Contiene notizie ignote a molti, pure a credenti; o meglio, conosciute in modo superficiale e distorto, il che è peggio: lo so perché per tanti anni ho tenuto conferenze sul vero Cristianesimo e colto ogni volta la meraviglia di molti presenti.Negli ultimi due millenni, accanto a innumerevoli casi di carità cristiana, tante cattiverie personali sono state commesse da membri della Chiesa, chierici e laici, e collettive, come guerre sante e roghi accesi con pari diligenza da cattolici e da protestanti, nemmeno che il Precetto fosse stato "Odierai il nemico" e Dio avesse considerato come suoi nemici personali gli avversari ideologici di quei fedeli. Pur se non fu minore il numero di atrocità compiute da non credenti e da membri di altre religioni, essendo essenziale messaggio cristiano l'Amore-Dio molti oggi rifiutano il Cristianesimo "incoerente" e "oscurantista": il male appare sùbito e resta nella memoria, il bene no. È una grandine di accuse alla "Chiesa", peraltro in parte ingiuste. Eppure, quanto sostanzialmente importa è: O Cristo è realmente esistito, morto e risorto e, dunque, ci ha salvati, oppure no. Se sì, ha sempre senso essere cristiani, anche se molti credenti usarono e usano la loro libertà per fare il male invece del bene; altrimenti, non ha mai avuto senso. Non è affatto una novità; già l'apostolo Paolo affermava nella I Lettera ai Corinzi, la quale è parte del Nuovo testamento e dunque, per i credenti, Parola di Dio, che senza reale Risurrezione non c'è Cristianesimo: "Se Cristo non è risuscitato, allora è inutile la nostra predicazione ed è vana anche la vostra fede" (1 Cor 15, 14); o, per dirla altrimenti, esso diventa una delle tante religioni che l'uomo ha immaginato, meramente consolatorie e utili all'ordine sociale. Per questo, con l'Illuminismo e il Positivismo, i critici del Cristianesimo avevano in primo luogo cercato di abbattere la realtà della Risurrezione e, parte di loro, la storicità stessa di Gesú. Su questa via s'era posto inoltre chi, sbagliando, aveva creduto di salvare il Cristianesimo dagli attacchi di quei razionalisti eliminando il Gesú storico e mantenendo solo un Cristo della fede. Questo mio lavoro riguarda due periodi storici, anche se non è diviso in due parti: il tempo di Gesú e della prima Chiesa e l'epoca che va dall'Illuminismo ad oggi, con le sue varie scuole di contestazione al Cristianesimo. Contempla, in un confronto con quei critici, la realtà storica, o meno, di Gesú e quella della predicazione apostolica sulla sua risurrezione; inoltre, la concreta formazione dei libri del Nuovo testamento, opere letterarie, non dettate dall'Alto, anche se, senza contraddizione come vedremo, ispirate da Dio, in un tempo, all'incirca tra gli anni 50 e 90, nel quale, almeno in parte, i testimoni oculari di Cristo risorto erano ancora vivi e attivi nella comunità cristiana. Ipotesi contraria, ancor oggi di moda, è che questi testi siano stati scritti molto tempo dopo, quando erano ormai morti da un pezzo i testimoni e smentite non erano più possibili. [...]

Eisenbichler sets forth a complex and original interpretation of the experiences of these three educated noblewomen and their contributions to contemporary culture in Siena by looking at the emergence of a new lyric tradition and the sonnets they exchanged among themselves and with their male contemporaries. Through the analysis of their poems and various book dedications to them, Eisenbichler reveals the intersection of poetry, politics, and sexuality, as well as the gendered dialogue that characterized Siena's literary environment during the late Renaissance. In this colorful portrayal of civic life in medieval Florence, Carol Lansing explores the patrilineal structure and function of these urban families, known as "magnates." She shows how they emerged as a class defined not by specific economic interests but by a distinctive culture. During the earlier period of weaker civic institutions, these families built their power by sharing among themselves crucial resources--forts, political alliances, ecclesiastical rights. Lansing examines this activity as well as the responses patrilineal strategies drew from women, who were excluded from inheritance and full lineage membership.
