Book excerpt: "This is a book about getting, and staying, involved with God--what it takes, what it costs, what it looks and feels like, why anyone would want to do it anyway. It is at the same time a book about reading the Old Testament as a source of Good News and guidance for our life with God. The key piece of Good News that the Old Testament communicates over and over again is that God is involved with us, deeply and irrevocably so." --from the Introduction With sound scholarship and her own vivid translations from the Hebrew, Old Testament professor Ellen Davis teaches us a spiritually engaged method of reading scripture. Beginning with the psalms, whose frank prayers can be a model for our own, Davis reflects on the stories of the patriarchs and the pastoral wisdom of the book of Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Songs in helping us cultivate those habits of the heart that lead to a rich relationship with God.

This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business is increasingly affected by the impacts of globalization. The technological progress, as well as monetary systems have made prices comparable beyond borders. If German companies want to withstand the global competition, they have to develop sustainable internationalization strategies. Since the risks of entering into a strategic alliance are comparatively low in contrast to other internationalization options, this topic has gained in importance. But a sound preparation is inevitable in order to succeed. While technological and economical risks of alliances can be reduced easily by a solid preparation, the social risks are highly dependent on the individuals involved and thus hard to prevent. Especially in international strategic alliances including the additional complexity of different national cultures, social problems can be of high importance. German companies which prefer to enter into foreign markets should carefully get acquainted with the foreign country?s cultural norms and values. Up to today, many approaches have been made to define culture and various studies have been performed driven by the desire to understand and provide explanations for cultural differences. The results of those studies can be used to evaluate the impacts of a national culture and its specifics on strategic alliances. Yet, a theoretical study of a foreign culture cannot replace practical experiences. However, it can provide a starting point which helps to understand and accept the behavior of a foreign culture. Research results provide a good foundation for the identification of basic assumptions which underlie a foreign national culture. The general framework of another culture can be investigated, understood, and even be learned to a certain extent. Nevertheless, nothing can substitute personal experiences with another culture and its specific beliefs and values. Due to the enormous population, especially in China and India, broadly diversified cultural norms and values according to cultural subcategories can be presumed. As the volume of international trade is likely to further grow, German companies will be faced with internationalization strategies also in the future. If they want to gain a sustainable competitive advantage while going international, German companies will continuously be forced to deal with cultural matters. A broadly diversified workforce will contribute to this understanding and hence to the international success. Nevertheless, the cultural values and beliefs of a nation cannot be completely generalized. Rather, geographical differences and other cultural subcategories have to be borne in mind. Some studies about cultural differences have already included such approaches to regional or religious differences, but further research is necessary in this field. Yet, social risks in international strategic alliances which are related to the individuals involved can never be excluded altogether.

Book excerpt: The single Community Programme is a Government initiative which seeks to encourage local community participation in local policy-making across England and in the design of the public services they receive. The initiative is expected to cost around £182 million between the years 2001-2006 and targets the most deprived local authority districts in England. It seeks to ensure the representation of diverse community needs through the provision of grants to community groups involved in improving their neighbourhoods, and support for community empowerment networks that help communities influence local decision-making. The scheme has so far supported around 25,000 separate self-help and community projects, funded directly through local voluntary sector organisations. This report focuses on the effectiveness of the single Community Programme in encouraging communities to get involved in neighbourhood renewal and regeneration schemes, and seeks to identify broader lessons of relevance to community participation initiatives across the whole of government.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes how school systems across the nation are seeking new ways to involve parents while strengthening efforts already in place. The introduction describes the need for strengthening the school's ties to the community, in light of increasing numbers of children living in conditions that predispose them to being at risk, such as poverty, drug addiction, divorce, and exposure to violence. Chapter 1 establishes that parent involvement improves student achievement. It discusses the benefits for parents, students, teachers, and administrators; the barriers to parent involvement; and school practices to encourage participation. The second chapter describes and presents examples of survey instruments that can be used to assess school-family relations. Chapter 3 presents four basic models of parent involvement and highlights three successful models implemented across the country. Types of parent-involvement programs and corresponding program designs are described in chapter 4. Guidelines for institutionalizing plans and practices through the formation of policy statements are offered in the fifth chapter. The final chapter provides strategies for involving hard-to-reach and at-risk parents. A list of professional organizations is included. (Contains 78 references.) (LMI)

Book excerpt: This savvy, straightforward book pairs real women's stories with research and the expertise of a domestic violence counselor to help women of all ages identify Dangerous Men -- before they become too involved. Brown describes eight types of Dangerous Men, their specific traits and characteristics. In separate chapters, she explores victim’s stories that tell how they came in contact with this type of Dangerous Man and their outcome. Brown then shows readers how to develop a Defense Strategy -- how to spot, avoid, or rid themselves of this type of Dangerous Man. Brown explains women's innate "red flag" systems -- how they work to signal impending danger, and why many women learn to ignore them. With red flags in hand, Brown then guides readers through their own personal experiences to develop a personalized "Do Not Date" list. With these tools, Brown shows women how they can spot and avoid patterns of engagement with Dangerous Men.

How to Get Involved, Speak Out, and Win in a World on Fire A society that actively combats racism, treats climate change as a serious threat, and ensures that all people have a living wage and a decent life for themselves and their families is not a progressive pipe dream. Victories are being won every day, all over the country. But they didn't happen just by clicking “donate” on a website. Gordon Whitman says that fundamental change demands forming the kind of face-to-face relationships that have sustained every social movement in history. For two decades, Whitman has been working with PICO National Network to equip tens of thousands to fight racial discrimination and economic injustice. He brings that experience to this book, describing five kinds of conversations that enable people to create organizations that can successfully overcome the forces of oppression and reaction. The first conversation to have is with ourselves, to make sure we're clear about our purpose and in it for the long haul. Then we need to share the personal story of how we came to this point with others—there is no more powerful way to connect. They in turn will share their stories, and then we can have the third conversation, about becoming a team. This team reaches out to people they know to talk about their concerns and priorities, building a broad base of supporters.. Then, with our base at our back, we can have that final conversation, directly confronting the powers that be. Of course, this isn't as simple as it sounds. Appropriately enough, Whitman uses stories, his own and others, to illustrate how best to handle these conversations and to show how they work together to build a movement. We can't just sit on the sidelines sharing angry social media posts or signing online petitions. We need to get directly involved, reach out, knock on doors, and bring our whole selves to the table if the changes our country so desperately need are ever going to come.
