Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glands in Health and Disease Monkey glands; clever men and stupid ones; glands as the cause of crime; the origin of races; the mentally unbalanced; many acute diseases; "the bearded lady, the giant, the fat boy and the midget"; - all these and more have been dealt with under the subject of glands of internal secretion (also called ductless or endocrine glands). As in any subject that fires the popular imagination, fact and fancy have been mixed, - several drops of fact have been largely diluted with many drops of fancy. The achievements, judged by rigid scientific standards, are no more than modest, but the possibilities are limitless. It is because of these vast possibilities that an imagination, not sufficiently tempered by self-criticism, is apt to enlarge a molehill into a mountain. The glands discussed in this book, the ductless or endocrine glands, regulate the activities of the organism little less than does the brain itself. Book excerpt: Salivary glands are of utmost importance for several physiological functions ranging from the protection of teeth and surrounding soft tissues to the lubrication of the oral cavity, which is crucial for speech and perception of food taste. This publication highlights specific aspects of salivary gland development, investigating the mechanisms involved in embryonic development, the current research in stem cells, the ability of adult glands to regenerate and the signalling pathways involved in this process. Key stages of salivary gland development, moving from initiation to differentiation of the glands, are discussed, as well as unusual adaptations, ranging from making silk to making venom. The book finally provides new data on surgical techniques and diagnostic tools for clinicians involved in salivary gland disorders. Researchers and students with an interest in craniofacial sciences as well as clinicians dealing with salivary gland disorders will find this publication an excellent source of up-to-date information.

Book excerpt: Cellular Endocrinology in Health and Disease, Second Edition, describes the underlying basis of endocrine function, providing an important tool to understand the fundamentals of endocrine diseases. Delivering a comprehensive review of the basic science of endocrinology, from cell biology to human disease, this work explores and dissects the function of a number of cellular systems. The new edition provides an understanding of how endocrine glands function by integrating information resulting in biological effects on both local and systemic levels, also providing new information on the molecular physiopathogenesis of endocrine neoplasic cells. The new edition expands the most used chapters from the first edition and proposes a series of substitutions and additions to the table of contents. New chapters cover signaling, brown adipose tissue, hypothalamic cell models, cellular basis of insulin resistance, genetics and epigenetics of neuroendocrine tumors, and a series of chapters on endocrine-related cancer. Providing content that crosses disciplines, Cellular Endocrinology in Health and Disease, Second Edition, details how cellular endocrine function contributes to system physiology and mediates endocrine disorders. A methods section proves novel and useful approaches across research focus that will be attractive to medical students, residents, and specialists in the field of endocrinology, as well as to those interested in cellular regulation. Editors Alfredo Ulloa-Aguirre and Ya-Xiong Tao, experts in molecular and cellular aspects of endocrinology, deliver contributions carefully selected for relevance, impact, and clarity of expression from leading field experts Explores endocrine cells biology in normal and pathologic conditions Covers new aspects of endocrine cell function in distinct tissues Provides a view into the biological effect in local and systemic levels 15 new chapters covering the recent developments in the field

The disorders themselves cover a broad array of diseases, both benign and malignant. Thus, the contents of this book have been organized to reflect the diverse nature of salivary gland anatomy, physiology, and dysfunction in various states of disease. In this way, the evolution of the field and its diagnostic and therapeutic management are better demonstrated. Covering everything from practical diagnosis to gland tumor therapy, this really is a crucial work for any surgeon working in the facial or neck regions.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Thyroid Gland in Health and Disease A period of sick leave from active service has afforded me an Opportunity to incorporate into one volume the results of some fourteen years of study of the thyroid apparatus and its diseases. When, in 1902, I undertook the investigation of the aetiology of its maladies a maze of hypotheses and uncertainties surrounded the subject. Knowing nothing, premising nothing, I determined to examine it from the combined epidemiological, clinical, experi mental and pathological points of view. Some years of extensive epidemiological research cleared the ground of many false hypo theses, resolved some uncertainties, and brought to light certain facts which suggested an infectious or toxic origin for some of the thyroid's most common disorders. Clinical experience during the same period added further facts which strengthened this supposition; observations on man and experimental work on a large scale on animals converted the supposition into what I believe to be fact, and pathological studies have since confirmed my belief. Meanwhile it became necessary to revert to the study of the normal thyroid gland in order fully to understand the various processes of abnormality. As a result of this study a number of important points relating to the gland's normal range of physio logical action were elucidated, whereby it became possible to interpret the pathological changes to which various experimental procedures had given rise.
