Download or read book Valuable Flints written by Bjørn I. Smit and published by Barkhuis. This book was released on 2010 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the problems concerning the research of Stone Age surface scatters in the Northern Netherlands (provinces of Groningen, Drenthe and Friesland). Research methods are presented which can be used to assess these scatters within the realm of archaeological heritage management and suggestions are made with regard to knowledge hiatus and future research opportunities.Due to the large number of scatters, poor conservation, lack of visibility in the landscape and disturbed context these sites can often be overlooked. Nowadays, the majority of archaeological research is performed within the context of archaeological heritage management where, besides scientific, socio-economic motives also play a role. A major part of this book is focused on ways in which these scatters can be investigated within the context of archaeological heritage management. In this thesis the use of a landscape approach is advocated for an effective study of early prehistoric communities. This means that the intrinsic characteristics of the surface scatters should be supplemented with information on landforms and palaeo-ecological data from the surrounding areas. By using such an approach a more thorough image of Stone Age communities can be presented.

Book excerpt: KADOC Artes 10Based on the cultural insight that "historism"--understood as the projection of the past into the present by artistic means, or the "invention of tradition"--always occurs in close connection with the emergence of nation-states, this volume describes for the first time the cultural and denominational character and development of the Maas-Rhine region during the period between the French Revolution and World War I. Seventeen contributors shed light on the cultural identity of this Catholic-dominated core region of Europe.

Book Synopsis National Identity and Nineteenth-Century Franco-Belgian Sculpture by : Jana Wijnsouw
Download or read book National Identity and Nineteenth-Century Franco-Belgian Sculpture written by Jana Wijnsouw and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-27 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book elaborates on the social and cultural phenomenon of national schools during the nineteenth century, via the less studied field of sculpture and using Belgium as a case study. The role, importance of, and emphasis on certain aspects of national identity evolved throughout the century, while a diverse array of criteria were indicated by commissioners, art critics, or artists that supposedly constituted a "national sculpture." By confronting the role and impact of the four most crucial actors within the artistic field (politics, education, exhibitions, public commissions) with a linear timeframe, this book offers a chronological as well as a thematic approach. Artists covered include Guillaume Geefs, Eugène Simonis, Charles Van der Stappen, Julien Dillens, Paul Devigne, Constantin Meunier, and George Minne.

Book Synopsis The Power of the Pen by : Denise Merkle
Download or read book The Power of the Pen written by Denise Merkle and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2010 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary collection investigates the relations between translation and different forms and systems of censorship that were operating in nineteenth-century Europe. The volume presents and discusses broadly the research findings of translation studies scholars from a total of nine countries. Contributors have studied not only the apparati of power that enforce censorship but also the symbolic dimension that as well as being inherent to systems is also an explicit activity on the part of decision makers. The nineteenth century has been very neglected in studies of translation censorship to date. This volume addresses this gap in research, showing how discourse was filtered by official and unofficial censorship mechanisms against a background of massive political and technological change. The volume brings together eleven essays on censorship of literature, philosophy and the press in Austro-Hungary, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Portugal, Russia and Spain.
