Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Roche, Vol. 3 of 3: A Romance, From the German He offered her his arm, and with sentiments completely in unison, they proceeded to this im portant interview, which' was to decide upon the happiness of two beings whose own feelings on the subject were never taken into consideration. In fact, no doubt ever crossed the mind of the 'count d'aubaine, after what he-had heard, as to the only course which he considered that he could with propriety adopt; for although we must in justice bear witness to his having been the best of men and of fathers, yet it was not possible that he should be' so completely free from the prejudices of the age in which he lived, as to imagine that personal merit could possibly be considered as an equivalent for the difference of birth. He felt angry at the mistake he had made in placing the young man on so intimate a footing in his house, without more minute inquiry as to his position, and, with paternal tenderness, only thought of lightening the burden of shame which be doubted not Francoise would feel, on learning how nu worthy was the object whom she had suffered to gain an influence over her affections. In order, however, to give his wife, who was not prepared, a hint for the guidance of her own conduct, after the first salutations, he 'began by entreating her to join him in setting the mind of' the maréchale at rest concerning the companion of the young Count de Crecy, relating to her at the same time the humiliating account which the maréchale had just given of him. "Plunged in a languageless foreboding, Leaving his comrades far behind, Into that lonely land he hurried, And prick'd through forests drear and blind, In thoughts of woe and vengeance buried. - And prompting aye his soul to ill, A demon voice around him flutter'd, 'My sword shall burst that bar - I'll kill!' - Ever that dark Knight inly mutter'd. Book excerpt: The extensive scope of this collection means that this documentary record of the reception of German literature in England is a valuable scholarly resource. One of the most important features of British literary and intellectual history over the past 250 years is the influence of German literature. From the second half of the 18th Century, through the first decades of the 19th, German books and ideas attracted, then gained the attention of a nation. Despite the acknowledged importance of the influence on writers such as Coleridge and Carlyle the subject, though often alluded to, was rarely studied. This collection provides a guidebook through the masses of periodical and allows the English side of the Anglo-German literary relationship to be explored in detail. In order to make the collection useful to scholars with a wide range of interest, it has been divided into three parts: Part 1 is a chronological presentation of commentary on German literature in general. It also contains collective reviews of multiple German authors, notices of important anthologies and reactions to influential works about Germany and its culture. Part 2 collects reviews of 18th Century individual German authors and Part 3 is devoted to the English reception of Goethe and Schiller. Parts 2 & 3 contain cross-references to the collective reviews of Part 1. Containing over 200 British serials and articles and reviews from all the major English literary periodicals, the collection also includes a broad sampling of opinion from the more general magazines, including some popular religious publications.

To report the conversation, which by your desire I have had with Dupre. Alme. Has he told you what are my father's intentions? - for he alone is acquainted with every secret. Dub. True, sir. I know no servant, who is on so confidential a footing with his master. Alme. Well? Dub. I have obeyed your orders, sir, and have learnt every thing. Alme. - (Hastily.) - Doubtless my father - Dub. Honest Dupre is not easily prevailed upon to be communicative. Alme. That is immaterial. Tell me only - Dub. Besides, he is always so melancholy, that one might almost fancy he had a bad conscience. Alme. Dupre! - Impossible! - He is one of the most honest men on earth. So old a servant of my father! - But to the point - I insist upon it. Dub. Well, sir - last night, when all was quiet in the house, I went to Dupre under the pretext of wanting to light my candle. Of course we entered into conversation - so I slily adverted to your father's intentions respecting you, and learnt that your suspicions were unfortunately just, - that preparations are already making for your union with the Count d'Harancour's daughter. Alme. Heavens! Dub. The lady is not handsome, certainly, but she is the only daughter of the oldest nobleman in Toulouse - a man of the first consequence, who can give her an enormous furtune. Alme. What are to me his riches and his rank? - Would not one look from Clementina overbalance them? Dub. Miss Clementina is a most lovely creature, I allow, sir, but I would, nevertheless, advise you to abandon every idea of marrying her. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Magic Ring, Vol. 1 of 3: A Romance, From the German of Frederick Baron De La Motte Fouque Such are the materials whence Fouque has drawn the machinery of his romances. The white magic of the now converted Druda contends against the black machinations of the infidel Gerda; and as for the Mysterious Ring, it seems to have been only one among other necro mantic spells, though some readers have sup posed that the author hereby intended to allego rize the delusive Spirit of the World, and of the worldly-minded, in opposition to that of pure religion and heavenly affections. Hence the Baron has represented the people of the North as led astray to wage war against all nations and against each other; till at last, by the infin ence of Bertha, (a personification of the true Christian faith) they become harmonized and happily united into one community. Nothing, you added, can be clearer and more intelligible than this outline; and, if the work were even literally rendered into English, it would present an excellent knightly tale of the olden time, ' with a religio-historical moral. Let this be done, and there need be no doubt entertained of its success. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: 'INSIDE THE THIRD REICH is not only the most significant personal German account to come out of the war but the most revealing document on the Hitler phenomenon yet written. It takes the reader inside Nazi Germany on four different levels: Hitler's inner circle, National Socialism as a whole, the area of wartime production and the inner struggle of Albert Speer. The author does not try to make excuses, even by implication, and is unrelenting toward himself and his associates... Speer's full-length portrait of Hitler has unnerving reality. The Fuhrer emerges as neither an incompetent nor a carpet-gnawing madman but as an evil genius of warped conceits endowed with an ineffable personal magic' NEW YORK TIMES
