Thus the most recent and authoritative work upon the subject has treated the glaciers of Greenland and Switzerland together. The aim of the present work has been rather to emphasize the wide differences in other than dimensional respects which separate such bodies, and to show that the law's which govern their nourishment and depletion, and their reaction with the lithosphere as well, are by no means identical. The broad line of cleavage is found to he between those glaciers which completely cover a considerable portion of the rock surface, and have the form of a flat dome or shield, and the remaining types. These latter glaciers being all restricted to maintain districts have been designated mountain glaciers, and they have been found to bear very simple relations to each other, dependent upon the measure of their nourishment and waste. Alimentation being in turn dependent upon climatic conditions, all are brought in order within the cycle of changes which correspond to a period of increasingly rigorous climate followed in turn by more genial conditions - the cycle of glaciation. Throughout the attempt has been to emphasize the broader physiographic elements of the problem and to show the relations to alimentation and depletion. In this manner snow bank of broad extent are formed, the lower portions of which become compacted into ice. The change from snow to ice is known to result from pressure, and as ice is mobile under pressure, either by reason of its inherent plasticity or as a result of regelation, the weight of this mass tends to change its form, and it thus acquires motion, which takes the direction of least resistance. The essential characteristic of glaciers seems to be that they result from the consolidation of snow in regions of secular accumulation, i. Above the snow-line, and ow to regions of dissipation, i. Below the snow-line. From these primary conditions result a multitude of second ary phenomena. For convenience of reference we will divide glaciers into alpine and continental; not that the two classes are alway distinct and separable, but for the reason that typical examples of each are well characterized and capable of specific description. Warren, Pa where, in an area which was affected by only the earliest glaciation, glacial deposits are found filling the rock channels of old tributaries to the Alleghany to a depth of from one hundred and seventy to two hundred and fifty feet, and carrying the preglacial erosion at that point very closely, if not quite, down to the present rock bottoms of all the streams. This removes from Professor Chamberlin a most important part of the evidence of a long interglacial period to which he had appealed; he having maintained* that the higher glacial gravels antedated those of the moraine-forming epoch by the measure of the erosion of the channel through the old drift and the rock, whose mean depth here is about three hundred feet, of which perhaps two hundred and fifty feet may be said to be be rock, adding that the exca vation that intervened between the two epochs in other portions of the Alleghany, Monongahela, and upper Ohio valleys is closely comparable with this. These observations of Mr. Leverett and myself seem to demonstrate the position maintained in the volume (page namely, that the inner precipitous rock gorges of the upper Ohio and its tributaries are mainly preglacial, rather than interglacial. The only way in which Professor Chamberlin can in any degree break the force of this discovery is by assuming that in preglacial times the present narrow rock gorges of the Alleghany and the Ohio were not continuous, but that (as indicated in the present volume on page 206) the drainage of various portions of that region was by northern outlets to the Lake Erie basin, leaving, on this supposition, the cm between two or three drainage areas to be lowered in gla cial or interglacial time.
