Book excerpt: The Essential Guide for Beating Temptation Falling for temptation isn’t inevitable. We don’t have to lose the fight. In fact, we can win if we understand the root of the problem and what Christians have done from the beginning to beat it. Our Favorite Sins shines a much-needed light in our lives’ dark corners and reveals the time-tested methods for getting victory over sin. Are you tyrannized by your own desires? If you are breathing, your answer is probably yes. The question is: What are you going to do about it? With more than thirty years of pastoral experience, Todd D. Hunter knows that most people—himself included—struggle every day with temptation. All too often, we fail and fall, and some of us are at our wit’s end, utterly defeated. What do we do to get a grip on the sin in our life and live like God wants? There’s good news: despite all our failures and shameful “moments after,” there really is a way out, a way forward, and a way that draws us closer to the life that God desires for us. In Our Favorite Sins, Hunter cracks open the problem of temptation and points to practical, biblically based, time-tested solutions. First revealing the role played by our disordered desires, Hunter shows how different temptations trip us up and how we can resist and overcome them, even if we’ve fallen prey to them for decades. Victory starts with reordering our desires, and the church has given us the tools for the job. Hunter shows us how to use them and start beating the temptations that so often beat us. Informed by exclusive research from the Barna Group, Our Favorite Sins offers a view that works for any believer wherever they are and no matter how big the battle they’re fighting.

Book excerpt: Much of my experience in ministry has come as result of a great deal of perseverance and after many trials and test at the hand of God. Perhaps the most valuable lesson I have learned is that "the trying of our faith worketh patience," and that a great deal of the hurt that believers experience in ministry is for the testing of their faithfulness. This book will focus on the birthing of the church and if after having read it you conclude that the church is a place where you can draw closer to God, strengthen your personal relationship with Him, add to your character, and increase your integrity this book will have served one of its purpose. The Church builds strong communities, families, cities, and ultimately strong nation. The Church enhances visionary purpose and spiritual development. The Church has been the most prevalent institution in the lives of Black and Brown communities since the ending of the institution a slavery. It has given rise to political, economic, social, and educational advancements; it gave rise to preachers as the voice of the community. My involvement in the church gave me the impetuous to go to college, become a writer and motivation speaker. It increased my desire to become a caring and compassionate person and like the pastor of this church who will be there for you and your visionary purpose; you can stand on its promises.

Book excerpt: The general practices related to church funding aren’t producing the same results they have in the past. There is a general acceptance that something has changed but little talk or interest is coming from traditional church leader training sources such as denominational entities and seminaries. Pastors are largely left to their own devices to “figure this out.” They need a lifeline. While some churches are experiencing exponential growth, some churches - despite their best efforts - have been unsuccessful at moving beyond survival mode. Coupled with increased competition from other nonprofits and a decline in the commitment to give to the church first, churches risk losing the funding they need. A growing number of leaders are beginning to discover there is another way and are struggling to understand what makes one church generous and another not. There is a need in the market to offer a simple, working definition of “generosity” and reveal the “secrets” some church leaders seem to have simply stumbled upon which are resulting in unexplainable ministry growth and unprecedented church funding even in the midst of tough economic times. The content of this material was developed and refined by Jim Sheppard and Chris Willard through years of ministry leadership in the local church, consulting with church leaders across a broad spectrum of church settings, and through participation in and leadership of the Generous Church Leadership Community facilitated by Leadership Network. Of particular benefit will be the collection of observations and best practices gleaned during the Generous Church Leadership Community that originated within real-life church leadership situations and scenarios by highlighting specific challenges, methods, and successes.

They also yearn for rhythms and routines that build spiritual health. Still others are responding to a call to participate in worship rather than merely sitting back and looking at a stage. Liturgy offers all of this and more.

Book excerpt: Many churches have done a good job of letting certain people know they don't belong. Sometimes it's what they think or believe, or what they aren't sure they believe. Other times it's nothing more than who they are. This book is for people who have felt unwelcome in church but can't shake the need for spiritual nourishment, for people who seek to worship without having to check their minds at the door. You may still not feel welcome in every church, but a great many churches really do welcome you and are prepared to support you and strengthen you on your journey. Maybe it's time to reclaim your spiritual heritage and take up the welcome that many churches have to offer.

Book excerpt: Does your life ever feel like one series of rushed moments after another? Do you want to feel more present and connected to those you love? Do you want to be able to listen without thinking the whole time of what you’re going to say next? Do you want to feel less distracted, less busy, and more whole? Most of us spend our distracted lives longing to get to the next, better moment and fail to notice the present one. We lack space between one task and the next, one thought and the next, one email and the next. Social media, TV, work deadlines, and family stress steal our enjoyment and engagement in the moment. Holy Noticing will teach you how to: become more aware of your thoughts, emotions, and environment recognize Christ’s presence in the moment reduce your stress by developing the ability to focus on God and people rather than tasks Many today think mindfulness is dangerous, unchristian, or associated with Eastern religions—and often it is! But Dr. Charles Stone reveals that the art of holy noticing—purposefully paying attention to God as he works in us, our relationships, and our world—is a spiritual discipline Christians have practiced for millennia. Holy Noticing explores the historically Christian and biblical roots of this lifestyle, as well as Dr. Stone’s BREATHe model, which teaches you to be more engaged with Christ in the everyday moments that too often slip right by us. Discover the lost spiritual discipline of holy noticing today and learn to engage the world like Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My mother made sure that all of us were in church on Sunday and that we went to all the Revivals and to vacation Bible schools every summer, and after I was married, I continued that practice with my family. In the '50s–'60s and part of the '70s, all churches were always full with people, sometimes having to stand up in the back. But then near the end of the '70s, I noticed a decline in church attendance and fewer people were being baptized, and this has continued to be a trend today. I noticed this, and I'm sure others have also, and yet nothing was done. I decided to start writing down my ideas about this several years ago, and I kept them in a notebook. After I retired, I had more time, so I decided to put together a plan to not only stop this but also to turn it around; and long before I wrote this book, I put this plan into action. The first church had between fifty and sixty people when this started, and in just about three years, this church had grown to almost three hundred members. So I tried it again with another church in another state, and basically the same thing happened. So being retired, I decided to put this plan together in a book that has taken me almost ten years to implement and write. It does work; however, you just can't wish it to happen. It takes work and work from everyone, but if we are to follow Christ's commandments, it should be a work that is enjoyable and a blessing both for you and to the souls you win, and the blessings will continue as you watch your church grow. May God bless you in your endeavor. Don't give up.
