Download or read book Innovations in Older Adult Care and Health Service Management: A Focus on the Asia-Pacific Region written by Madhan Balasubramanian and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-02-14 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Population aging is a consistent global demographic trend. The growth in both the size and proportion of older adults has threatened the sustainability of health systems in meeting healthcare needs of the population. Countries in the Asia-Pacific Region may face even more complex health system challenges due to the diversity in culture, management and leadership styles, composition of health service provision, investment in research infrastructure and innovation adaptation, data availability, and gaps in information technology. The Asia-Pacific is home to more than half of the world’s population and comprises countries across five Asia-Pacific subregions: East and North-East Asia, North and Central Asia, Pacific, South East Asia, South, and South West Asia. The economies are diverse, including six high-income countries (such as Australia, Brunei, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Singapore), low-income countries (Nepal and North Korea), and middle-income countries. The region also includes some of the fastest-growing economies in the world, including China, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
Book Synopsis Health and Health Systems in Southeast Asia: Policy Issues and Challenges by : Kai Hong Phua
Download or read book Health and Health Systems in Southeast Asia: Policy Issues and Challenges written by Kai Hong Phua and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past Asian and current global fiscal crisis, coupled with the emergence of new infectious diseases like SARS and prospects of an avian flu pandemic, have thrown the vulnerabilities of healthcare systems into sharp relief. With regional trade further opening up, healthcare markets and the private sector have grown together with the proliferation of healthcare corporate entities. It is timely therefore to take stock of the trends in healthcare around the region, and to identify in a comparative perspective, the common issues and challenges that have arisen with changes in various health systems, and the manner in which national governments have met these challenges. Health and Health Systems in Southeast Asia: Policy Issues and Challenges discusses development trends in health and health systems in Southeast Asia, analyzes the regional issues and experiences related to health sector reforms, and offers lessons to inform wider policy debates of global health challenges and health systems development in other regions. More specifically, the book attempts to address the following questions: What are the global forces affecting health and development in Southeast Asia? How do regional health systems and policies respond to such developments? Are there policy implications and lessons for sustainable health systems reforms? Broad descriptive trends of health issues are compared across ASEAN within the context of very rapid demographic, epidemiological and socio-economic transitions. A selection of national health systems and programs, with interesting case-studies that offer innovative and useful lessons are featured and discussed in more depth.

Book Synopsis Histories of Health in Southeast Asia by : Tim Harper
Download or read book Histories of Health in Southeast Asia written by Tim Harper and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health patterns in Southeast Asia have changed profoundly over the past century. In that period, epidemic and chronic diseases, environmental transformations, and international health institutions have created new connections within the region and the increased interdependence of Southeast Asia with China and India. In this volume leading scholars provide a new approach to the history of health in Southeast Asia. Framed by a series of synoptic pieces on the "Landscapes of Health" in Southeast Asia in 1914, 1950, and 2014 the essays interweave local, national, and regional perspectives. They range from studies of long-term processes such as changing epidemics, mortality and aging, and environmental history to detailed accounts of particular episodes: the global cholera epidemic and the hajj, the influenza epidemic of 1918, WWII, and natural disasters. The writers also examine state policy on healthcare and the influence of organizations, from NGOs such as the China Medical Board and the Rockefeller Foundation to grassroots organizations in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
Book Synopsis Planning and Designing Healthcare Facilities by : Vijai Kumar Singh
Download or read book Planning and Designing Healthcare Facilities written by Vijai Kumar Singh and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The planning and design of healthcare facilities has evolved over the previous decades from "function follows design" to "design follows function." Facilities stressed the functions of healthcare providers but patient experience was not fully considered. The design process has now crucially evolved, and currently, the impression a hospital conveys to its patients and community is the primary concern. The facilities must be welcoming, comfortable, and exude a commitment to patient well-being. Rapid changes and burgeoning technologies are now major considerations in facility design. Without flexibility, hospitals face quicker obsolescence if designs are not forward-thinking. Planning and Designing Healthcare Facilities: A Lean, Innovative, and Evidence-Based Approach explores recent developments in hospital design. Medical facilities have been adapted to the requirements of clinical functions. Recently, the needs of patients and clinical pathways have been recognized. With the patient at the center of the process, the flow of tasks becomes the guiding principle as hospital design must employ evidence-based thinking, and process management methods such as Lean become central. The authors explain new concepts to reduce healthcare delivery cost, but keep quality the primary consideration. Concepts such as sustainability (i.e., Green Hospitals) and the use of new tools and technologies, such as information and communication technology (ICT), Lean, and evidence-based planning and innovations are fully explained.

Book excerpt: The Alma-Ata Conference on Primary Health Care in 1978 mobilized a "primary health care (PHC) movement that undertook to tackle the politically, socially and economically unacceptable health inequalities in all countries." The Declaration of Alma-Ata was clear about the values to be strengthened--social justice, equity and the right to better health for all. Most countries of the South-East Asia Region undertook a variety of initiatives to translate these values into tangible reforms, and many achieved commendable success. One long-term Impact has been that, today, health equity enjoys increased prominence and acceptance In the discourse of political leaders and ministries of health. This book is an attempt to capture some of the PHC-related success stories in the South-East Asia Region, the benchmark for the choice being that all of these efforts earned global recognition by being awarded the prestigious Sasakawa Health Prize of the World Health Organization. Apart from being interesting case studies they hold many valuable lessons for health development today, to "put people at the center of health care."

Book Synopsis Agricultural Innovation in Developing East Asia by : Riikka Rajalahti
Download or read book Agricultural Innovation in Developing East Asia written by Riikka Rajalahti and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2021-12-29 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural innovation has played a critical role in the economic transformation of developing East Asian countries over the past half century. The Green Revolution—in the form of modern seed varieties, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and modern machinery—has contributed to increased crop yields and farm incomes, and decreased poverty across the region. Although policy makers’ traditional focus on expanding and intensifying agricultural production has brought many benefits, the focus on productivity has come at a rising cost. The environmental sustainability of agricultural production is increasingly under threat. Moreover, as countries in the region have become more urbanized and demand for processed foods has risen, inadequate food safety systems and related food safety hazards have created a new form of food insecurity. As detailed in Agricultural Innovation in Developing East Asia: Productivity, Safety, and Sustainability, a new generation of innovation in agriculture has the potential to address the challenges of productivity, sustainability, and food safety to deliver a “triple win.†? To make the most of this promising wave of agricultural innovations, policy makers in the region will need to act to strengthen countries’ agricultural innovation systems. This effort will require a cross-cutting approach, including policy and institutional reforms, improved governance of countries’ agri-food systems, and efforts to build farmers’ and firms’ capacities to adopt new technologies and to innovate.
