climatically insulated position gives it an evenness of temperature much beyond the continental average. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Fisherman's Summer in Canada Therefore, lured by sunny memories of an earlier pilgrimage in which fishing had received less than its due share of attention, I found myself hankering for another glimpse of Canada's rushing rivers and gleaming lakes, which, with a million acres of untrodden forest, make it the finest playground in all the world. How long it will remain so, how long its moose and caribou will tempt the still-hunter over virgin snow, how long its salmon will bend the rods of privileged anglers on the Restigouche and Matapedia, or on some less exclusive waters of the Maritime Provinces, or its trout give sport in a thousand brooks and lakes, or its mighty tuna attract the more adventurous to the bays of Cape Breton and Nova Scotia, it would be futile to forecast. Yet it is as certain as anything in this guesswork future of ours that the sporting attractions of that glorious land will last the lifetime of those now in the cradle, and beyond the span allotted to a generation even a clairvoyant would not wish to see. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Where the Atlantic Meets the Land Bella Sweeny and Terry Gallagher had a holiday, and were spending it upon the rocks at Kilcross. He was a groom and she was a maid at 'the big house, ' some miles inland, and this was her first visit to the place. He had been there several times before, and was doing the honours of the scenery. They had been 'coortin" for some time, and he sat with his arm round her waist, in silence for the most part punctuated by occasional references to the local names for heads of the landscape: he kept severely to facts, with the practical mind of the peasant class from which he sprang. The point at which they found themselves was the innermost end of the long line of black-faced cliffs, where the rocky strata suddenly ceased and gave way to the sandy lowlands. Extensive interviews with people who knew Montgomery – her son, maids, friends, relatives, all now deceased – are only part of the material gathered in a journey to understand Montgomery that took Rubio to Poland and the highlands of Scotland. From Montgomery’s apparently idyllic childhood in Prince Edward Island to her passion-filled adolescence and young adulthood, to her legal fights as world-famous author, to her shattering experiences with motherhood and as wife to a deeply troubled man, this fascinating, intimate narrative of her life will engage and delight.
