Book excerpt: From the glory days of the railroad to today's gridlocked, six-lane highway, Getting There dramatizes America's shift from rail to road transportation, how it has robbed Americans of the choice of travel options enjoyed by Europeans, and why it threatens the nation's economic future. Stephen B. Goddard reveals how government joined automakers and roadbuilders to nearly destroy the rails, and why the 21st century will witness high-tech remedies and a railroad resurgence.

Walking on a deserted beach, he meets Selph, a precocious, overweight, wisecracking, sloppily-dressed teenager, who appears out of nowhere and claims to be his long-sought after spiritual teacher. Wanting to get Adam's attention, Selph brings a long-dead seabird back to life. Thus begins this funny, insightful, dramatic, and fast-paced adventure about the meaning of life. With Selph's wit, antics, and not-so-gentle guidance, Adam evolves from embittered selfishness to understanding life, death, and the spiritual basis of the universe. Against a background of passionate romance, injury, pain and the harsh beauty of Australia, this magical story will enlighten, entertain and inspire you to appreciate and celebrate life-no matter what the circumstances of 'fate' may bring your way.

Book excerpt: A picture book collaboration with World Vision that celebrates life the world over! From the moment we take our first steps, it seems we are always on the move. Pictured here are the many and unusual ways we get around. Whether they go on their own two feet, by wheeled vehicle, water craft, animal power, or by air, children find some unorthodox and truly imaginative ways to “get there.” This delightful series is the result of the collaboration between Tundra Books and World Vision Canada to bring an array of exceptional photos from around the world to very young children. Each book centers on a universal theme, familiar by its very nature, yet new due to faraway settings and ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic diversity. Each remarkable photo essay will foster discussion, observation, and many smiles as children compare and contrast their own experience to that of others. Watch for further books in this series.

Book excerpt: You have just been tapped on the shoulder, your hard work has paid off-it's time to celebrate getting there and quickly adjust to new expectations. Now comes the challenge: staying there! Now is when you learn that the skills that got you there-to a level in your career-are different from the ones you need to stay there. Priscilla Douglas has been there, as an executive herself and as a leadership coach to C-suite executives in a broad range of industries. In this book she shares her unique approach to accelerating your career progress, using a model based on agility. It takes agility to see opportunities and move into them, then stay there and move forward every day towards ever-higher objectives. Like athletes, agile executives recognize what is going on, they adjust their thinking, they align themselves with the situation, then they act. Getting There and Staying There is built around questions. As you read, you will ask yourself questions and discover the answers that work for you at this time in your career. You can revisit these questions at another time and the answers might be different. The important thing is to keep asking the questions. Getting There and Staying There is your take-anywhere "coach in your briefcase." Use it on an airplane or a weekend afternoon-anytime you have an hour or two to devote to improving your performance, your relationships, and your capacity to lead. Each chapter is a mini session with one of the country's best leadership coaches. Priscilla Douglas doesn't give you the answers. She asks you the hard questions, provides true-story examples, and helps you find your own answers-the ones that are unique to you and your situation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chronicles the lived experience/educational journeys of women who found themselves moving forward together pursuing doctoral degrees in Educational Leadership. Grounded in the realities of women’s lives these inspirational first-person narratives have the potential to raise awareness regarding women’s socialization, expectations, and the role interpersonal and community connections play in the lived female experience. This book provides a potential resource for those considering how relationships and support groups impact life’s journey, and their importance in overcoming barriers to educational attainment and success. In her book Flux, Peggy Orenstein encourages women to share their experiences, and “talk across lines of age and circumstance” (p. 292). This book does that, bringing into focus the complicated and convoluted, knotty, thorny, messy realities of women’s lives. Seeing clearly the forest and the trees, the grass, the shrubs, and dirt—the fully fleshed-out realities, we, as educators, can more fully and accurately see and appreciate the conflicting, competing chaos that characterizes and often monopolizes women’s lives; and from there establish a foundation of understanding from which to begin retooling higher education to better meet the life and learning needs of all our students. “In the end...” Orenstein says, “...there is no single path to a textured, satisfying life-nor should there be” (p. 293); and indeed, as this book reveals there is not. Despite geographical and generational differences, these women’s independent and intersecting lives created, and even today supports and sustains their ongoing connection, empowerment and achievements, and as such not only leaves a legacy for others, but a blueprint of and for hope.

Then there was business project management, a tool described as 'the wave of the future'. Where are architects in all this, professionals whose work has always been project-driven? There is design management in engineering, product design, graphics, packaging, management theory and even in politics. Construction consultants talk about managing design. When are architects going to become committed to managing design? Getting There by Design adopts an architect's view to design and project management. It sets out the fundamental principles and shows how they are applied, dealing with these two topics as one indivisible subject. 'Getting There by Design' demonstrates how to: - make project efforts goal-oriented - set up a planning and monitoring basis to architectural projects - put the architect's fee calculus on a rationale basis - diagnose your firm's practice culture - develop successful teams Put your practice onto a more effective basis. Ken Allinson is an architect in private practice and principal of 'Architectural Dialogue'. He also teaches design studio and lectures on design and project management. He was formerly an associate at DEGW London and the Terry Farrell Partnership. He has practice experience in Europe, the USA and Japan and is the author of 'The Wild Card of Design' (1993).

Book excerpt: "Not just another business autobiography, this is a fascinating and uplifting look into one man's leadership journey through poverty, hardship, racism, and betrayal to becoming one of the most inspirational business leaders of our time." -Jane Marvin, former SVP human resources, Ross Stores, Inc. Bob Knowling is respected by many of America's most admired executives, from Jack Welch to Michael Bloomberg. He has led large organizations through periods of dramatic transformation; management guru Noel Tichy calls him "a change agent's change agent." But even more impressive than Knowling's résumé is the road he took to the top. He grew up as one of thirteen children in Indiana, shuttling between the homes of his divorced parents, surrounded by crime, poverty, drug abuse, and racism. Later he lived and worked on his grandparents' farm in Missouri. No one encouraged him to have big ambitions or even bothered to ask, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" But Knowling used his athletic and academic talents to earn a college scholarship and later an MBA. He became an expert at leading change-helping others see a better future, then work hard to make it real. Knowling's story proves that almost any disadvantage can be overcome with persistence and a passion for excellence. And it teaches us how to embrace change rather than cling to the past. It is easy to lose sight of our potential in a time of economic turmoil, joblessness, and confusion. Knowling reminds us that none of those conditions is permanent and, more important, that none of them excuses us from making a concerted effort at whatever we try to do. As he puts it, "You turn around organizations, in most cases, by turning around individuals. . . . The real lesson of transformation is that it happens not in companies and not in offices, but in lives." Knowling believes that we do not define ourselves by our upbringing or the external conditions of our lives. It's our response to those conditions that counts. It's not where you came from; it's what you do with your potential. You'll be amazed to learn where Knowling came from and how he got from a really distant "there" to a very inspiring "here."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth Wright had it all. A comfortable life, successful business, house, handsome partner and beautiful baby. Then things screwed up. She discovered that the man in her life was being unfaithful, and her prosperous pet centre crashed into a financial black hole. At fifty-two, and menopausal, she was reduced to being a single mum on benefits with the stigma of bankruptcy. Left with just a negative equity house harnessed to a hefty mortgage, she had to face an impoverished lifestyle along with a succession of jobs which either folded or relocated. In this hilarious book she recounts how she quickly learnt to juggle work and child care, keep an ancient car on the road that already had one wheel in the Great Breaker's Yard in the Sky, whilst her money-saving efforts to grow her own food, were defeated by thieving blackbirds, munching molluscs and exploding bags of donkey manure. Dog sitting was a disaster, with fleas, mangy animals and an amorous owner with a dodgy trouser zip. There were cockroaches in the takeaway, drunks in the bakery, and a parcel sealing machine with pit bull attitude in the factory. Then, after all her efforts, the Trustees of the Bankruptcy stated that her only asset, the house, was back into equity and would have to be sold to pay the debtors. Fighting this, she worked fourteen hours a day, raised the required £30,000, kept the house, had the bankruptcy annulled and, with a great sense of humour, wrote this book.
