(Büttner, Christian/ Nicklas, Hans, 1984, S.10) Wird von Gewalt in Ehe und Partnerschaft gesprochen, muß man festhalten, dass dabei in der Regel Männergewalt gemeint, die immer gegen Frauen allgemein gerichtet ist und kein neues soziales Problem darstellt. Züchtigungsrecht und Prügelstrafe waren bis in die jüngere Vergangenheit ein unangefochtenes Privileg des Mannes/ Vaters in der Familie. 1902 entfiel das Züchtigungsrecht des Mannes gegen die Frau durch das BGB, aber auch heute noch mißhandeln (Ehe-)Partner aller sozialen Schichten ihre Frauen mit dem Glauben, dass sie dazu berechtigt seien. Das Ausmaß bzw. die "Normalität" dieses Gewalthandelns stellt ein großes Problemfeld dar. Dass Gewalthandlungen im häuslichen Bereich keine Einzelfälle, sondern alltäglich sind, zeigen diese Zahlen: Mehr als ein Drittel aller Morde und Totschläge werden innerhalb der Familie verübt. Über 80% aller aufgeklärten Gewaltdelikte werden von Tätern begangen, die mit dem Opfer unmittelbar verwandt, verschwägert oder befreundet sind. Der allgemeinen Einschätzung nach ist die Dunkelziffer der Mißhandlungen in Ehe und Partnerschaft außerordentlich hoch. Warum das so ist, wird im Verlauf dieser Arbeit aufgezeigt. Zu Beginn soll 'Gewalt' im Allgemeinen und 'Gewalt gegen Frauen' im Besonderen genauer definiert sowie Formen und das Ausmaß der Gewalt beleuchtet werden. Zusammen mit den Folgen für mißhandelte Frauen, kann dann zu der Frage übergeleitet werden: Wie und warum dulden Frauen Gewalt ? Arthur Schopenhauer hat sich dazu geäußert: "Der Quäler und der Gequälte sind Eines. Jener irrt, indem er sich der Qual, dieser, indem er sich der Schuld nicht teilhaft macht." Im Anschluß daran, wird es notwendig die Ursachen der Gewalt aufzudecken und unter anderem genauer auf gesellschaftliche Bedingungen sowie auslösende Faktoren einzugehen. Die intensive, seit Jahren aktuelle Diskussion und Auseinandersetzung mit der Problematik Gewalt in Ehe und Partnerschaft geht auf die Anstrengungen der Frauenbewegung in den 70iger Jahren zurück. In dieser Zeit wurden auch erste Interventionsmöglichkeiten eingerichtet, die sich vorrangig an den mißhandelte Frauen orientierten. Frauenhäuser wurden gegründet und Beratungsstellen spezialisierten sich auf diese Problematik. Erst im Laufe der letzten Jahre entwickelte man Angebote für gewalttätige Männer und Gesetze zur Sanktionierung wurden erlassen.
