Many people are too embarrassed to seek help, tell themselves they are over-reacting, or don't know that depression is considered a serious medical disorder of the brain. In fact, depression is also directly connected to bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Per the National Institute of Mental Health: * Because of depression, workers miss a combined total of 490 million work days per year which causes a combined annual economic loss for businesses of over $100 billion. * Bipolar Disorder affects 6.3 million people in the United States alone. * Depression is the leading cause of suicide - with one person dying by suicide every 13 minutes. * Postpartum Depression affects 15% of new mothers within a month of delivering their baby. * Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) affects 8 million adults each year. * Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death with an average of 3,600 people attempting each day.

Book excerpt: Per Mental Health America, 1,872,000,000 (48%) of the world's population feels hopeless. Science proves HOPE lowers the risk of early death and gives people a sense of purpose. Feeling HOPE helps release regret, sadness, anger, and depression. HOPE is not easy to feel, yet feeling HOPE creates possibilities to believe good things will happen so that they really can. Hopelessness is a symptom of many behavioral and mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, bipolar, eating disorders, PTSD, substance abuse, and suicidal ideations. However, hopelessness does not have to co-occur with any particular condition. Not only do feelings of hopelessness compromise an individual's sense of well-being and stability, it typically robs them of the motivation required to reach out for help or to utilize available resources. In fact, many of the common statements said by those feeling hopeless include: my situation will never get better, I have no future, no one can help me, I feel like giving up, it's too late, I have no hope, my situation is helpless, I feel doom, and I will never be happy again.

Book excerpt: Over 40 million Americans, mostly women, struggle with codependency. In fact, 14.4 million of them were also diagnosed with depression. The lower their self-worth, the more they alienated themselves, the less self-awareness they had, and the more severe their depression was. As a natural continuance, the more severe their depression, the less independent they were, and therefore, the more codependent and debilitating their symptoms were. As you can see, it's truly a vicious circle. Codependent relationships can be between friends, romantic partners, or family members and often the relationship includes emotional, verbal, or physical abuse. Friends and family members of a codependent person do NOT want them to get well because... Take the SELF-INVENTORY inside and see if codependency is ruining your life. The bad news is that symptoms increase when ignored. The good news is that with proper support, you can regain control of your life and become your authentic and independent self.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It may surprise you to know that 70% of human behavior is based on emotions, not logic. In fact, it is very easy to get increasingly irritated at people, places, and things. As an example, does any of this scenario sound familiar? It’s Monday morning and you are ready to face the day. Everything at home is calm – pets are happy, coffee is ready, your hair and make-up turned out great, and you look and feed good. You get in the car and slowly and methodically enter the parking lot otherwise known as morning rush hour. You finally get some open space and, as you move into the fast lane, a very slow driver creeps out in front of you. As you hit the brakes with required force, you take a deep breath, think a few unkind things, but try to let it go. At lunch time, the retired guy in front of you is bitchin’ about the one-too-many pickles he got on his burger, and now you are running late. You decide to eat on the way back to the office, only to find your order is completely wrong. How dare that inconsiderate old man ruin your lunch over a damn pickle – I bet he couldn’t really taste the difference anyway! With no time to go back to the restaurant, you turn on the radio to invite a pleasant distraction only to hear about a highway shooter, racial rant, or political attack. As you continue on, all you can think about is how your whole day has been ruined by idiots. Unfortunately, a version of this story is all too common for many, which makes it that much easier to feel the anger around us – from our own children and spouse, to our parents, siblings, co-workers, and even complete strangers. Animal lovers are angry because people eat meat, vegans are angry because of Monsanto, dancers are angry because a non-dancer was chosen for their event poster, environmentalists are angry because of developers, young mothers are angry over immunizations, and the list goes on. Yet, anger - which is characterized by a feeling of antagonism toward someone or something that you feel has deliberately done you wrong - is not always bad. In fact, angry feelings often provide the motivation needed to solve social issues such as gender inequality, the environment, minimum or stagnant wages, taxes, and student loans. This was the case with many historical figures such as Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, and Mahatma Gandhi. Science has shown us that nothing exists without it’s opposite. Unfortunately, science has also shown us some disturbing facts. Recently, through extensive research on the topic of anger, The Mental Health Organization, Gallup Polls, Duke University, National Mental Health Institute, and others have openly shared these statistics: 64% of the population view the world as an increasingly-angry place. 32% of the population has a close friend or family member with out-of-control anger. 12% of the population admits to having trouble controlling their own anger. 28% of the population admits they are worried about their current level of anger. 20% of couples have ended in divorce because of the behavior of the angry partner during the outburst. Only 13% of those with out-of-control anger have actually sought help for it. 58% of angry people don’t know where to seek help in their communities. 84% of the population agrees that angry people should seek help for their anger. 62% of those who did seek help with anger, did so from counselors, therapists, and medical professionals - not friends or family members. 10% of adults have a long history of explosive anger and have access to a firearm. This significantly increases the risk when anger develops. 8% of adolescents up to age 12 are diagnosed with a mental illness known as “intermittent explosive disorder” which is three times more common in boys than girls. This is usually inherited from a mother who has a history of high anxiety. Without treatment, this continues into adulthood. Of these diagnosed adolescents, 6.5% were treated for their anger while the others were treated for depression or substance abuse. 80% of drivers admitted to road rage. Of these: 51% tailgated, 45% honked, 33% used angry gestures, 47% yelled, 24% blocked the lanes, 12% cut another driver off, 4% physically got out of the car to approach the other driver, and 3% rammed into the other driver's vehicle. Many used several of these in the same occurrence. Additionally, the majority of the 80% are from states with four distinct seasons. Most aggressive acts are committed by males between 19 – 39 years old. Males are three times more likely than females to act on anger. One-third of all deaths by firearm are homicides. Regardless of age, gender or geographical location, anger is cumulative. You may be able to control your anger 10 times but, on the 11th time when something seemingly small occurs, you erupt out of control. While it is nice to know that research has verified these facts that help us increase our own personal and community awareness, science also proves we mellow as we age. In other words, as our anxiety calms down, so does our anger which allows us to become more conscientious, agreeable, accepting, responsible, compassionate, and emotionally stable. All of this information is interesting BUT do you really want to walk around another 20, 30 or 40 years feeling this way? Likely not. That is why this book exists… to help you stop sabotaging jobs, relationships, and happiness. It takes a strong desire and willingness to do the work that can change your angry attitude and the benefits are worth it. Unfortunately, anger can become habitual in one's brain and that's why it is hard work. The goal with this book is to share personal stories, tips, and tools to help you successfully make it to your elder years. Once there, biology will take over and do the work for you. FIND OUT IF YOU COULD BENEFIT FROM RECEIVING HELP FOR YOUR ANGER: (1) Do you get angry over small things, or even for no obvious reason at all? (2) Do you have a difficult time not thinking about whatever or whoever made you angry? (3) When you feel angry, do you wish to break something or beat someone up? (4) Do you easily get irritated when people do not understand you? (5) Do you embarrass family, friends, or coworkers with angry outbursts? (6) Do you get irritated when people in front of you drive the exact speed limit? (7) Do you easily get irritated when people do things they shouldn't like go barefoot in the store, smoke in a non-smoking area, or have more than 10 items in the express checkout lane? (8) Do you yell or curse when irritated but not do so when you are in a good mood? (9) Do you get easily frustrated when machines/equipment or technology breaks or does not work as expected? (10) Do you get irritated when people take advantage of you or when people are "idiots" (incompetent)? The more "yes" answers you have, the more you are struggling with anger issues. Inside of this book are the stories of 18 women who, just like you, have felt consumed by anger. Contrary to popular belief, anger is neither good nor bad; it is your reaction that matters most. Did you know that suppressing your anger can also be destructive to your health? Yet as we already viewed, expressing anger constructively can be a powerful catalyst for change. The personal insights, tips, and tools in this book can help you put the brakes on your anger just when you need it most.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Per Mental Health America, over 40 million Americans, mostly women, have actually been diagnosed or labeled as "codependent". In fact, a study using the Beck Depression Inventory and the Codependency Assessment Tool, revealed that 14.4 million (36%) of these Americans were also undergoing simultaneous treatment for depression. The study found that the more they answered "yes" to questions like those below, the more impaired they were by their codependency, and the more severe their depression. The next factors measured in this study were that of self-worth and authenticity. It was found that the lower their self-worth, the more they alienated themselves, the less self-awareness they had, and the more severe their depression was. As a natural continuance, the more severe the depression, the less independent they were, and therefore, the more codependent and debilitating their symptoms were. As you can see, it's truly a vicious circle. Codependent relationships can be between friends, romantic partners, or family members and often, the relationship includes emotional, verbal, or physical abuse. Friends and family members of a codependent person often recognize that something is wrong but will often not try to help because they would lose their "benefits" should the codependent person become healthy. Like any mental or emotional health issue, treatment requires time and effort, and a strong (but non-enabling and non-codependent) support system, including this book. The bad news is that the severity of codependency increases when the symptoms go ignored. The good news is that with the right help you can regain control of your life, set and maintain health boundaries, seek-out your authentic and independent self, reach goals, practice your passions, reclaim your career, and much more. That is why this book exists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finally take control of your anxiety without medication so your anxiety stops controlling you! Per the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), anxiety affects over 2 billion adults worldwide and over 97 million in the United States alone, of which an estimated 54% of these are women. The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry stated that anxiety treatment costs are over $42 billion per year in the United States. Of this, $23 billion is for repetitive healthcare services due to symptoms which mimic physical illnesses, such as heart attacks. Compared to non-anxious individuals, those with an anxiety disorder are 5X more likely to go to the doctor, and 6X more likely to be hospitalized for psychiatric disorders. Currently, anxiety is the #1 mental health concern in North America. Each year, more than 4 billion prescriptions are filled in the United States alone, of which Paxil and Zoloft are two of the top prescribed medications. Due to lack of medical insurance or funds, many people self-medicate with street drugs and / or alcohol. In fact, 42% of those who struggle with anxiety use recreational drugs. There are many forms of anxiety, of which each affects millions of people: Generalized Anxiety Disorder: 6.8 million, in which women are 2X more likely to be afflicted with than men. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: 2.2 million, which is equally common in both men and women. Panic Disorder: 6 million, in which women are 2X more likely to be afflicted with than men. This often co-exists with depression. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): 7.7 million, in which women are more afflicted. Social Anxiety Disorder: 15 million, which is equally common in both men and women. If you answer "yes" to most items on the included questionnaire, it's likely you could be clinically-diagnosed with anxiety. The bad news is that symptoms don't disappear when ignored. The good news is that with the right help you can regain control of your life, enjoy more fulfilling relationships, find your authenticity, reconnect with your passions, reach goals, express yourself more freely, experience more stable work environments, increase your academic success, break free from addictions, and even have strong spirituality. And that is why this book exists.

Book excerpt: Per Mental Health America, humans are social beings who crave support, value, connection, acceptance, and love. Therapists often tout the human-animal bond. In fact, 98% of pet owners consider their pet a member of the family, 74% report improved mental health symptoms such as stress, fear, anxiety, depression, and loneliness due to a boost of feel-good serotonin and oxytocin levels in the brain. Dove Cosmetics conducted a study of 11,000 women across the globe who were forced to choose between walking through doors marked 'average' or 'beautiful'. 96% rated themselves as 'average' in appearance. This proves how low the international self-esteem, self-acceptance, and self-love rate is for females. Although the authors write about various forms of love, a Gallup poll found that 93% of people in the Philippines feel the most loved on a daily basis. Next is Rwanda with 92% and Puerto Rico at 90%. The United States ranked lower at 81%. Among the countries that felt the least amounts of love were Armenia, Mongolia, Morocco, and Moldova. Other love statistics include 60% of long-distance relationships will work out, 45% of online daters seek a boost in self-confidence, 63% of college students desire a traditional relationship, 40% of Millennials are not willing to settle for the wrong individual just to be in a relationship, 20% of men and 13% of women cheat, with cybersex and online flirting being the most common causes. Studies also found that those who do not practice self-love are most likely to become involved with narcissistic, abusive, codependent, or otherwise unhealthy relationships they soon regret. Avoid becoming a statistic. Learn to love yourself first - including your perceived flaws. In fact, this book exists to help you do just that.

Book excerpt: Understanding and Addressing Girls’ Aggressive Behaviour Problems reflects a major shift in understanding children’s aggressive-behaviour problems. Researchers used to study what went wrong with a troubled child and needed to be fixed; we now aim to understand what is going wrong in children’s relationships that might create, exacerbate, and maintain aggressive-behaviour problems in childhood and adolescence. In this volume, leading researchers in the aggression field examine how problems develop for boys and girls in relationships and how we can help children to develop healthy relationships. Individual chapters explore biological and social contexts, including physical health and relationship problems that might underlie the development of aggressive behaviour problems. The impact of relationships on girls’ development is illustrated to be particularly important for Aboriginal girls. Contributors discuss prevention and intervention strategies that help aggressive children build the requisite skills and relationship capacities and also shift dynamics within critical social contexts, such as the family, peer group, classroom, and school. The support of healthy development not only of children but of their parents and other important adults in their lives, including teachers has been shown to be effective in reducing the burden of suffering associated with aggression among children and adolescents—for youth themselves as well as their families, peers, schools, communities, and society.

Book excerpt: According to the National Association of Mental Illness (NAMI), thankfulness or gratitude is a double-edged sword. Researchers found that those who struggle with symptoms of anxiety and depression often felt indebted, guilty, or "like a failure" because they were not able to find anything to be grateful for. On the positive side, studies have shown that those who feel grateful or thankful sleep better, have lower stress, and experience improved relationships. Practicing gratitude also impacts our emotions. The Mindfulness Awareness Research Center of UCLA stated that gratitude does change the neural structures in the brain and makes us feel happier and more content. Feeling grateful and appreciating others when they do something good for us triggers the 'happy' hormones and regulates the effective functioning of the immune system. Dr. Alex Korb stated that gratitude forces us to focus on the positive parts of life, and it helps train our brain to automatically notice these positive things. This is a way of having positive awareness of the present moment. At the neurochemical level, feeling thankful and expressing gratitude releases serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine responsible for managing emotions, including stress, depression, and anxiety.

The undetected diagnosis sends her down the road to destruction with relationships and finally into a life of crime. Book excerpt: Funny, sad, full of wonderful characters and the word-perfect dialogue of which he is the master, McMurtry brings the Thalia saga to an end with Duane confronting depression in the midst of plenty. Surrounded by his children, who all seem to be going through life crises involving sex, drugs, and violence; his wife, Karla, who is wrestling with her own demons; and friends like Sonny, who seem to be dying, Duane can't seem to make sense of his life anymore. He gradually makes his way through a protracted end-of-life crisis of which he is finally cured by reading Proust's Remembrance of Things Past, a combination of penance, and prescription from Dr. Carmichael that somehow works. Duane's Depressed is the work of a powerful, mature artist, with a deep understanding of the human condition, a profound ability to write about small-town life, and perhaps the surest touch of any American novelist for the tangled feelings that bind and separate men and women.
