Book excerpt: Warren S. Gilbert grew up on the streets of Chicago, and no one expected him to accomplish much. Even so, his athleticism paved the way for him to attend Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and his intellect led him to Rush Medical College. While most people would have been happy with graduating and becoming a successful physician, he grew bored and moved to Nevada for a fresh start. But as time passed, he sought more meaning out of life and he found it when various branches of the armed services began calling. With his country seeking help from qualified doctors and terrorism on the rise, he joined the US Naval Reserve. But everything changed when terrorists attacked the United States on September 11, 2001. What was supposed to have been a detour turned into a career that would lead to some of his most memorable and meaningful moments. Join Gilbert as he looks back at serving his country, fighting terrorists, and excelling as a member of the US Naval Reserve and then as a physician serving with the Marine Corps. It was all part of pulling double duty as a rifleman and doctor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about new and effective ways to address disease that aren’t commonly used by our physicians. Dr. Chris Gilbert demonstrates that our bodies speak to us all the time. Through symptoms such as fatigue, joint pain, abdominal pain, anxiety, depression, and other symptoms, our bodies let us know that we have a problem and that we need to solve it. Dr. Gilbert, assisted by Dr. Haseltine, shows that by using her “giving the body a voice” technique, sufferers can discover what the symptoms mean and how to fix the often hidden reasons for their health problems. Each chapter reveals a different way of identifying underlying issues. These original, simple, and fun techniques include role-playing, inner group therapy, dream interpretation, art interpretation, nature walks, and even conversations with death. The Listening Cure covers a range of common afflictions, from obesity to back pain, and devotes a full chapter to resolving sexual problems in relationships. By listening to what our bodies have to say, Dr. Gilbert shows how to achieve long term deep cures versus temporary superficial fixes. Her secrets will become your secrets.

Mason's eyewitness account of harrowing episodes that occurred there during the civil rights movement. Newly opened by court order, documents from the Mississippi Sovereignty Commission's secret files enhance this riveting memoir written by a major civil rights figure in Mississippi. He joined his friends and allies Aaron Henry and the martyred Medgar Evers to combat injustices in one of the nation's most notorious bastions of segregation. In Mississippi, the civil rights struggle began in May 1959 with "w

Book excerpt: An exposé on Big Pharma and the American healthcare system’s zeal for excessive medical testing, from a nationally recognized expert More screening doesn’t lead to better health—but can turn healthy people into patients. Going against the conventional wisdom reinforced by the medical establishment and Big Pharma that more screening is the best preventative medicine, Dr. Gilbert Welch builds a compelling counterargument that what we need are fewer, not more, diagnoses. Documenting the excesses of American medical practice that labels far too many of us as sick, Welch examines the social, ethical, and economic ramifications of a health-care system that unnecessarily diagnoses and treats patients, most of whom will not benefit from treatment, might be harmed by it, and would arguably be better off without screening. Drawing on 25 years of medical practice and research on the effects of medical testing, Welch explains in a straightforward, jargon-free style how the cutoffs for treating a person with “abnormal” test results have been drastically lowered just when technological advances have allowed us to see more and more “abnormalities,” many of which will pose fewer health complications than the procedures that ostensibly cure them. Citing studies that show that 10% of 2,000 healthy people were found to have had silent strokes, and that well over half of men over age sixty have traces of prostate cancer but no impairment, Welch reveals overdiagnosis to be rampant for numerous conditions and diseases, including diabetes, high cholesterol, osteoporosis, gallstones, abdominal aortic aneuryisms, blood clots, as well as skin, prostate, breast, and lung cancers. With genetic and prenatal screening now common, patients are being diagnosed not with disease but with “pre-disease” or for being at “high risk” of developing disease. Revealing the economic and medical forces that contribute to overdiagnosis, Welch makes a reasoned call for change that would save us from countless unneeded surgeries, excessive worry, and exorbitant costs, all while maintaining a balanced view of both the potential benefits and harms of diagnosis. Drawing on data, clinical studies, and anecdotes from his own practice, Welch builds a solid, accessible case against the belief that more screening always improves health care.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author and naturopathic physician Dr. Cyndi Gilbert introduces readers to the art and science of forest bathing, the deceptively simple Japanese practice of spending time in the forest as a way to find peace, rejuvenation, and to promote health. Dr. Gilbert shares her own personal history with the practice—how in the midst of an urban sprawl she lost touch with nature, only to rediscover it through the Japanese practice of Shinrin Yoku or forest bathing. In Forest Bathing, you'll discover the health benefits of Shinrin Yoku, from restoring Vitamin D to balancing your microbiome, along with the rich mental and emotional rewards that spending time surrounded by trees can offer. Forest bathing is a restorative, meditative activity for those who practice it by themselves, but Dr. Gilbert also explores the benefits of practicing forest bathing in community with family and friends. Most importantly, the book offers an easy and practical guide to begin your own forest bathing practice along with a resources section to help you further explore the topic. Learn to tap more deeply into your five senses, practice true mindfulness in sacred woodland spaces, and experience the healing impact of nature wherever you are. Book excerpt: Stories about American healthcare have been told in print, on film, on television and radio, and in every form imaginable. The story of American healthcare, however, has never been told in quite the same way as in Dr. Blair Beebe's Doctor Tales. Through lyrical and compelling narrative, Dr. Beebe uses fourteen tales to tell his story of how our healthcare structure evolved to become the most advanced, and problematic, system in the world. Beginning with the viewpoint of an impressionable twenty-one-year-old first-year medical student, he continues with numerous patient encounters in hospital settings, and ends with a fictional community's response to an avian influenza epidemic transposed from a real outbreak in the Far East. Doctor Tales draws from the lives of real doctors, nurses, and patients to show the changes that have occurred during the second half of the twentieth century that have led to spectacular new treatments, and equally stunning shortfalls in healthcare.

Christians, unfortunately, are not immune to mental stress, worry, and the assault of care and anxiety. This need not be so, for Christ and His Word offer the answer. Dr. Little, author of Nervous Christians, is a Christian pyschiatrist with many years of experience in dealing with the mental and psychological problems of uncounted men and women. He combines the skill of a trained physician with a dedicated Christian's knowledge of God's Word and God's love. He takes into consideration the factors other psychiatrists weigh, but also considers the part played by Satan the deceiver in the life of troubled Christians. A careful reading of this book will help you to understand more clearly why so many people, even Christians, become disturbed and confused, and how such difficulties can be cured through Christ. You will find the book interesting, enlightening, and most helpful.
