Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of this book, Anzor Erkomaishvili, is one of the most well known, recognized individuals in Georgia: a singer and choirmaster; a composer and performer; one who seeks out and publishes unique recordings scattered in the archives of various countries; the founder of the world famous Rustavi Ensemble; and a steadfast director for half a century...This ensemble has held up to 6,000 concerts in 80 countries and has recorded more than 900 folk songs and released them on CD. These tour impressions have not been depicted in any of Anzor Erkomaishvili's books. This ensemble receives ovations in world famous concert halls. Volumes of books are filled with the impressions of audience members enraptured by what they have heard."The talent and expertise revealed by the singers, dancers, and instrumentalists of the Rustavi Ensemble evoke delight," the New York Times wrote (April 7, 1991) following a concert at the Beacon Theater on Broadway. It is possible to say that these writings by Anzor Erkomaishvili can be considered his "selected works". The book consists of eight chapters. The first chapter is titled "At the Origins". Here the author tells us about his ancestors and the search for Georgian recordings scattered about in foreign archives. The second chapter is "On Tour". Here two countries are singled out from a gigantic tour map: France and the United States of America."Unforgettable Encounters" is the third chapter. This chapter describes meetings with intriguing people. The fourth chapter is "A Man's Fate". Here you will read some essays permeated with special artistic expressions and emotions."Mysterious Voices" is the fifth chapter. Here the reader will get acquainted with some impressionable portraits of unique performers of Georgian folk singing. The sixth chapter is "Precious Silhouettes". Some interesting essays introduce readers to distinguished Georgian composers and opera singers."To Save Singing" is the title of the seventh chapter. The author's credo is disclosed in this chapter: "If we want to save folk singing, we must teach it to children and make them fall in love with it." The way this credo became embodied within the creation of the Martve Children's Ensemble and its great success is discussed. The last chapter is titled "Reflections". Here are some thoughts the richly creative biographer has jotted down at various times. These are statements imbued with a humility characteristic of Erkomaishvili and expressed with the excellence and laconic forms that Jorje Luis Borges demanded from this genre.

Download or read book Country Music written by Dayton Duncan and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rich and colorful story of America's most popular music and the singers and songwriters who captivated, entertained, and consoled listeners throughout the twentieth century--based on the upcoming eight-part film series to air on PBS in September 2019 This gorgeously illustrated and hugely entertaining history begins where country music itself emerged: the American South, where people sang to themselves and to their families at home and in church, and where they danced to fiddle tunes on Saturday nights. With the birth of radio in the 1920s, the songs moved from small towns, mountain hollers, and the wide-open West to become the music of an entire nation--a diverse range of sounds and styles from honky tonk to gospel to bluegrass to rockabilly, leading up through the decades to the music's massive commercial success today. But above all, Country Music is the story of the musicians. Here is Hank Williams's tragic honky tonk life, Dolly Parton rising to fame from a dirt-poor childhood, and Loretta Lynn turning her experiences into songs that spoke to women everywhere. Here too are interviews with the genre's biggest stars, including the likes of Merle Haggard to Garth Brooks to Rosanne Cash. Rife with rare photographs and endlessly fascinating anecdotes, the stories in this sweeping yet intimate history will captivate longtime country fans and introduce new listeners to an extraordinary body of music that lies at the very center of the American experience.
Book Synopsis The Geography of Georgia by : Igor V. Bondyrev
Download or read book The Geography of Georgia written by Igor V. Bondyrev and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-18 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the political and economic history and geography of Georgia, the problems it has faced, and how it has overcome and is still overcoming them. In most countries, at the end of the 20th century the successful resolution of social-economic, political, demographic and ecological problems was largely dependent on effectively protecting the population and economic assets from natural disasters and on ensuring conditions for their sustainable development. These problems are most acute in mountainous regions like Georgia, where the unplanned development of natural ecosystems has had drastic consequences. It is therefore necessary to understand not only the probability of changing conditions (natural as well as political and demographic), but also the probability of the resulting economic losses. The book is divided into four sections; historical and political geography, geological processes, ecological processes and developmental geography. In the historical and political geography section the authors present a detailed discussion on ancient history, historical and political geography, ethnic groups and religions, demographics and socio-cultural geography. The geological processes section contains information on geology, geodynamical processes, glacial and periglacial processes. The ecological processes section examines a variety of landscapes and ecosystems, aspects of deforestation, reforestation and desertification along with anthropogenic impacts on the environment. The developmental geography section looks at different economies, natural resources, sustainable development and climate change.

Book Synopsis Bound for Shady Grove by : Steven Harvey
Download or read book Bound for Shady Grove written by Steven Harvey and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Bound for Shady Grove, essayist Steven Harvey celebrates the spirit of the music of his adopted home in the southern Appalachian mountains. There, at the wellspring of mountain music, he took up his guitar and assumed the journey that culminated in this book. Harvey's essays measure out in words the four seasons of a life in music. Springtime pieces describe playing music in the log house of friends born and raised in the mountains or entering a banjo contest and losing with style. There are essays about fiddles and the devil, homemade instruments and homemade weapons, and a trip to England to trace mountain songs back to their elusive sources. As the book progresses into winter, the mood darkens, with pieces exploring the connection between music and resentment, loss, and death. Descriptions of music, hills, and people blend into a rich harmony as Harvey explores where music has taken him--where, in fact, music can take any of us.
