Book excerpt: Peter Mason takes a bold, multidisciplinary approach in this account of the idea of the colossal in culture. He gathers instances of the colossal throughout history—including the obelisks of Egypt, the Colossus of Rhodes, the Roman Colosseum, the heads of the Olmecs, and the stone statues of Easter Island—using historical and archaeological evidence to position them within the context of time and culture. Mason establishes a vision of the colossal that encompasses both the colossal in scale and another, overlooked sense of the word: the archaic Greek kolossos, a ritual effigy, and its modern equivalents. Combining fascinating detail with a rigorous account that spans three millennia, The Colossal argues that the artist who best understood and tapped into the kolossos was Alberto Giacometti. Mason shows that the Swiss sculptor and painter’s work articulated themes of death and mourning in ways rarely seen since the art of archaic Greece, themes most evident in his enigmatic work, The Cube. From the monolithic sculptures of long-dead civilizations to Giacometti’s imposing and unsettling heads, The Colossal is an innovative book that traces unexplored thematic threads through visual history.

Book excerpt: Art and Mourning explores the relationship between creativity and the work of self-mourning in the lives of 20th century artists and thinkers. The role of artistic and creative endeavours is well-known within psychoanalytic circles in helping to heal in the face of personal loss, trauma, and mourning. In this book, Esther Dreifuss-Kattan, a psychoanalyst, art therapist and artist - analyses the work of major modernist and contemporary artists and thinkers through a psychoanalytic lens. In coming to terms with their own mortality, figures like Albert Einstein, Louise Bourgeois, Paul Klee, Eva Hesse and others were able to access previously unknown reserves of creative energy in their late works, as well as a new healing experience of time outside of the continuous temporality of everyday life. Dreifuss-Kattan explores what we can learn about using the creative process to face and work through traumatic and painful experiences of loss. Art and Mourning will inspire psychoanalysts and psychotherapists to understand the power of artistic expression in transforming loss and traumas into perseverance, survival and gain. Art and Mourning offers a new perspective on trauma and will appeal to psychoanalysts and psychotherapists, psychologists, clinical social workers and mental health workers, as well as artists and art historians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sculpture and the Museum is the first in-depth examination of the varying roles and meanings assigned to sculpture in museums and galleries during the modern period, from neo-classical to contemporary art practice. It considers a rich array of curatorial strategies and settings in order to examine the many reasons why sculpture has enjoyed a position of such considerable importance - and complexity - within the institutional framework of the museum and how changes to the museum have altered, in turn, the ways that we perceive the sculpture within it. In particular, the contributors consider the complex issue of how best to display sculpture across different periods and according to varying curatorial philosophies. Sculptors discussed include Canova, Rodin, Henry Moore, Flaxman and contemporary artists such as Rebecca Horn, Rachel Whiteread, Mark Dion and Olafur Eliasson, with a variety of museums in America, Canada and Europe presented as case studies. Underlying all of these discussions is a concern to chart the critical importance of the acquisition, placement and display of sculpture in museums and to explore the importance of sculptures as a forum for the expression of programmatic statements of power, prestige and the museum's own sense of itself in relation to its audiences and its broader institutional aspirations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1954, the French writer, politician, and publisher André Malraux posed at home for a photographer from the magazine Paris Match, surrounded by pages from his forthcoming book Le musée imaginaire de la sculpture mondiale. The enchanting metaphor of the musée imaginaire (imaginary museum) was built upon that illustrated art book, and Malraux was one of its greatest champions. Drawing on a range of contemporary publications, he adopted images and responded to ideas. Indeed, Malraux’s book on the floor is a variation of photographer André Vigneau’s spectacular Encyclopédie photographique de l’art, published in five volumes from 1935 on—years before Malraux would enter this field. Both authors were engaged in juxtaposing artworks via photographs and publishing these photographs by the hundreds, but Malraux was the better sloganeer. Starting from a close examination of the photograph of Malraux in his salon, art historian Walter Grasskamp takes the reader back to the dawn of this genre of illustrated art book. He shows how it catalyzed the practice of comparing works of art on a global scale. He retraces the metaphor to earlier reproduction practices and highlights its ubiquity in contemporary art, ending with an homage to the other pioneer of the “museum without walls,” the unjustly forgotten Vigneau.

Book excerpt: "Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) always saw himself at the center of a cosmos of events and people, a notion that characterized his examination of the relation between figure, time, and space, and in which the members of his family played an important role. Alberto's father, the painter Giovanni Giacometti, encouraged his son from an early age. His brother Diego was his assistant and model, and after Alberto's death, he became famous for his bronze furniture. Bruno, the youngest brother and a renowned architect; Annetta, his mother; Annette, Alberto's wife; and Silvio, the son of his sister Ottilia, who died in childbirth, were all indispensable models for him. Finally, although he was only a distant relative, Augusto Giacometti, whose abstract paintings continue to fascinate viewers to this day, was the "other genius" of the Giacometti family." "This generously illustrated publication based on the latest developments in research, this publication is devoted to the great sculptor, painter, and draftsman Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) and his family. Focusing on Alberto's works, it traces the lives of the Giacomettis and provides a deeper understanding of the art produced by its most famous member." --Book Jacket.

Written by distinguished artists and scholars with psychoanalytic training, this seminal collection of essays spans the humanities-painting, sculpture, literature, history, anthropology, and philosophy-illustrating how psychoanalytic thinking can powerfully enhance these disciplines. The essayists address a question first posed by Freud in his 1919 article, Should Psychoanalysis Be Taught at the University? With a resounding Yes, they underline the intellectual enrichment to be gained from the application of the psychoanalytic method to humanistic disciplines and, conversely, the need for contemporary psychoanalysts to acquire the kind of historical and classical education taken for granted by their counterparts earlier in this century.

Book excerpt: SCULPTURE. Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) was the son of the Swiss painter Giovanni Giacometti. Born and raised in Val Bregaglia, after 1922 he lived primarily inParis following studies in Geneva and Rome . He created a stir among the Surrealists in the thirties, and was active as a lamp and vase designer. He developed his noted late work, extremely thin bronze figures symbolic of human existence, during and after World War II. This volume from the series Art to Read is an outstanding introduction to the life and work of this important and simultaneously puzzling artist, one who decisively influenced our understanding of sculpture in space.
