Download or read book Triomf written by Marlene van Niekerk and published by Abacus. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the four inhabitants of 127 Martha Street in the poor white suburb of Triomf. Living on the ruins of old Sophiatown, the freehold township razed to the ground as a so-called 'black spot', they await with trepidation their country's first democratic elections. It is a date that coincides fatefully with the fortieth birthday of Lambert, the oversexed misfit son of the house. There is also Treppie, master of misrule and family metaphysician; Pop, the angel of peace teetering on the brink of the grave; and Mol, the materfamilias in her eternal housecoat. Pestered on a daily basis by nosy neighbours, National Party canvassers and Jehovah's Witnesses, defenceless against the big city towering over them like a vengeful dinosaur, they often resort to quoting to each other the only consolation that they know; we still have each other and a roof over our heads. TRIOMF relentlessly probes Afrikaner history and politics, revealing the bizarre and tragic effect that apartheid had on exactly the white underclass who were most supposed to benefit. It is also a seriously funny investigation of the human endeavour to make sense of life even under the most abject of circumstances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set during 1942-45 White’s Corner tells of a generation of youths, many of whose hopes and dreams were shattered by the War. Brenda, originally from Belfast, marries a Cardiff born sea-going deck officer, and settles in Hebburn, North East England, where they buy the very old South Eastern Hotel (Souie) in 1932. The Souie’s story is told, along with that of the factory the book takes its name from. The March 1944 National Apprentices’ Strike is covered (a serious action with a War on) which created schisms between apprentices that lasted until death in some cases. White’s Corner has many interesting characters, including the Kelly family – consisting of eight siblings, four of whom are White’s Marine Engineering Co apprentices. The sequel follows the lives of these characters after the War. The reader will laugh out loud at the accounts of apprenticeship escapades, and be moved by the many situations that arise. Every human emotion occurs within its tales.

Download or read book A Matter of Dark written by Gareth Wiles and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2013 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The government has legalised assisted dying, and one man is staging the ultimate reality TV show – where the audience get to help him on his way. As the clock ticks down, and those for and against the impending broadcast argue their case, we travel back in time to discover what lead Peter to this terrible point in his life. A list of unsolved murders, suicides and destroyed friendships have been left scattered wherever Peter has set foot. As we discover a family torn apart by his brief presence in their lives so many years ago, we also see the effect he’s had on one impressionable young man who sticks by him the whole time: Neville. Peter’s biggest fan, and wholehearted believer in the book Peter wrote, Neville treats his idol as a messianic figure. The two are their own worst enemies, finding themselves embarking on a murderous journey to the depths of depravity together with a host of other damaged souls. That one of them, OAP getaway driver Gerty, might finally redeem herself after a lifetime of crime, leaves hope for Peter himself...This gripping sequel to I Am Dead and Icon’s Request has been inspired by Joseph Conrad, Franz Kafka and Albert Kamus. Gareth also takes inspiration from TV shows like Doctor Who, The Saint and Danger Man. A Matter of Dark will appeal to fans of sci-fi/fantasy fiction who consider how fast the world is moving, both technologically and morally. We’re all naturally fearful of change – but need we be?
