Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Injection Molding Process Modelling presents the application of CAE, statistics and AI in defect identification, control, and optimization of injection molding process for quality production. It showcases CAE in determining the optimal placement of injection points, designing cooling channels, and ensuring that the mold will produce parts with the desired specifications. The book illustrates the capability of the CAE tools to simulate molten plastic flow within a mold during the injection molding process. Explaining how the use of CAE, statistical tools and AI enhances efficiency, accuracy, and collaboration, the book explores the contributions to injection molding in product design and visualization; prototyping and testing; mold design; and analysis and simulation. It emphasizes the integration of statistical tools for optimized efficiency and waste reduction, including statistical process control (SPC), Design of Experiments (DOE), Regression Analysis, Capability Indices, Interaction effects, and many more. The book also illustrates the predictive modelling of typical injection molded product defects using intelligent algorithms. The book will interest industry professionals and engineers working in manufacturing, production, automation, and quality control.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sensitivity-based gate location algorithm for optimal filling of molds in the resin-transfer molding (RTM) process is described in this report. In the RTM process for composite manufacturing, a fiber preform is placed inside a mold and resin is injected into it under high pressures through inlets or gates. Finite-element-based resin-flow simulation codes have been successfully used for modeling and analysis of the process. This process is increasingly used for the manufacture of three-dimensional (3-D) composite parts with material and geometric complexities. In such cases, the locations of the gates cannot be determined easily except by expensive trial and error, both experimentally and computationally. Hence, systematic search methods working in tandem with flow simulations are necessary to determine gate locations for optimal filling. In this report, the governing equation for pressure along with the boundary conditions is differentiated with respect to the coordinates of each gate. The resulting system of pressure sensitivity fields is solved in parallel with the flow problem. The sensitivity fields are used to compute the gradients of the fill time with respect to the gate's coordinates. A standard gradient-based optimization algorithm is then used to determine the new coordinates of the gate location. This methodology of finding optimal gate locations for mold filling in RTM was demonstrated with a case study in which mold-filling time was minimized for the case of a single gate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the importance of injection molding as a process as well as the simulation industry that supports it, there was a need for a book that deals solely with the modeling and simulation of injection molding. This book meets that need. The modeling and simulation details of filling, packing, residual stress, shrinkage, and warpage of amorphous, semi-crystalline, and fiber-filled materials are described. This book is essential for simulation software users, as well as for graduate students and researchers who are interested in enhancing simulation. And for the specialist, numerous appendices provide detailed information on the topics discussed in the chapters. Contents: Part 1 The Current State of Simulation: Introduction, Stress and Strain in Fluid Mechanics, Material Properties of Polymers, Governing Equations, Approximations for Injection Molding, Numerical Methods for Solution Part 2 Improving Molding Simulation: Improved Fiber Orientation Modeling, Improved Mechanical Property Modeling, Long Fiber-Filled Materials, Crystallization, Effects of Crystallizations on Rheology and Thermal Properties, Colorant Effects, Prediction of Post-Molding Shrinkage and Warpage, Additional Issues of Injection-Molding Simulation, Epilogue Appendices: History of Injection-Molding Simulation, Tensor Notation, Derivation of Fiber Evolution Equations, Dimensional Analysis of Governing Equations, The Finite Difference Method, The Finite Element Method, Numerical Methods for the 2.5D Approximation, Three-Dimensional FEM for Mold Filling Analysis, Level Set Method, Full Form of Mori-Tanaka Model
