The following work, glimpses or AN improved medical philosophy, is not published under an impression that it will meet with much favor from either the literary, philosophical, or medical world: it 18 more likely to meet just a contrary reception. I am well aware that the rules of inductive philosophy are most unmercifully violated; and that received doctrines, sanctioned by the very highest authority, are very strangely disregarded: but the case requires all this. To unlearn is more difficult, in many ih stances. Than to learn; and in proportion as error is supported by high authority, the less willing will be those who have labored zealously to acquire those erroneous notions, to canvass the plalislblllly of con trary Opinions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relation of Medicine to Philosophy That the progress of medical science has enor mously reduced the death-rate no one can possibly deny. The cry occasionally heard, that there is a vast increase in diseases which were never heard of before, is purely absurd; this increase of disease is merely increase in the differentiation of disease. Because at one time the word fever served to cover almost every affection in which the pulse and respiration were quickened and the skin hot, the sum total of disease has not been increased by giving different names to the various fevers. To take a more techni cal instance, the disease of the nervous system called Disseminated Sclerosis will almost undoubtedly be divided up with increasing knowledge into several diseases of the spinal cord, but the sum total of diseases will not be larger. There is, however, just this much truth in the outcry, that as man's life has become more complex with advancing civilisation, so the possibility of minor oscillations from complete adjustment to the environment becomes increasingly great; it is more difficult to be perfectly healthy, because a higher standard of health is required by modern life. This is particularly seen in the case of insanity for civilisation, by increasing the number of social and moral rules to be observed, increases the possibility of their infraction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Physiomedicalism: Its Theorem, Corollary, and Laws of Application for the Cure of Disease Again, the promises of clinical medicine, with its vast accumu lated mass of experimental therapeutic observations, has signally failed to give us even an approach to precision in therapeutic effect because we have simply an aggregation of abstract facts without syllogistic continuity, being devoid of legitimate premise in physio logical truisms. As, also, the resort to chemical philosophy, endeavoring to frame a chemico-therapy, in other words, assuming that the functional activities of the organism are due to chemical disintegration of the tissues, and on this false premise, reasoning that medicines act by chemical equations, giving in some unknow able way a functional result, if given by formulae, analagous to the synthetic results obtained in retorts and test tubes. My object in submitting this effort to the medical profession is because I believe such a work is needed. In what may be found herein all intention of hypercriticism of any special school of medicine is disclaimed. The author believes the time has come for an understanding between the various schools and sects in medicine; for the throwing down of all artificial and illogical barriers between thoughtful, scientific men who are really searching for truth. This does not mean that any school or sect should become subservient to or be absorbed to extinction by another; but it does mean that the medical profession as a whole should be too broad to allow petty theories and intolerance to separate brothers in a common cause. Of course I refer especially to the differences of views existing between the two chief divisions of the medical profession, the elder or "allopathic" school and the younger or "homoeopathic" school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay on the Connection of Mental Philosophy With Medicine The celebrated Dr. Rush, in enumerating the causes that retarded the progress of medicine, adduces as one of the principal, the neglect of cultivating those branches of science which are most intimately connected with medi cine. These are, says he, chiefly natural history and metaphysics. The former term he used in its widest sense, comprising both the animal and vegetable king dom but by the term metaphysics, he intended to include only that field of inquiry which relates to a knowledge of the operations and faculties of the human mind. Though the above remark of Dr. Rush was made nearly a half century since, yet it may apply, if we mistake not, with equal force and propriety to the present state of medical science. While every other branch of knowledge connected with medicine has been rapidly progressing, that styled here metaphysics, has, to a very great extent, been treated with entire neglect by a large majority of this profession. Perhaps it may be safely stated, that in no other department of human improvement has there been a greater advancement for the last fifty years, than in that of medicine. Every year has witnessed some important developement of new truths, as well as a more safe and correct application of those already discovered. Anatomy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophical Problems of Medicine: Presidential Address Before the American Medical Association, at the Thirtieth Annual Session, Atlanta, Ga., May 6, 1879 Science, Literature, Philosophy, and Theology are the great subjects of human study. Science is the knowledge of nature and of nature's laws. Literature, including history, is the representation of man's life; it tells his joys and sorrows, his aspirations and achievements, his victories and defeats, his glory and shame; it is man's autobiography. Philosophy studies man's psychical nature, both in its mental and moral mani foetations; it seeks to discover the relation he bears to the past and to the future, to nature and to the universe, and in its highest development brings the reflecting mind to believe in an ultimate unity, a great first cause, the fountain of all other causes, a power originant of them if not immanent in them. Theology discusses the being, attributes, and providence of the Divine, the uncreated, the eternal, whose existence philosophy in its sublimest aspirations maintains, even if that existence he not one of the fundamental convictions of the human mind. Nevertheless, these divisions are in some degree arbitrary. For example, if there be a Divine Being, all-wise and all powerful, and nature his creation, his name will be recorded on its pages; and to the study of such record, the title of natural theology has been given.
