Although significant efforts are being made to improve the life-time of metallic assets in the soil environment, failures continue to occur due to deterioration brought about by external corrosion. Pipelines are one such category of buried assets. As part of urban management strategies, emphasis is placed on maintaining and extending the life of these assets. Consequently, knowledge on the corrosivity of the environment in which these pipelines are embedded is considered essential. For this purpose a range of assessment methods are available, which can be conducted on either laboratory soil samples, or in-situ conditions. However, with increase in costs associated with premature failures as well as maintenance, there is an interest to deepen the scientific understanding of the pipeline corrosion phenomenon and improve existing life-time prediction models. In this regard, the present thesis has attempted to contribute to different aspects of the soil corrosion discipline, through a mixture of intensive laboratory as well as geophysical field study. For the first time a galvanostatic pulse technique has been successfully applied to evaluate the electrical double layer properties at the metal/soil interface as well as to determine other corrosion related parameters. This has been conducted for synthetic soil samples in order to allow control over a multitude of variables. The choice of this technique is based on its ability to isolate bulk resistances from corrosion related process, as well as its ability to identify possible effects from soil capacitances. An important outcome of this study is that an experimental procedure is given, which allows consistent treatment of soils of various grain size distributions. Secondly, another detailed laboratory study has been conducted in order to illustrate the importance of integrating spectral induced polarization methods as part of normal assessment methods for identification of potentially corrosive soils. Synthetic soil samples from the aforementioned corrosion study were analyzed for their spectral responses in the frequency range 0.1 - 1000 Hz. Further information was extracted by fitting the acquired data using the Cole-Cole model. Overall it is shown that, apart from soil resistivities, the normalized chargeability parameter correlates with the polarization resistance, an important corrosion related parameter, when the soil physical properties manifest in the corrosion process. New ways of identifying potentially corrosive soils are also presented. This effectively extends the use of electrical characterizations for assessing soil corrosivity. Following these detailed laboratory studies, a field study is reported. Here, for the first time, the combined direct current resistivity and time-domain induced polarization (DC-TDIP) profiling methods are used to assess site conditions along a pipeline right-of-way. Additional insights on the field results are provided by laboratory analysis of soil samples acquired systematically along the pipeline right-of-way from depths near to the buried pipeline. Following this, a methodological framework is suggested to assist in developing further capacities for the use of DC-TDIP methods for in-situ soil corrosivity assessments. In particular a distribution of self potential gradients is observed along the pipeline right-of-way suggesting zones of active electrolysis and enhanced external corrosivity.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to explore the applicability of Capacitively-Coupled Resistivity (CCR) as an improvement on traditional drilling and sampling methods for subsurface soil investigations. The CCR method could be used to identify critical locations for drilling and sampling such as expansive clay layers and anomalies (sinkholes, unknown landfills, etc.) rather than uniformly sampling across a site. CCR surveys were performed at Alpena, Arkansas along a highway expansion project changing US 62 from a two lane to four lane highway, and at Alton, Illinois along the Mel Price Levee, a 5.2 mile levee along a portion of the Mississippi River. A geometrics OhmMapper was used to acquire the CCR resistivity data with emphasis placed on investigating the near surface material properties (0-5 meters). The Alpena site was comprised of silt, clay and suspected bedrock with a deep water table, while the Alton site was comprised of clay and sand with a shallow water table. The survey was performed at both sides of the highway at Alpena and along the landside and riverside of the levee at Alton. The resulting resistivity plots revealed continuous subsurface soil information and emphases the impact of water level when interpreting the resistivity results as significant changes in the resistivity ranges for fine and coarse grain soils are possible for different moisture conditions. The measured soil resistivity values at the Alpena site with a deep water table were much higher than the values at the Alton site with the shallow water table. The accuracy of the CCR method was assessed by identifying the number of locations where the soil type predicted by CCR matched the existing boring and CPT logs. Resistivity from CCR was able to distinguish between areas of predominantly fine-grained material and coarse-grained material but limitations exist in separating soils with similar grain sizes (silts and clays)

Historically, these choices are based on data from other industries (e.g., gas and oil) and may not be suitable for the water industry. Corrosion of metallic pipes can be caused by a variety of mechanisms, each of which requires a different solution. Determining which corrosion mechanism is at work is not a simple matter, because the resulting pipe damage looks similar for all of them. The failure to properly identify corrosion sources may produce prevention systems that are ineffective or do not last. For example, it is not effective to install an anode bag on a main that has a bacteriological corrosion problem. Similarly, an anode bag installed to reduce corrosion caused by a stray impressed current would be quickly used up and would provide only short-term protection. Much recent research on corrosion has focused on internal corrosion, primarily related to water-quality issues, such as lead and copper control and red water. This project will examine external corrosion, which affects the structural integrity of the pipe and makes it vulnerable to leaks and breakage. After identifying the causes of external corrosion, the study will find economical solutions for each type of corrosion and verify them through field trials.

According to the literature, corrosion is classified to two types: uniform and localized corrosion. Intervention in either in the alloy environment or in the alloy structure can provide the corrosion protection of metallic materials. Furthermore, the interference in the metal alloy environment can be conducted with the utilization of cathodic or anodic protection via the corresponding inhibitors. Therefore, the most common categorization is cathodic, anodic, and mixed-type inhibitors, taking into account which half-reaction they suppress during corrosion phenomena. The majority of the organic inhibitors are of mixed type and perform through chemisorption. In order to update the field of the corrosion protection of metal and metal alloys with the use of organic inhibitors, a Special Issue entitled "Advances in Organic Corrosion Inhibitors and Protective Coatings" is introduced. This book gathers and reviews a collection of ten contributions (nine articles and one review), from authors from Europe, Asia, and Africa, that were accepted for publication in this Special Issue of Applied Sciences.
