Book Synopsis Listening as Spiritual Practice in Early Modern Italy by : Andrew Dell'Antonio
Download or read book Listening as Spiritual Practice in Early Modern Italy written by Andrew Dell'Antonio and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2011-07-21 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early seventeenth century, when the first operas were written and technical advances with far-reaching consequences—such as tonal music—began to develop, is also notable for another shift: the displacement of aristocratic music-makers by a new professional class of performers. In this book, Andrew Dell’Antonio looks at a related phenomenon: the rise of a cultivated audience whose skill involved listening rather than playing or singing. Drawing from contemporaneous discourses and other commentaries on music, the visual arts, and Church doctrine, Dell’Antonio links the new ideas about cultivated listening with other intellectual trends of the period: humanistic learning, contemplative listening (or watching) as an active spiritual practice, and musical mysticism as an ideal promoted by the Church as part of the Catholic Reformation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book On Allegory written by Mary Carr and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays focuses on the ubiquity of the allegorical imagination in pre-modern western culture, and participates in a recent wave of resurgence of interest in the complex practices and ideas usually defined by the word "allegory". The contributors study the impact of the allegorical imagination on the production, reception and interpretation of literature, as well as its function as a tool of philosophical and theological enquiry, and its role in shaping the visual arts. Essays focus on subjects as varied as the general theories on allegory, allegory's relation to the human imagination, its usefulness or even inevitability as a human mode of cognition and its potential for the encoding of meanings that may be political, historical, religious and amorous. They discuss canonical figures such as Petrarch, Boccaccio, Boethius, Hans Memling, Pico della Mirandola, King James I and John Donne, but extend to include neglected but equally important figures such as Stephen Hawes or Thomas Usk as well as thematic approaches less concerned with issues of authority and authorship. As such the collection is a testimony to the variety, complexity, and adaptability of "allegory" at the heart of medieval western civilisation.
Download or read book ANGELS written by Liliana Fantini and published by OAK Edizioni. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angels accompany our life and are part of it. They are Beings of Light that are near us and help us to find ourselves; who we really are, our light, our source and they help us understand our purpose on this earth. They speak to us through our wise inner voice. They show themselves to us through visible or more hidden signs. Believing in Angels is also to know that, if we ask them, they can help us, because by divine law they cannot intervene without our permission or explicit request. This book was born of an intuition, from a sign received, and I hope that it can help other people to find their own way and be an inspiration for any who wish to change themselves and their lives
