The following work, glimpses or AN improved medical philosophy, is not published under an impression that it will meet with much favor from either the literary, philosophical, or medical world: it 18 more likely to meet just a contrary reception. I am well aware that the rules of inductive philosophy are most unmercifully violated; and that received doctrines, sanctioned by the very highest authority, are very strangely disregarded: but the case requires all this. To unlearn is more difficult, in many ih stances. Than to learn; and in proportion as error is supported by high authority, the less willing will be those who have labored zealously to acquire those erroneous notions, to canvass the plalislblllly of con trary Opinions. Book excerpt: This is the first book that analyzes and systematizes all the general ideas of medicine, in particular the philosophical ones, which are usually tacit. Instead of focusing on one or two points — typically disease and clinical trial — this book examines all the salient aspects of biomedical research and practice: the nature of disease; the logic of diagnosis; the discovery and design of drugs; the design of lab and clinical trials; the crafting of therapies and design of protocols; the moral duties and rights of physicians and patients; the distinctive features of scientific medicine and of medical quackery; the unique combination of basic and translational research; the place of physicians and nurses in society; the task of medical sociology; and the need for universal medical coverage. Health care workers, medicine buffs, and philosophers will find this thought-provoking book highly useful in their line of work and research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy of Medicine asks two central questions about medicine: what is it, and what should we think of it? Philosophy of medicine itself has evolved in response to developments in the philosophy of science, especially with regard to epistemology, positioning it to make contributions that are medically useful. This book locates these developments within a larger framework, suggesting that much philosophical thinking about medicine contributes to answering one or both of these two guiding questions. Taking stock of philosophy of medicine's present place in the landscape and its potential to illuminate a wide range of areas, from public health to policy, Alex Broadbent introduces various key topics in the philosophy of medicine. The first part of the book argues for a novel view of the nature of medicine, arguing that medicine should be understood as an inquiry into the nature and causes of health and disease. Medicine excels at achieving understanding, but not at translating this understanding into cure, a frustration that has dogged the history of medicine and continues to the present day. The second part of the book explores how we ought to consider medicine. Contemporary responses, such as evidence-based medicine and medical nihilism, tend to respond by fixing high standards of evidence. Broadbent rejects these approaches in favor of Medical Cosmopolitanism, or a rejection of epistemic relativism and pluralism about medicine that encourages conversations between medical traditions. From this standpoint, Broadbent opens the way to embracing alternative medicine. An accessible and user-friendly guide, Philosophy of Medicine puts these different debates into perspective and identifies areas that demand further exploration.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relation of Medicine to Philosophy That the progress of medical science has enor mously reduced the death-rate no one can possibly deny. The cry occasionally heard, that there is a vast increase in diseases which were never heard of before, is purely absurd; this increase of disease is merely increase in the differentiation of disease. Because at one time the word fever served to cover almost every affection in which the pulse and respiration were quickened and the skin hot, the sum total of disease has not been increased by giving different names to the various fevers. To take a more techni cal instance, the disease of the nervous system called Disseminated Sclerosis will almost undoubtedly be divided up with increasing knowledge into several diseases of the spinal cord, but the sum total of diseases will not be larger. There is, however, just this much truth in the outcry, that as man's life has become more complex with advancing civilisation, so the possibility of minor oscillations from complete adjustment to the environment becomes increasingly great; it is more difficult to be perfectly healthy, because a higher standard of health is required by modern life. This is particularly seen in the case of insanity for civilisation, by increasing the number of social and moral rules to be observed, increases the possibility of their infraction. Book excerpt: Papers presented at a symposium on philosophy and medicine at the Institute for the Medical Humanities at the University of Texas Medical Branch in 1974 were published in the inaugural volume of this series. To help celebrate more than 20 years of extraordinary success with the series, another symposium was convened in Galveston in 1995. The convenors asked the participants these questions: In what ways and to what ends have academic humanists and medical scientists and practitioners become serious conversation partners in recent years? How have their dialogues been shaped by prevailing social views, political philosophies, academic habits, professional mores, and public pressures? What have been the key concepts and questions of these dialogues? Have the dialogues made any appreciable intellectual or social difference? Have they improved the care of the sick? Authors respond from a variety of theoretical perspectives in the humanities. They also articulate conceptions of philosophy of medicine and bioethics from various practice experiences, and bring critical attention to aspects of the contemporary health policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Moon is physician to the National hospital for diseases of the heart in London, and the first three chapters of the book were originally published in theBritish Medical Journal. Its object is “to show by taking various important epochs in the history of the world, how intimately medicine has been bound up with the current thought and philosophy of the day; how medicine no more than art can work away by itself uninfluenced by the intellectual milieu in which it finds itself" (p. vii). Both in his Preface and at the end of the book, the author, however, refers to a more practical object, which he believes that a study of the interrelations between philosophy and medicine should help to bring about. This is to afford to the physician a broader and truer conception of the purpose of his art, as not merely contributing to the preservation of life, but as furthering the intellectual and moral conditions that make life saner and more satisfying. “The function of the poet, Goethe tells us somewhere, is so to represent things that we may find life tolerable; and the physician, in providing for the health of the body as a sort of indispensable prerequisite, must ever have before his mind that wider outlook which shall enable him to cope with the tædium vitæ, Weltschmerz, maladie de l'infini, or by whatever name we like to call those ills which seem inseparable from the travail of an advanced civilization struggling to a new birth" (p. xi). The book covers practically the whole field of the history of medicine and is consequently sometimes scrappy and disconnected. Its main service is in bringing together from the standard histories of medicine. and thus making more generally accessible to English readers, the main facts regarding the development of medical theory and practice in their relation to the science and philosophy of the different historical periods. The author does not profess to base his work on original research, but he writes pleasantly and clearly; and although he emphasizes the advantages that have come to medicine through turning away from general theories and occupying itself with detailed researches, he yet looks forward to a return to philosophy, a renewal of the sense of the unity of all the rational pursuits of life. —The Philosophical Review, Volume 19 [1910]
