Book Synopsis History and Religion by : Bernd-Christian Otto
Download or read book History and Religion written by Bernd-Christian Otto and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History is one of the most important cultural tools to make sense of one’s situation, to establish identity, define otherness, and explain change. This is the first systematic scholarly study that analyses the complex relationship between history and religion, taking into account religious groups both as producers of historical narratives as well as distinct topics of historiography. Coming from different disciplines, the authors of this volume ask under which conditions and with what consequences religions are historicised. How do religious groups employ historical narratives in the construction of their identities? What are the biases and elisions of current analytical and descriptive frames in the History of Religion? The volume aims at initiating a comparative historiography of religion and combines disciplinary competences of Religious Studies and the History of Religion, Confessional Theologies, History, History of Science, and Literary Studies. By applying literary comparison and historical contextualization to those texts that have been used as central documents for histories of individual religions, their historiographic themes, tools and strategies are analysed. The comparative approach addresses circum-Mediterranean and European as well as Asian religious traditions from the first millennium BCE to the present and deals with topics such as the origins of religious historiography, the practices of writing and the transformation of narratives.
Book Synopsis New Theologies of the Old Testament and History by : Petr Sláma
Download or read book New Theologies of the Old Testament and History written by Petr Sláma and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2017 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Old Testament theologies written in the last two centuries are scrutinized with special regard to their relation to history. History as a way of making sense and finding one's orientation out of the past is discussed. A distinction between emic (taken from within a literary work) and etic (taken from outside of a literary work) perspectives is suggested as an important criterion for understanding any Old Testament theology. Book Synopsis Iconoclasm and Iconoclash by : Willem van Asselt
Download or read book Iconoclasm and Iconoclash written by Willem van Asselt and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-09-30 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on iconoclastic controversies and, in particular, their impact on the creation of religious identities. In the history of Jewish, Christian and Muslim culture, religious identity was not only formed through historical claims, but also through the use of certain images: ‘images of God’, ‘images of the others’, and ‘images of the self.’ Moreover, in the struggle for religious identity these ‘images’ were time and again employed for the purpose of establishing distinct groups, both ortho- dox and deviant. At the same time, they supplied weapons in the theological debate and found explicit expression in certain rituals or liturgical traditions. These conference proceedings include a discussion of the role of images in society, politics, theology and liturgy, in particular addressing the ‘iconoclash’ of physical, mental and verbal images on the construction of religious identity.

Download or read book Sober, Strict, and Scriptural: Collective Memories of John Calvin, 1800-2000 written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-04-24 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calvinism’s influence and reputation have received ample scholarly attention. But how John Calvin himself – his person, character, and deeds – was remembered, commemorated, and memorialized, is a question few historians have addressed. Focussing on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, this volume aims to open up the subject with chapters on Calvin’s monumentalization in statues and museums, his appearance in novels, children’s books, and travel writing, his iconic function for Hungarian nationalists and Presbyterian missionaries to China, his reputation among Mormons and freethinkers, and his rivalry with Michael Servetus in French Protestant memory. The result is a fresh contribution to the field of religious memory studies and an invitation to further comparative research. Contributors include: R. Bryan Bademan, Patrick Cabanel, R. Scott Clark, Thomas J. Davis, Stephen S. Francis, Joe B. Fulton, Botond Gaál, Stefan Laube, Johan de Niet, Herman Paul, James Rigney, Michèle Sacquin, Jonathan Seitz, Robert Vosloo, Bart Wallet, and Valentine Zuber.

Book Synopsis Abraham Kuyper's Commentatio (1860): The Young Kuyper about Calvin, a Lasco, and the Church (2 vols.) by : Jasper Vree
Download or read book Abraham Kuyper's Commentatio (1860): The Young Kuyper about Calvin, a Lasco, and the Church (2 vols.) written by Jasper Vree and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-01-03 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Commentatio the 22-year-old Kuyper not only describes Calvin’s and a Lasco’s concepts of the Church, but also discusses them in the light of the Gospel. The Commentatio marks the beginning of modern a Lasco studies. The work also offers the initial impetus for the idea with which Kuyper would later exert great influence on Dutch nation and society: the Church as a free, democratic society of Christians, which manifests itself as a living organism in all spheres of life. The text, which has never been published before, is accompanied by historical and philological introductions, annotations, and comprehensive registers, and throws surprising new light on the origins of Kuyper’s ideas. Moreover, this source edition is important for the study of nineteenth-century Reformation research.
