How the branches sway when even the gentlest breeze blows! And when the wind is high, the limbs bend and bow, but never break. While through all kinds, of weather, stands stiff and straight and unbending the stout, thick trunk of the tree! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Red Cross Girl "And they rise to their feet as he passes, gentlemen unafraid." He was almost too good to be true. In addition, the gods loved him, and so he had to die young. Some people think that a man of fifty-two is middle-aged. But if R. H. D. had lived to be a hundred, he would never have grown old. It is not generally known that the name of his other brother was Peter Pan. Within the year we have played at pirates together, at the taking of sperm whales; and we have ransacked the Westchester Hills for gunsites against the Mexican invasion. And we have made lists of guns, and medicines, and tinned things, in case we should ever happen to go elephant shooting in Africa. But we weren't going to hurt the elephants. Once R. H. D. shot a hippopotamus and he was always ashamed and sorry. I think he never killed anything else. He wasn't that kind of a sportsman. Of hunting, as of many other things, he has said the last word. Do you remember the Happy Hunting Ground in "The Bar Sinister?" - "Where nobody hunts us, and there is nothing to hunt." It was a little blue-eyed girl of ten who sat on a low hassock at my feet, slowly drawing the soft auburn curls between her fingers, when, suddenly lifting her head and looking me earnestly in the face, she exclaimed: "What is the Red Cross? Please tell me about it; I can not understand it." There was a pleading earnestness in the tone not to be resisted, and laying down my pen I commenced to explain to her the principles, history, and uses of the Red Cross. She listened anxiously, the pretty brow knitted; she seemed more and more perplexed, until, as if a light had broken over her, she exclaimed, half impatiently: "Not that-not that, tell me something it does-it and you, I can understand it better then."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Girls of Central High Aiding the Red Cross: Or Amateur Theatricals For; A Worthy Cause It was Saturday evening, and it was always Laura's duty to straighten out her father's books for him on that day, for although she was a high school girl, she was usually so well prepared in her studies that she could give the books proper attention weekly. Laura had taken a course in bookkeeping and she was quite familiar with the business Of keeping a Simple set of books like these. She never let the day ledger and the trash get far apart. It was her custom to strike a balance weekly, and this she was doing at this time. Or she was trying to! But there seemed to be some thing entirely wrong with the cash itself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aunt Jane's Nieces in the Red Cross This is the story of how three brave American girls sacrificed the comforts and luxuries of home to go abroad and nurse the wounded soldiers of a foreign war. I wish I might have depicted more gently the scenes in hospital and on battlefield, but it is well that my girl readers should realize something of the horrors of war, that they may unite with heart and soul in earnest appeal for universal, lasting Peace and the future abolition of all deadly strife. Book excerpt: The Red Cross Girls with the Russian Army: Large Print By Margaret Vandercook IN the last volume of the Red Cross series the four American girls spent six months in tragic little Belgium. There, in an American hospital in Brussels, devoted to the care, not of wounded soldiers, but of ill Belgians, three of the girls lived and worked. But Eugenia went alone to dwell in a house in the woods because the cry of the children in Belgium made the strongest appeal to her. The house was a lonely one, supposed to be haunted, yet in spite of this Eugenia moved in. There the money of the girl whom her friend had once believed "poor as a church mouse" fed and cared for her quickly acquired family. In Eugenia's haunted house were other sojourners furnishing the mystery of this story and endangering her liberty, almost her life. They were a Belgian officer and his family whom the Red Cross girl kept in hiding. Somehow the officer had managed to return to his own country from the fighting line in Belgium. After securing the papers he desired from the enemy, by Eugenia's aid, he was enabled to return once more to King Albert and the Allied armies. Thus Eugenia was left alone to bear the brunt of the German displeasure after the discovery of her misdeeds. She was imprisoned in Brussels, and became dangerously ill. Finally, because she was an American, Eugenia was made to leave the country, rather than to suffer the punishment which would have been hers had she belonged to another nationality. But the four American Red Cross girls also had the companionship of Dick Thornton during their stay in the once lovely capital of Belgium. Dick had not recovered the use of his arm, but in spite of this had come to Brussels to help with the work of the American Relief society. The novel exemplifies the genre of war literature, offering a humanizing perspective on the impacts of conflict on individuals and communities. Helen Hart, a prolific author with a background in journalism, likely drew inspiration for 'Mary Lee the Red Cross Girl' from her own experiences or research during the time of World War I. Her ability to blend factual accuracy with engaging storytelling lends authenticity to the narrative and underscores the importance of the Red Cross's humanitarian work during the war.
