Book excerpt: "Young singers through the centuries have occupied a central position in a variety of religious institutional settings: urban cathedrals, collegiate churches, monasteries, guilds, and confraternities." "The training of singers for performance in religious services shaped the very structures of ecclesiastical institutions, which developed to meet the need for educating their youngest members. The development of musical repertories and styles also directly reflected the ubiquitous participation of children's voices in both chant and polyphony. There was even, frequently, a future for choristers after their voices broke."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: The instructor guide for Wilko Brouwers' Gregorian chant instruction program for children. Twenty lessons to introduce Gregorian chant to children's choirs: music educator Wilko Brouwers has put together this program based on a lifetime of learning and reflection on the past century of music education. The result is nothing short of brilliant. The program is simple, short, and focused, leading children to sing chant one step at a time. Words with Wings is a gigantic breakthrough for the future of Catholic children's choirs. At last now, the parish will have a place to begin, a method for getting started, a goal in mind, and materials that pull all of this together. This is more than a work of cultural reconstruction, though it is that. This is about the future of art in the liturgy, which is to say, the future of art and faith. It has to begin with the young if it is going to really take root in Catholic life. But the usefulness goes beyond the Catholic parish. Since the ancient world, people have understood that music is an essential part of education. This simple and clear program of 20 lessons allows this wisdom to enjoy a new life within any educational context. This instructor guide is a perfect-bound softcover, 69 pages. The student workbook and the demonstration CD are also available, and supplementary material is available on-line.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: by Sister Mary Antonine Goodchild, O.P. What a wonderful find this is: an ideal textbook on chant for junior high, high school, or really any age. It is mercifully free of verbiage or exaggerated detail. It is short and completely clear on all aspects of learning to chant (notes, rhythm, Latin, style), and it contains a vast amount of the basic repertoire, in neumes and with English translations. It even has study questions! Many of us have wished that such a book would be written. It took Fr. Samuel Weber to point out that such a book already exists, and now, praise be to God, it is in print again. As the title says, it is the perfect text for Church and school. It came out in 1944 but it isn't in the slightest bit dated. This is priced for mass distribution.

Book excerpt: The practice of child oblation - donating one's child to a monastery - supplied many recruits to the Benedictine Order in the early Middle Ages. Oblates, received between the ages of five and seven, resided together in the monastery where special caretaker monks reared and educated them until they reached the age of profession at fifteen. In Better Than the Sons of Kings Patricia Quinn blends iconographic, literary, architectural and historical evidence to reveal the origins and day-to-day operation of monastic child rearing. Oblates' eight-to-ten childhood years of disciplina et custodia, Quinn argues, indelibly marked their behavior when adults, whether in the sphere of their intellectual pursuits, their social interactions, their political loyalties, or their view of the Order's role in the church and the world. Six hundred years of child oblation, Quinn maintains, lent stability and continuity to the Benedictines during a chaotic period of European history. The Order's retreat from the practice in the eleventh century had dramatic and far-reaching effects both within the Order itself and upon all of society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first major work on the history of the secular church in the Frankish states of Syria and the Holy Land - a subject which has not hitherto attracted the interest of ecclesiastical historians. The present book has been written to fill this important gap in crusader studies. It deals with the period stretching from the establishment of a Latin hierarchy after the First Crusade to the final conquest by the Mamluks in 1291. Dr Hamilton examines the development of the Church in the Patriarchates of Jerusalem and Antioch and its organisation from the parish level upwards. Two chapters are devoted to a study of its sources of income and the financial problems that arose after the Battle of Hattin through the thirteenth century. Particular attention is paid to the relations between the Latin and the Eastern Churches. The author documents the unequal treatment given to the Orthodox and to the separated Churches, and traces the course of the various attempts at church union. In his conclusion he makes an overall assessment of the spiritual achievments of the Church during this period and the extent to which it justified the first crusaders' ideals.
