Book excerpt: Following the Communist takeover of Romania in 1945, Dr. Stanciu Stroia refused to join the party, suffering professional humiliation and political persecution. He was arrested in 1951 and sentenced to seven years in prison; his estate was nationalized, his family exiled, and his practice confiscated. Ill with scurvy, he survived the prison ordeal and wrote his memoir, despite the risk of being detained again. "Stanciu Stroia's fortitude is astonishing...My Second University has an important place in the prison literature published since 1989." - Keith Hitchins, Professor of History, University of Illinois "An utterly impressive prison memoir...a most necessary and valuable contribution to our understanding of the survival of human dignity under conditions of abysmal pressure." - Vladimir Tismaneanu, Professor of Government and Politics, University of Maryland My Second University will take readers back to another place in time, in another country, seeing life through the eyes of a courageous man and others who chose to suffer rather than give up their freedom...It is a piece of history necessary to consume, necessary to remember." - Times Mail (Bedford, Indiana) With thirty-six pages of original photographs and one thousand never-before-published names of political detainees. Book Synopsis Periodization in the Art Historiographies of Central and Eastern Europe by : Shona Kallestrup
Download or read book Periodization in the Art Historiographies of Central and Eastern Europe written by Shona Kallestrup and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-06-07 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume critically investigates how art historians writing about Central and Eastern Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries engaged with periodization. At the heart of much of their writing lay the ideological project of nation-building. Hence discourses around periodization – such as the mythicizing of certain periods, the invention of historical continuity and the assertion of national specificity – contributed strongly to identity construction. Central to the book’s approach is a transnational exploration of how the art histories of the region not only interacted with established Western periodizations but also resonated and ‘entangled’ with each other. In their efforts to develop more sympathetic frameworks that refined, ignored or hybridized Western models, they sought to overcome the centre–periphery paradigm which equated distance from the centre with temporal belatedness and artistic backwardness. The book thus demonstrates that the concept of periodization is far from neutral or strictly descriptive, and that its use in art history needs to be reconsidered. Bringing together a broad range of scholars from different European institutions, the volume offers a unique new perspective on Central and Eastern European art historiography. It will be of interest to scholars working in art history, historiography and European studies.
Book Synopsis Circulations in the Global History of Art by : Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann
Download or read book Circulations in the Global History of Art written by Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project of global art history calls for balanced treatment of artifacts and a unified approach. This volume emphasizes questions of transcultural encounters and exchanges as circulations. It presents a strategy that highlights the processes and connections among cultures, and also responds to the dynamics at work in the current globalized art world. The editors’ introduction provides an account of the historical background to this approach to global art history, stresses the inseparable bond of theory and practice, and suggests a revaluation of materialist historicism as an underlying premise. Individual contributions to the book provide an overview of current reflection and research on issues of circulation in relation to global art history and the globalization of art past and present. They offer a variety of methods and approaches to the treatment of different periods, regions, and objects, surveying both questions of historiography and methodology and presenting individual case studies. An 'Afterword' by James Elkins gives a critique of the present project. The book thus deliberately leaves discussion open, inviting future responses to the large questions it poses.

Book Synopsis Repression, Resistance and Collaboration in Stalinist Romania 1944-1964 by : Monica Ciobanu
Download or read book Repression, Resistance and Collaboration in Stalinist Romania 1944-1964 written by Monica Ciobanu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-14 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how the process of remembering Stalinist repression in Romania has shifted from individual, family, and group representations of lived and witnessed experiences characteristic of the 1990s to more recent and state-sponsored expressions of historical remembrance through their incorporation in official commemorations, propaganda sites, and restorative and compensatory measures. Based on fieldwork dealing with Stalinist repression and memorialization, together with archival research on the secret police (Securitate), it adopts an interdisciplinary approach to reveal the resurfacing of particular themes. As such it draws on concepts from sociology, political science, and legal studies, related to memory, justice, redress, identity, accountability, and reconciliation. A study of competing narratives concerning the meaning of the past as part of a struggle over the legitimacy of the post-communist state, Repression, Resistance, and Collaboration in Stalinist Romania 1944–1964 combines memory studies with a transitional justice approach that will appeal to scholars of sociology, heritage and memory studies, politics, and law.
Book Synopsis Constantin Brancusi by : Sanda Miller
Download or read book Constantin Brancusi written by Sanda Miller and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2010-05-15 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acknowledged as one of the major sculptors and avant-garde artists of the twentieth century, Constantin Brancusi (1876–1957) was also one of the most elusive, despite his fame. His mysterious nature was not only due to his upbringing in Romania—which, at the time, was still regarded by much of Europe as a backward country haunted by vampires and werewolves—but also because Brancusi was aware that myth and an aura of otherness appealed to the public. His self-mythology remained intact until the publication of Brancusi in 1986 by Romanian artists Alexandre Istrati and Natalia Dumitresco, who made available a small selection of the archive of Brancusi’s correspondence. And in 2003, a comprehensive catalogue, which made the bulk of Brancusi’s private correspondence public for the first time, was published by the Centre Pompidou to accompany a retrospective on Brancusi’s work. In Constantin Brancusi, Sanda Miller employs these extensive new resources to better assess Brancusi’s life and work in relationship to each other, providing valuable and innovative insights into his relationships with friends, collectors, dealers and lovers. Miller’s perceptive book allows Brancusi to finally take his rightful place among the most important of the intellectual personalities who shaped twentieth-century modernism.
Book Synopsis Language and Travel Guide to Romania by : Rosemary Rennon
Download or read book Language and Travel Guide to Romania written by Rosemary Rennon and published by Hippocrene Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rosemary Rennon discovered Romania in 1993 when she went hunting for the small village where her father was born. She was captivated by its scenery and by the simplicity of a country just awakening from its long communist nightmare. Unfamiliar to many due to its long isolation, Romania is comprised of five distinct regions resulting from both their unique landscapes and their historical populations of Dacians, Romanians, Germans, Hungarians and Turks. In addition to its rolling green hills and valleys, with the arc of the Carpathian mountain chain in its centre, the country's southeastern region on the Black Sea provides a massive wildlife refuge, as well as miles of sandy beach resorts. Its cities are filled with outstanding architectural gems and modern activities. All this, plus a fascinating, turbulent history and the lovely Romanian tongue-considered by many to be the original romance language-belong to a culture one will never want to leave.
