At Gerbeviller, in the Department of the meurthe-ci-mo selle, on the 24th August, about 60 french chasseurs a pied, after heroically withstanding the attack of the German troops, retired. The Germans rushed into the town, pillaged, burn ed and massacred. More than 100 people disappeared from Gerbeviller during the day. At least 50 were massacred. Fifteen bodies found with their hands tied behind their backs were buried by their fellow citizens at a place called La Prele which had been chosen by the Germans as an execu tion ground. Other victims were killed in the houses and in the streets. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from "Frightfulness" In Theory and Practice, as Compared With Franco-British War Usages Yet the rules of warfare professed, and still more those observed by Germany, differ very greatly, very painfully, from those Observed and professed by her adversaries. The explanation of this fact is simply that Germany vitiates all her rules of warfare by her exceptions. Rules are made to be kept by others; and by oneself, except in case of necessity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the spring of 1945, the Second World War was drawing to a close in Europe. Allied troops were sweeping through Nazi Germany and discovering the atrocities of SS concentration camps. The first to be reached intact was Buchenwald, in central Germany. American soldiers struggled to make sense of the shocking scenes they witnessed inside. They asked a small group of former inmates to draft a report on the camp. It was led by Eugen Kogon, a German political prisoner who had been an inmate since 1939. The Theory and Practice of Hell is his classic account of life inside. Unlike many other books by survivors who published immediately after the war, The Theory and Practice of Hell is more than a personal account. It is a horrific examination of life and death inside a Nazi concentration camp, a brutal world of a state within state, and a society without law. But Kogon maintains a dispassionate and critical perspective. He tries to understand how the camp works, to uncover its structure and social organization. He knew that the book would shock some readers and provide others with gruesome fascination. But he firmly believed that he had to show the camp in honest, unflinching detail. The result is a unique historical document—a complete picture of the society, morality, and politics that fueled the systematic torture of six million human beings. For many years, The Theory and Practice of Hell remained the seminal work on the concentration camps, particularly in Germany. Reissued with an introduction by Nikolaus Waschmann, a leading Holocaust scholar and author of Hilter's Prisons, this important work now demands to be re-read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Is at Stake in the War One fact has already become abundantly clear since those words were uttered - that whereas the victory of the Central Powers means an absolute German hegemony over enemies and allies alike, the victory of the Entente will be the joint work Of an ever-expanding group of Powers. While Germany, if she wins, will justly regard herself as having saved austria-hungary from destruction, not one of her rivals, in the event of the triumph of the Entente, will be able to claim a monopoly of the credit. Each will have contributed to the common cause, but in each case that contribution will have been an indispensable part of the total effort. Here at least it is possible to find some consolation. The victory of William II would be a victory for the spirit which inspired Louis XIV or the first Napoleon, a reversion to the vanishing era of insolent conquest and plunder. The victory of the Allies will be a victory for Europe and the European system. What might have been a mere war for French or British or Russian Imperialism, has thus become a con ict in which all good Europeans to say nothing of Americans, are ranged against a single renegade foe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2005 book explores the evolution of Americans' first way of war, to show how war waged against Indian noncombatant population and agricultural resources became the method early Americans employed and, ultimately, defined their military heritage. The sanguinary story of the American conquest of the Indian peoples east of the Mississippi River helps demonstrate how early Americans embraced warfare shaped by extravagant violence and focused on conquest. Grenier provides a major revision in understanding the place of warfare directed on noncombatants in the American military tradition, and his conclusions are relevant to understand US 'special operations' in the War on Terror.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rifle Training for War It is the purpose of this publication to treat only of individual training, and it will begin with a dis cussion of its theory and relative importance. Before the war there grew up a theory, based largely upon German precept if not propaganda, to the effect that individual rifle training was unimportant if not a military detriment. It was variously stated that Expert riflemen will not make as many hits in war as will average shots that Individual instruction should not be given at ranges greater than 500 yards that Such training as the soldier receives on the target range plays but a minor part; that At 900 yards poor marksmen will obtain 10 times as many' hits as good marksmen; that When the range is unknown the superior skill of the excellent marksman works to his positive disadvantage; and that, firing in modern battle, is Often conducted at ranges of yards or even more. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Iraq to Bosnia to North Korea, the first question in American foreign policy debates is increasingly: Can air power alone do the job? Robert A. Pape provides a systematic answer. Analyzing the results of over thirty air campaigns, including a detailed reconstruction of the Gulf War, he argues that the key to success is attacking the enemy's military strategy, not its economy, people, or leaders. Coercive air power can succeed, but not as cheaply as air enthusiasts would like to believe.Pape examines the air raids on Germany, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq as well as those of Israel versus Egypt, providing details of bombing and governmental decision making. His detailed narratives of the strategic effectiveness of bombing range from the classical cases of World War II to an extraordinary reconstruction of airpower use in the Gulf War, based on recently declassified documents. In this now-classic work of the theory and practice of airpower and its political effects, Robert A. Pape helps military strategists and policy makers judge the purpose of various air strategies, and helps general readers understand the policy debates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines US Army Special Forces efforts to mobilize and train indigenous minorities in Vietnam. Christopher K. Ives shows how before the Second Indochina War, the Republic of Vietnam had begun to falter under the burden of an increasingly successful insurgency. The dominant American military culture could not conform to President Kennedy’s guidance to wage 'small wars', while President Diem’s provincial and military structures provided neither assistance nor security. The Green Berets developed and executed effective counterinsurgency tactics and operations with strategic implications while living, training, and finally fighting with the Montagnard peoples in the Central Highlands. Special Forces soldiers developed and executed what needed to be done to mobilize indigenous minorities, having assessed what needed to be known. Combining Clausewitz, business theory and strategic insight, this book provides an important starting point for thinking about how the US military should be approaching the problems of today's ‘small wars’. US Special Forces and Counterinsurgency in Vietnam will be of much interest to students of the Vietnam War, Special Forces operations, military innovation and strategic theory in general.

Book excerpt: How does coding change the way we think about architecture? This question opens up an important research perspective. In this book, Miro Roman and his AI Alice_ch3n81 develop a playful scenario in which they propose coding as the new literacy of information. They convey knowledge in the form of a project model that links the fields of architecture and information through two interwoven narrative strands in an “infinite flow” of real books. Focusing on the intersection of information technology and architectural formulation, the authors create an evolving intellectual reflection on digital architecture and computer science.
