Book excerpt: This volume is intended to provide an up-to-date overview of the approaches, methodologies and techniques devoted to better understand-ing of the weathering conditions of rock masses on slopes. According to the local conditions, a variety of slope movements may take place and involve weathered rock masses. Shallow and rapid soil slips evolving to debris flows are probably the most common type of slope movement. At the same time, deep-seated, intermittent landslides can also affect large volumes of weathered rocks and soils. Despite the high frequency of landslides in weathered materials, and the damage and casualties they repeatedly cause, little is known about the relationship between weathering and slope move-ments. This book presents worldwide case studies, where a variety of geo-logical and geomorphological settings are discussed. The content is divided into three sections: the first is devoted to broad aspects of the weathering/landslide processes; the second and third sections include papers dealing with igneous/metamorphic and sedimentary weathered rocks, respec-tively.

FHWA-7-3-0001, performed the geologic tasks required by the contract. The portion of the project reported in this interim report is part of Phase I requiring documentation of features and conditions which influence stability of natural and man made slopes in earth materials. The features and conditions described include discrete primary and secondary features or discontinuities such as bedding surfaces, joints, and foliations as well as less distinct anisotropies in an otherwise physically uniform mass. Discussion of secondary factors contributing to slope instability such as rainfall, slope steepness and aspect, and vegetation also is included.

Experience, Theory and Practice contains the invited lectures and all papers presented at the 12th International Symposium on Landslides, (Naples, Italy, 12-19 June 2016). The book aims to emphasize the relationship between landslides and other natural hazards. Hence, three of the main sessions focus on Volcanic-induced landslides, Earthquake-induced landslides and Weather-induced landslides respectively, while the fourth main session deals with Human-induced landslides. Some papers presented in a special session devoted to "Subareal and submarine landslide processes and hazard” and in a “Young Session” complete the books. Landslides and Engineered Slopes. Experience, Theory and Practice underlines the importance of the classic approach of modern science, which moves from experience to theory, as the basic instrument to study landslides. Experience is the key to understand the natural phenomena focusing on all the factors that play a major role. Theory is the instrument to manage the data provided by experience following a mathematical approach; this allows not only to clarify the nature and the deep causes of phenomena but mostly, to predict future and, if required, manage similar events. Practical benefits from the results of theory to protect people and man-made works. Landslides and Engineered Slopes. Experience, Theory and Practice is useful to scientists and practitioners working in the areas of rock and soil mechanics, geotechnical engineering, engineering geology and geology.

Book excerpt: Rock Mechanics and Engineering: Prediction and Control of Landslides and Geological Disasters presents the state-of-the-art in monitoring and forecasting geotechnical hazards during the survey and design, construction, and operation of a railway. This volume offers the latest research and practical knowledge on the regularity of disaster-causing activities, and the monitoring and forecasting of rockfalls, landslides, and debris flow induced by rainfall and human activity. The book gives guidance on how to optimize railway design, prevent and control measures during construction, and geological hazard remediation. The book also advises engineers on how to achieve traffic safety on high-speed railways. Eleven chapters present best practices in the prediction and control of landslides and rockfalls in geological disasters, derived from years of geotechnical engineering research and practice on high-speed railways in China. High-speed railways bring characteristic geotechnical challenges including a complete maintenance system, a long railway line, and the subjection of the geological body to cyclic loads. Since the damage to the geological body is influenced by fatigue as well as rock and soil strength and hydrology, the study of geotechnical hazards to high-speed rail is very complex. Monitoring and predicting such hazards on high-speed railways is a significant challenge to their safe construction and operation. - Presents the latest technical achievement and development trends in landslide and rockfall forecasting - Considers the challenges of high-speed railways to the prediction and control of geotechnical hazards - Gives both in-situ and laboratory tests for rockfalls, and considers the collapse process of rock slopes - Describes the principles of slope monitoring with specific reference to high-speed rail - Details an automatic monitoring system for geotechnical hazards to high-speed rail
