Book excerpt: HarperCollins is proud to present its incredible range of best-loved, essential classics. 'At first you saw only a mass of coarse, matted black hair; presently it was seen that this covered a body of fearful thinness, almost a skeleton, but with the muscles standing out like wires' M.R. James' ghost stories are brimming with delicate horror. They take place in the quiet corners of churches, and between the dusty shelves of esteemed college libraries. But when Professor Parkin discovers a whistle in a Templar ruin, or Sir Richard Fell inherits a country manor with a horrifying history, malevolent forces are unleashed. Something half-glimpsed, something not of this world, is preparing to disturb the silence. Having terrified generations since its first publication in 1904, Ghost Stories of an Antiquary is a collection that will haunt the reader's imagination long after the lights have gone out.

James’s writings currently available Count Magnus and Other Ghost Stories contains the entire first two volumes of James’s ghost stories, Ghost Stories of an Antiquary and More Ghost Stories of an Antiquary. These volumes are both the culmination of the nineteenth-century ghost story tradition and the inspiration for much of the best twentieth-century work in this genre. Included in this collection are such landmark tales as “Count Magnus,” set in the wilds of Sweden; “Number 13,” a distinctive tale about a haunted hotel room; “Casting the Runes,” a richly complex tale of sorcery that served as the basis for the classic horror film Curse of the Demon; and “Oh, Whistle, and I’ll Come to You, My Lad,” one of the most frightening tales in literature. The appendix includes several rare texts, including “A Night in King’s College Chapel,” James’s first known ghost story. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Download or read book Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (Classic Reprint) written by M. R. James and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ghost Stories of an Antiquary I wrote these stories at long intervals, and most of them were read to patient friends, usually at the season of Christmas. One of these friends offered to illustrate them, and it was agreed that, if he would do that, I would consider the question of publishing them. Four pictures he completed, which will be found in this volume, and then, very quickly and unexpectedly, he was taken away. This is the reason why the greater part of the stories are not provided with illustrations. Those who knew the artist will understand how much I wished to give a permanent form even to a fragment of his work; others will appreciate the fact that here a remem brance is made of one in whom many friend ships centred. The stories themselves do not make any very exalted claim. If any of them succeed in causing their readers to feel pleasantly uncomfortable when walking along a solitary road at nightfall, or sitting over a dying fire in the small hours, my purpose in writing them will have been attained. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It would be tough to identify a writer whose ghost stories are more effective than those of Montague Rhodes James. Edith Wharton and Shirley Jackson are among the few whose work approaches that of James. If you are a connoisseur or collector, this title would be among the last you would part with as you sold your collection one volume at a time to buy life-sustaining soup. Atmosphere (both psychological and positional), character development, settings - all of these are handled with mastery. I love M.R. James! His work is fairly hard to find these days I would encourage anyone who likes a good spooky story to pick up this title.. Buy this book, retreat to a quiet room lit by a single lamp (and, preferably, a sputtering fire), and enjoy!
