Die Beschäftigung mit dieser Fragestellung erwächst aus einem ureigensten Interesse meinerseits: Denn Tag für Tag sehe ich mich im Umgang mit meiner Umwelt vor Situationen gestellt, in denen ich entscheiden muss, wie ich zu handeln oder einen Sachverhalt zu bewerten habe. Zum Beispiel: Ist es in Ordnung, eine auf der Straße gefundene Brieftasche zu behalten, anstatt sie dem Besitzer zurückzugeben? Meine Antwort: Nein! Doch was ist die Ursache für meine Haltung bzw. woran orientiere ich mich bei meiner Entscheidungsfindung? An Recht und Gesetz? Oder vielleicht an der Instanz der Moral? Was ist Moral überhaupt? Gibt es ein richtiges und falsches moralisches Handeln? Sind es allgemeine gesellschaftliche Normen und Werte, die mir Orientierung bieten? Oder eigene moralische Grundsätze? Gibt es eine universelle Moral? All diese Fragen zeigen bereits die Komplexität der Thematik. Damit verbunden werde ich u.a. der Frage nachgehen, ob äußere Instanzen wie Politik, Religion, Medien und Gesellschaft oder innere wie das sogenannte Gewissen der Maßstab dafür sein können, ob und wie wir moralisch grundsätzlich richtig oder falsch handeln. Von besonderem Interesse wird das konfliktreiche Verhältnis zwischen persönlichen Beziehungen (z.B. zwischen zwei sich liebenden Menschen) und universellen moralischen Forderungen (z. B. die Aufforderung, im Sinne des Allgemeinwohls zu handeln) sein.

But there’s a problem: the content and justification of morality are matters of reasonable disagreement among reasonable people. This makes it hard to see how educators can secure children’s commitment to moral standards without indoctrinating them. In A Theory of Moral Education, Michael Hand tackles this problem head on. He sets out to show that moral education can and should be fully rational. It is true that many moral standards and justificatory theories are controversial, and educators have an obligation to teach these nondirectively, with the aim of enabling children to form their own considered views. But reasonable moral disagreement does not go all the way down: some basic moral standards are robustly justified, and these should be taught directively, with the aim of bringing children to recognise and understand their authority. This is an original and important contribution to the philosophy of moral education, which lays a new theoretical foundation for the urgent practical task of teaching right from wrong.
