If we were to suggest a start ing place for reading it would probably be the summation --it at tempts to place the various papers and discussions into a general context and to point out relevant ideas of current knowledge and of potentially useful avenues for further research. The papers and discussions deal more specifically with the indiviaual topics. It is hoped that the tone and tenor of the meeting are some what reflected in its proceedings. The emphasis today in biological research is quite "ecumenical" in outlook in that often techniques and conclusions from one discipline have relevance and applicability to another. For example, the elucidation of the DNA synthetic stage during interphase was first accomplished with botanical material; this technique has since had a broad and significant role in medical research. Also, the pioneering and now classical studies regarding the effects of ionizing radiation on plant chromosomes were, and still are, the foundation for studying mammalian chromosomes: it re quired only the discovery of a hypotonic medium to achieve spreading of them so that similar types of analyses were possible. Plants and plant cells have many unique features which allow them to be useful either for the study of specific botanical problems, or for studying broad biological principles.

The result ing spread of information is documented both in the society's Newsletter, and by the publication of volumes such as this, the record of the 9th Symposium held at Brighton in 1971. This meeting was a joint Symposium of the ISCERG and the International Union of Physiological Sciences. The subjects covered represent merely the interests of the organisers. The biophysical studies are represented by chapters on such divers topics as the x-ray diffraction of receptor membranes and impedance properties of outer limb suspensions. Other papers deal with the problems of maintaining the retina in vitro in a physiological condition. Papers describing techniques for investigating the functional properties of the visual system shade into those which describe new aspects of human disease. In the past such serendipity has been of value as evidenced by compal-ison between this and previous volumes. In 1965 the physiological section of the Proceedings was largely devoted to a new elec trical response, the evoked potential of the visual cortex.

The remainder of the proceedings, dealing with the epide miologic, clinical and preventive aspects of arteriosclerosis, will be published in a second volume. The Conference was held under the auspices of the International Society of Cardiology, the International Cardiology Foundation and the European Atherosclerosis Group. The aim of the Conference was to achieve a synthesis of present knowledge concerning arterioscle rosis. Therefore, workers were brought together from several coun tries and from various disciplines that do not ordinarily intercom municate for free exchange of data and ideas. Six broad subject areas were introduced by single papers; three of them are included in this volume. In the discussion which followed each formal pres entation, the participants attempted to reconcile disparate data and interpretations and to reach .a clear identification of important areas of ignorance and of crucial questions for future research. The format of the proceedings does not follow precisely that of the Conference itself. The formal papers are included, somewhat ab breviated, and excerpts of the discussion have been gathered under a series of topics arranged in logical sequence. Therefore, the quoted statements do not necessarily appear in order or in the place in the program where they were made. Principal issues, syntheses and unanswered questions are interspersed among the topics as edi torial comments.

Book excerpt: This volume represents a portion of the Proceedings of the Sixth International Meeting of the Reticuloendothelial Society. There is little question that the University of Freiburg was a most appropriate choice as the site of the meeting since, in essence, the Society was founded here when Aschoff undertook his classical studies on the macrophage and discovered what may well have been the last remaining biological system. In the approximate fifty years which have elapsed since Aschoff introduced the descriptive term Reticuloendothelial System to unify those cells with the common property of phagocytosis, one finds investigative activity at the highest level in all areas of reticuloendothelial involvement. Indeed, the topics covered in the present volume would of necessity require that the common property of phagocytosis which led to the formulation of the reticuloendothelial system be modified. The common basis at the present is clearly no longer phagocytic expression, but the unifying basis of host defense. The totality of reticuloendothelial involvement in host-defense is clearly reflected by the diverse scientific backgrounds and research interests of the participants of the meeting. Remarkable advances in appreciating the involvement of the RES in maintaining the well-being of the host against a variety of endogenous and exogenous factors have been made since volume I of the Advances in Experimental Biology and Medicine on the reticulo endothelial system was published.

It is only recently, however, that great progress has been made in the understanding of the processes involved in purine metabolism and its disorders in man. The key enzymes active in the various pathways of purine synthesis and degradation have become known and their properties are the subject of intensive study. Major contributions to the knowledge of normal purine metabolism in man have derived from the study of inborn errors in patients with purine disorders, specifically complete and partial hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase deficiency. Mutations of other enzymes involved in purine metabolism are being discovered. A great step forward has been made in the treatment of gout with the introduction of uricosuric drugs and more recently of the hypoxanthine analogue allopurinol, a synthetic xanthine oxidase inhibitor. Furthermore, the complex nature of the renal handling of urie acid excretion, although still posing difficult problems, appears to approach clari fication.

Book excerpt: This text contains the scientific contributions to the Fourth International Symposium on Sphingolipids, Sphingo lipidoses and Allied Disorders held at the Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center on October 25-27, 1971. These meetings were conducted under the auspices of the Isaac Albert Research Institute of the Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center and the National Tay-Sachs and Allied Diseases Association, Inc. Four symposia, held in 1958, 1961, 1965 and 1971 were designed to gather the most relevant and innovative of the laboratory and field studies concerned with these hereditary disorders. The texts generated by these periodic meetings have mirrored the increasing absorption of the scientific community in the problems of sphingolipid metabolism. The first meeting in 1958 consisted of but twelve pre sentations, the majority emanating from local laboratories. The current sessions contain 48 scientific presentations by scientists from nine countries and demonstrate the increas ingly diversified techniques and approaches employed in the study of these diseases. Many of the authors, in exploring data on the mucopolysaccharidoses and leucodystrophies, as well as the sphingolipidoses, have given recognition to those biochemical areas held in common by these otherwise diverse disease processes. The problems of prevention and therapy of these diseases have been considered by some of the contributors. Laboratory screening procedures designed to detect carriers of the va rious lipidoses are now available and the experiences of some laboratories in this area are summarized within this volume. The prospective identification of heterozygotes may indeed become a powerful adjunct in genetic counseling.

It was thus with some reser vations when the individuals participating in this conference accepted the invitation to attend a small gathering to discuss the "Comparative Pathophysiology of Circulatory Disturbances", held over three days in November, 1971. At the end of it they had changed their minds and were enthusiastic over the wisdom to hold meetingsof this kind. The conference was conceived some years earlier when it was apparent to the conveners that little opportunity exists in the common mammoth meetings to exchange detailed information and, p- haps more importantly, to transmit points of view between scientists of different disciplines. In particular, the voice of veterinarians and comparative biologists is not often heard by medical investigators, and vice versa. Thus, many animal models exist in nature whose investigative exploitation might make important contributions to an understanding of human disease, yet they are unknown to medical scientists. Conversely, veterinarians are often not aware of the needs of such models and their recognition is often delayed unduly. This conference, attended by investigators of various back grounds was called to help correct these deficiencies, at least in a small segment of study, that concerned with circulatory pathophysiology.

The Foundation, through the kindness of its President, Dr. Robert L. Kroc, provided us with luxurious accommodations, excellent meeting facilities and an atmosphere extremely conducive to the exchange of scientific knowledge, both formally and informally. In addition, the Founda tion assisted financially in the travel expenses of three of our foreign guests and in the preparation of the manuscripts for this book. Yet, learning and education per se rank high in our set of values, from the point of view of both lay people and profes sional workers. For some reason, we fail to detect the illogic inherent in this value system--for, what is research but the learning of new information? Apparently our society associates "learning" only with known, long-gathered information. This symposium, I believe, will generate new information about shock through the integration of knowledge of many investi gators, who have come to share a common meeting ground. Hopefully, the worth of this and similar endeavors will gain the recognition and, more important, the support of the public. In the next decade or so, I believe that shock research workers will be channeling their efforts more and more into investigating the repair of damaged cells. The individual cell and its products must be scrutinized just as carefully as we examine the whole organism or its collections of cells. Shock is an exciting area of research, but it involves years of painstaking work. Moreover, the society which will reap its fruits must be persuaded to share the burden of its support. John A. The development of the central nervous system is possibly the most significant aspect of the growth of a mammal from embryo to adulthood. The central nervous system is obviously the main repository not only of the species' inherited functional characteristics but also of the process of individuation. Whatever "engrams" constitute the basis of individual characteristics are laid down mainly in the central nervous system, and especially the brain, during its growth. The chemical aspect of this process IS clearly of great importance and the significance of its study should be self evident. Nevertheless, it is only one aspect of a parel lei series of morphological, physiological, biochemical and psychological events which take place as an integrated process, the final result of which is the transformation of the post-embryonic nervous system into the functioning adult system. It is imperative, therefore, that any study or description of the chemical events during the development of the CNS should be undertaken in ful I awareness of the concomitant morphological, physiological and psychological events. It is only against this multidiscipl inary informational framework that the chemical events during 2 J. FOLCH-PI development can be correctly interpreted and acquire their ful I significance. With this in mind, the introduction to this volume may best serve its purpose by describing briefly the morphological and physiological events that accompany the chemical aspect of development.
