Book excerpt: “Gita” has always intrigued me to the core, probably because of its powerful presence in our religious upbringings or perhaps simply because of its different narratives & commentaries from various commentators from different walks of life over the several centuries gone by. So, until now we understand Gita from the stand points of its writer (“To Each to its Own”) & reason for that is the usage of words (in any translation/commentary). The use of heavy vocabulary, demotivates the regular reader. It’s not that it is wrong, rather in my view it’s because of the fact that Gita has such heavy-duty Sanskrit words, which conveys more then just the meaning of the word itself, so it is difficult for any translator to convey the same message in easier words. And I have to admit that it is extremely difficult to translate & convey the meaning of these powerful Sanskrit words in easy English. Still, I have tried in my own humble way to narrate “Gita” as it is or the way Shri Hari has inspired me to write using day-to-day words, so that every reader can interpret in their own simple way (“My Gita, My Understanding”)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All events of life, all experiences, all teachings, all paths appear in Awareness and are in fact nothing but Awareness.Awareness is the seeker, Awareness is the seeking and finally Awareness is That, which is discovered by Awareness. This is Self-realization. No methods, no philosophies, no practices, just a direct pointing to what is never absent. This is the stunning purity of Astavakra Gita, an ancient yet little known scripture of Advaita Vedanta.Astavakra Gita can be considered a truly universal text, for it does not date itself to any period of time, nor does it attach itself to any religion, culture, or ethnic group. This new commentary and translation of the Astavakra Gita by Mansoor brings out the simplicity and majesty of these verses of pure Non-duality, making them accessible to everyone on the spiritual path.

Book excerpt: The traditional number of verses of the Gita is defined by the teacher Sankara (788-820 CE) as being 700. However, a number of 745 verses results from the Gitamana, an inserted stanza that gives the number of verses spoken by each speaker in the Gita. The Gitamana is found mostly in Kashmirian versions of the Mahabharata, inserted directly after the Bhagavadgita, and is not found in Bengali and southern recensions. The Gitamana is placed just before the 51 verses of the Gitasara, which is the summary of the Gita. Adding the Gitasara to the Bhagavadgita extends the Bhagavadgita, and can be made to comply with the specifications given in the Gitamana. Perhaps this is the first translation into English of the Gitasara, reveals thoughts not found in the Gita and worth meditating on, even the passages that are difficult.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deserts appear very fascinating during our short visits. However, the lives of plants and animals are very dif?cult under the harsh climatic conditions of high tempe- ture and scant water supply in deserts, sometimes associated with high concent- tions of salt. The editor of this book was born and brought up in the Great Indian Desert, and has spent much of his life studying the growth and metabolism of desert plants. It is very charming on a cool summer evening to sit at the top of a sand dune listening only to blowing air and nothing else. It has been my dream to prepare a volume on desert plants encompassing various aspects of desert plant biology. In this book, I have tried to present functional and useful aspects of the vegetation resources of deserts along with scienti?c input aimed at understanding and impr- ing the utility of these plants. The scant vegetation of deserts supports animal life and provides many useful medicines, timber and fuel wood for humans. Therefore, there are chapters devoted to medicinal plants (Chap. 1), halophytes (Chaps. 13, 14), and fruit plants (Chaps. 17, 20). Desert plants have a unique reproductive biology (Chaps. 9–11), well-adapted eco-physiological and anatomical charact- istics (Chap. 7), and specialised metabolism and survival abilities. These plants are dif?cult to propagate and pose many problems to researchers developing biote- nological approaches for their amelioration (Chaps. 18–20).

Book excerpt: This book contains the original Sanskrit text of the Bhagavad Gita, a translation partly by Sri Aurobindo, and commentary drawn entirely from Essays on the Gita, Sri Aurobindo s principal work on this important scripture. The editor, Anilbaran Roy, was an early disciple of Sri Aurobindo, and prepared the commentary with the permission of Sri Aurobindo. While introducing the first edition of the book in 1938 the editor wrote, The Gita is a great synthesis of Aryan spiritual culture and Sri Aurobindo s luminous exposition of it&sets out its inner significances in a way that brings them home to the modern mind. This new edition has been brought out after a long time.
