Book excerpt: Excerpt from Germantown Gardens and Gardeners Garden is an open place reserved for plants, and a gardener is a person who helps a plant to grow. Upon this broad interpretation we set out. Before venturing to cross an unsurveyed country, it will be well for a traveller to fix the view points, for otherwise he may wander far astray. We, in essaying a rapid journey through trackless fields, may not linger, but must onward press, keeping in sight the land-mark upon the objective hill. For direction and distinctness we have divided Our subject into three parts; the Formative period extending from 1683 to i740, -during which German Towne was founded, when it became a village with its houses and business confined to a Pike, its interests being largely agricultural - the period Of development, extending from 1740 to 18 54, - during which the village expanded to the measure of a town, wherein farms gave way to estates, when pretentious gardens were prepared, and professional gardeners appeared; - and the modern period, extending from the year 18 54 to the year 191 I, - during which marked changes were made, elaborate gardens ourished, and wherein Germantown became an integral part Of the great city Of Philadelphia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four Seasons in the Garden Cess. The first thing to do is to grade the ground evenly. Most persons prefer a lawn that slopes away from house to road in an almost imperceptible incline of surface. Such a lawn is easier to make than a level one, be cause any little departure from a perfectly even surface Will be far less noticeable. To secure the necessary slope, ea1'th will have to be filled in near the house if the lot 18 a comparatively level one. Wherever there has been an exca vation made for the house-walls or a cellar, there Will generally be enough earth near the house to furnish all the filling needed in making the required slope. This soil, Which is almost always hard, should be worked over until it is as fine and mellow as possible, for a good lawn cannot be made from a coarse and lumpy soil. If the soil is not rich, it should be made so. I would advise the use of bone-meal in liberal quantity in preference to barn-yard fertilizer, because it never introduces the seeds of weeds into the lawn, as manure from the stables is very sure to do. Coarse bone-meal, in the pro portion of a half pound to each square yard. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Town Window Gardening I'll take the showers as they fall, I will not vex my bosom Enough if at the end of all A little garden blossom. Courage is wanted to write a book about Town-garden ing. Is there such a thing? Some would say No; cats, fogs, and smuts forbid. Yet how inseparable from London is the thought of flowers I Can we picture the West End on a summer's day without them The dust laid, freshly sprinkled squares and streets, where behind half-drawn blinds there is the fragrance of many blossoms the bright harness of horses jangling as they champ the bit, a knot of flowers at every bridle, flower-sellers with baskets at all convenient corners, and along the roadway carts Of Palms and growing plants bending and waving in the wind, every man one meets has got his button-hole, and every maiden wears her posy even the butcher-boy holds a bud between his thumb and finger, twirling it and smelling at it as he goes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Garden Decorative Everyone will allow that the beauty of the garden is not dependent wholly on the flowers that happen to be blooming within it. Over and above these there must be that fine sense of repose, and of harmony, without which no garden, strictly speaking, can be accounted really beautiful and satisfying. It is the lack of these qualities that makes a garden commonplace and uninteresting. Books have been written to teach us how to look at pictures, and how to listen to music. I wonder if the day will come that shall produce the volume which shall tell us hew to enjoy the beauties of gardens? Certain it is the majority of people do not recognise, and, therefore, do not enjoy, these beauties as they might. I have said that a garden to be really beautiful must impress us with a sense of repose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
