The report lists 272 known giant oil fields containing 76.7 percent of the 1011.5 billion barrels of recoverable crude oil resources as of 1975. The 33 known super-giant (5 billion barrels or more) fields contain more than half of the total. The number of giant fields discovered has been at a high plateau since the early 1960s. The amount discovered in giant fields has dropped sharply during this same period because of a precipitous decline in the number of super-giant discoveries. Ultimate conventional world oil resources are estimated to be between 1700 and 2300 billion barrels. Because few super-giants are likely to be discovered and the discovery rate of other giant fields will soon decline, most future additions will come from additional recovery from known fields, not new discoveries.

U.S. petroleum resources are highly concentrated in a few major provinces and in a relatively small number of giant and large fields. Since the peaks in oil discoveries about 1930 and natural gas about 1950, both the number of discoveries and the amounts discovered have declined substantially. The authors conclude that most of the conventional petroleum that will ultimately be produced has already been discovered and made recoverable. Ultimate recovery will most likely be between 210 and 285 billion barrels of petroleum liquids and 920 to 1,090 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, as compared with known recovery of 175 billion barrels and 750 trillion cubic feet.

Book excerpt: This paper explores the effect of news shocks on the current account and other macroeconomic variables using worldwide giant oil discoveries as a directly observable measure of news shocks about future output ? the delay between a discovery and production is on average 4 to 6 years. We first present a two-sector small open economy model in order to predict the responses of macroeconomic aggregates to news of an oil discovery. We then estimate the effects of giant oil discoveries on a large panel of countries. Our empirical estimates are consistent with the predictions of the model. After an oil discovery, the current account and saving rate decline for the first 5 years and then rise sharply during the ensuing years. Investment rises robustly soon after the news arrives, while GDP does not increase until after 5 years. Employment rates fall slightly for a sustained period of time.
