Book Synopsis German Colonization Past And Future - The Truth About The German Colonies by : Heinrich Schnee
Download or read book German Colonization Past And Future - The Truth About The German Colonies written by Heinrich Schnee and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Heinrich Schnee was born in 1871 at Neuhaldensleben, near Magdeburg, and after passing through the Nordhausen Gymnasium studied at the universities of Heidelberg, Kiel, and Berlin, as well as the Oriental Seminary in Berlin, where he specialized in colonial administration and the Suaheli language, his intention being to follow a colonial career. In 1892 he passed his Referendary examination; in the following year he took his degree of Doctor of Laws; in 1897 he passed his examination as Government Assessor and joined the Colonial Department of the Foreign Office; in 1898 he was appointed Resident Magistrate and Deputy Governor in German New Guinea; and two years later he became District Administrator and Deputy-Governor in Samoa. 'German Colonization Past And Future' though now to us little more than a memory, its evil effects live after it, and the worst of these is that it has created a perplexing colonial problem which cannot by any possibility remain as it stands to-day. Accordingly, it is the purpose of the following narrative to show wherein Germany’s reputation and success as a colonial Power have been unjustly called in question, and to give reasons why the return to her of colonies is an act both of duty and of necessity.

Download or read book German Colonialism Revisited written by Nina Berman and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German Colonialism Revisited brings together military historians, art historians, literary scholars, cultural theorists, and linguists to address a range of issues surrounding colonized African, Asian, and Oceanic people’s creative reactions to and interactions with German colonialism. This scholarship sheds new light on local power dynamics; agency; and economic, cultural, and social networks that preceded and, as some now argue, ultimately structured German colonial rule. Going beyond issues of resistance, these essays present colonialism as a shared event from which both the colonized and the colonizers emerged changed.
Book Synopsis German Colonialism by : Volker Langbehn
Download or read book German Colonialism written by Volker Langbehn and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-12 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than half a century before the mass executions of the Holocaust, Germany devastated the peoples of southwestern Africa. While colonialism might seem marginal to German history, new scholarship compares these acts to Nazi practices on the Eastern and Western fronts. With some of the most important essays from the past five years exploring the "continuity thesis," this anthology debates the links between German colonialist activities and the behavior of Germany during World War II. Some contributors argue the country's domination of southwestern Africa gave rise to perceptions of racial difference and superiority at home, building upon a nascent nationalism that blossomed into National Socialism and the Holocaust. Others remain skeptical and challenge the continuity thesis. The contributors also examine Germany's colonial past with debates over the country's identity and history and compare its colonial crimes with other European ventures. Other issues explored include the denial or marginalization of German genocide and the place of colonialism and the Holocaust within German and Israeli postwar relations.
Book Synopsis Public Health and Colonialism by : Margrit Davies
Download or read book Public Health and Colonialism written by Margrit Davies and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2002 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up to now far too little has been known about the influence and the effect of European medicine in colonies and not much has been known as yet about the introduction and activity of medical doctors, and public health in general, in the colony of German New Guinea. The present study examines for the first time in detail the measures and goals of the German colonial administration in relation to issues of public health. The activities of medical practitioners, medical orderlies and nurses are examined, as are problems with endemic tropical and introduced diseases, the reaction of the native population to European health measures, the training of native men as "Heiltultuls" and the efficacy of their deployment, and the introduction of western standards of hygiene. Margrit Davies scrutinises the interplay of public health and colonialism and attempts an answer to the question of how the especifically German variety of "colonial medicine" is to be evaluated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Germany's short-lived colonial empire (1884-1918) was neither large nor successful, it is historically significant. The establishment of German colonies and attempts to expand them affected international politics in a period of extreme tension. Smith focuses on the interaction between Germany's colonial empire and German politics and, by extension, on the connection between colonialism and socioeconomic conflict in Germany before World War I.
