Book excerpt: This study sought to examine how gifted adolescent girls perceive the social and academic worlds they occupy. Seven gifted/academically successful girls (four 7th graders, three 9th graders) from a suburban Northwest junior high school were selected for in-depth surveys and one-on-one interviews regarding their social and academic milieus. Their responses showed a strict delineation between the social and the academic both in terms of demands and criteria for success. Hierarchies, relationships, self-identification and pressures were discussed in relation to social status and academic accomplishment. Academic achievement was usually perceived as being at odds with social interaction, forcing the girls to make a conscious decision to focus on the former at the expense of the latter. Suggestions to ease conflict between the social and the academic include the introduction of more "female-friendly" teaching practices such as cooperative learning and teaming.
