Boldini's big break came from a portrait commissioned by Giuseppe Verdi in 1886. Verdi was a Brad Pitt, or a George and Amal Clooney celebrity of the day. Previous to this portrait Boldini had spent years training and mastering his trade in Paris and London, and Holland and Germany 'Giovanni Boldini - People in Paint' is a representation of many of his portraits, oils and watercolor genres. Many of these works are held in private hands of the estates of the subjects. Others eventually found their way into galleries or museums.Boldini's brush work on his paintings was swift and bold. He often presented the subject in soft focus, the brush strokes added life and sophistication to the presentation. Giovanni Boldini simply had to do your portrait you ever wanted a chance at gaining fame as a celebrity. The next volume in this series has places or objects as the main focus of Boldini paintings

Book excerpt: “[An] epic account of life and loves among artists and writers in Paris from belle époque to world slump.” —William Feaver, The Spectator A legendary capital of the arts, Paris hosted some of the most legendary developments in world culture—particularly at the beginning of the twentieth century, with the flowering of fauvism, cubism, dadaism, and surrealism. In Bohemian Paris, Dan Franck leads us on a vivid and magical tour of the Paris of 1900–1930, a hotbed of artistic creation where we encounter Apollinaire, Modigliani, Cocteau, Matisse, Picasso, Hemingway, and Fitzgerald, working, loving, and struggling to stay afloat. Sixteen pages of black-and-white illustrations are featured. “Franck spins lavish historical, biographical, artistic, and even scandalous details into a narrative that will captivate both serious and casual readers . . . Marvelous and informative.” —Carol J. Binkowski, Library Journal

Book excerpt: This is the state-of-the-art report prepared by the RILEM TC “Application of Super Absorbent Polymers (SAP) in concrete construction”. It gives a comprehensive overview of the properties of SAP, specific water absorption and desorption behaviour of SAP in fresh and hardening concrete, effects of the SAP addition on rheological properties of fresh concrete, changes of cement paste microstructure and mechanical properties of concrete. Furthermore, the key advantages of using SAP are described in detail: the ability of this material to act as an internal curing agent to mitigate autogenous shrinkage of high-performance concrete, the possibility to use SAP as an alternative to air-entrainment agents in order to increase the frost resistance of concrete, and finally, the benefit of steering the rheology of fresh cement-based materials. The final chapter describes the first existing and numerous prospective applications for this new concrete additive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RNA viruses cause animal, human, and zoonotic diseases that affect millions of individuals, as is being exemplified by the devastating ongoing epidemic of the recently identified SARS-Cov-2. For years vaccines have had an enormous impact on overcoming the global burden of diseases. Nowadays, a vast number of different approaches, from purified inactivated and live attenuated viruses, nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) based candidates, virus-like particles, subunit elements, and recombinant viruses are been employed to combat viruses. However, for many of them efficient vaccines are not yet available. This will probably change dramatically with the current Covid-19 pandemic, as a vast variety of vaccinology approaches are being tested against it, with hundreds of candidates under development, dozens of them already in clinical trials, a fact that is breaking records in vaccine development and implementation. This is becoming possible thanks to the enormous work carried out during years to have the bases for a quick response, even against unknown pathogens, in an impressive short time. Here, results obtained with different vaccine´s methodological approaches against human (HIV, HCV, HRV) animal (PRRSV, PEDV, FMDV, VHSV) and zoonotic (RVF, WNV), RNA viruses are presented by field experts.

Book excerpt: Paul Klee, the Swiss German painter influenced by expressionism, cubism and surrealism, also produced a number of etchings in his early years, beginning in 1903. These works, remarkable for their technical proficiency, illustrate his evolution from a traditionalist to one of modern art's most daring masters. Previously published in 1945 and 1947, this third revised edition was issued by the Museum of Modern Art and by Graphic Matter in 2013 in a limited edition of 500, printed and bound by Trifolio, Verona. It beautifully reproduces each of Klee/s prints on fine paper, which are accompanied by original texts and an updated list of plates.
