Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written in 1876 by William Garden Blaikie, D.D., LL.D. who was a Free Church of Scotland minister. In this book he opens up the Scriptures to display the inner person of Christ. When Christ, the eternal son of God, coequal with the father, became man, he became the perfect embodiment of manhood. If we want to experience the Christian life at its deepest level then we need to study and meditate on the inner life of the person of Christ. It was Professor John Murray in his work, "Redemption Accomplished and Applied" that said "the Scripture regards the work of Christ as one of obedience". It was our Lord's devotion, delight, and harmony with the Father's will that was the motivating and governing principle of everything he did. If we desire to walk as he walked then the same must be true of us. If I could have but one book besides the Bible in my library, this would be it.

Cbapfcr fifth. his life of ministering. "Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many."--Matt. xx. 28. the earthly work of our blessed Lord was a ministry to man as well as a service of God. He not only resigned His own will to the Father, that He might work the work of Him that sent Him, but the particular work on which He was sent was that of ministering, in every form of lowly and self-denying service, to the children of men. "A servant of servants " was truly His office; and the service was a most exacting one, absorbing all the energies of His life, and issuing in an awful death. To become the servant of God was much for one who "thought it not robbery to be equal with God; " but to become the servant of man was a far deeper act of humiliation; and deepest of all was the crowning act of that service--" to give his life a ransom for many." But though such service was humbling in one sense, in another it was both honourable and glorious. And in our Lord's feeling, the glorious aspect quite covered and superseded the humbling. During all His life of condescension, He shows no sense of humiliation. He stoops so low as to wash His disciples' feet without seeming to feel that He is stooping at all. Not only is He upheld by the thought that His work is His Father's business, but also by a sense of its inherent dignity. This appears in His statement of the ruling principle of His life. If the disciples are disputing who shall be greatest, He has a higher aim, the aim of His own life, to set before them. If, like the Gentiles, they are trying who shall have most dominion over others, He has something loftier to substitute for that poor ambition. Let them learn to measure...

Book excerpt: Weaves together biblical exposition and practical application to demonstrate how emotions relate to the Christian life. Emotions are a vital part of what it means to be a human being made in the image of God and redeemed in Jesus Christ. But often our emotions confuse and mislead us. So what is the proper place for emotions in a Christian's walk of faith? In Feelings and Faith Brian Borgman draws from his extensive biblical knowledge and his pastoral experience to help readers understand both divine and human emotions. After laying a biblical foundation he moves on to practical application, focusing on how Christians can put to death ungodly emotional displays and also cultivate godly emotions. This biblically informed, practical volume is helpful for pastors, counselors, and serious-minded Christians who wish to develop a full-orbed faith that encompasses their emotional life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether the issue of the day on Twitter, Facebook, or cable news is our sexuality, political divides, or the perceived conflict between faith and science, today’s media pushes each one of us into a frustrating clash between two opposing sides. Polarizing, us-against-them discussions divide us and distract us from thinking clearly and communicating lovingly with others. Scott Sauls, like many of us, is weary of the bickering and is seeking a way of truth and beauty through the conflicts. Jesus Outside the Lines presents Jesus as this way. Scott shows us how the words and actions of Jesus reveal a response that does not perpetuate the destructive fray. Jesus offers us a way forward—away from harshness, caricatures, and stereotypes. In Jesus Outside the Lines, you will experience a fresh perspective of Jesus, who will not (and should not) fit into the sides.
