Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lakes across the globe require help. The Lake Restoration Handbook: A New Zealand Perspective addresses this need through a series of chapters that draw on recent advances in modelling and monitoring tools, citizen science and First Peoples’ roles, catchment and lake-focused restoration techniques, and policy implementation. New Zealand lakes, like lakes across the globe, are subject to multiple pressures that have increased in severity and scale as land use has intensified, invasive species have spread and global climate change becomes manifest. This books builds on the popular Lake Managers Handbook (1987), which provided guidance on undertaking investigations into, and understanding lake ecosystems in New Zealand. The Lake Restoration Handbook: A New Zealand Perspective synthesises contemporary issues related to lake restoration and rehabilitation, integrated with social science and cultural viewpoints, and complemented by authoritative topic-area summaries by renowned scientists and practitioners from across the globe. The book examines the progress of lake restoration and the new and emerging tools available to managers for predicting and effecting change. The book will be a valuable resource for natural and social scientists, policy writers, lake managers, and anyone interested in the health of lake ecosystems.

Book excerpt: Auckland's North Shore has long been known as a place apart, a place of leisure known for its beautiful beaches and relaxed lifestyle. Until the opening of the Auckland Harbour Bridge in 1959, it was viewed by many city-siders as a holiday destination, but the past 40 years have seen it transformed into a vital city in its own right. Yet its European origins go back to the earliest days of the settlement of Auckland. This lively history tells the story of the Shore's development from Maori and early contact times up to local body amalgamation and the formation of the first 'North Shore City' in 1989. It covers themes such as transport, industry, population growth and settlement patterns, arts and architecture, religion and sport. Presented in a coffee-table format, it is fully illustrated with historic photographs and paintings which will fascinate those familiar with the Shore as it is now. The book will be launched during the city's 2010 Heritage Week festival, in time to celebrate the city before Supercity amalgamation.

Book excerpt: In uncovering the remarkable, largely unseen work of early New Zealand photographers, Hidden Light : Early Canterbury and West Coast Photography is an exploration of an often overlooked aspect of our artistic past. This publication highlights the sometimes unsettling stories of photographers at work in nineteenth-century Te Waipounamu. Spectacular landscapes by skilled amateurs and professionals join powerful images of tangata whenua, settlers and mining scenes. The stories and work of several little-known pioneering women photographers are also given new attention. Published with the assistance of the Friends of Christchurch Art Gallery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: comprehensively up to date. We are most grateful to these authors and to those we recruited to write the additional chapters necessary to fill the significant gaps. We acknowledge also the sacrifice of some who presented results of original research and have thus suffered a longer time than usual to publication. The timing of publication however has provided the opportunity to highlight recent discussions and resolutions made within the Antarctic Treaty forum to protect wildlife against disease and to include responses by Government and non-Government operators in Antarctica. These developments mostly followed from the Workshop on Diseases of Antarctic Wildlife. The book comprises 17 chapters presented in two parts. Wildlife disease consists of reviews, case studies and health assessments, and External factors covers the environmental, administrative and legal aspects. Each chapter is complete and c- tains all references. Six important documents are provided as Appendices. These present methods, reviews and other documents which are referred to in one or more chapters but are not readily available. There are many related topics we have been unable to cover that would enhance the understanding of health and disease processes in Antarctica. While we ackno- edge their importance they are outside the scope of the present volume. Such topics include epidemiology, new and emerging infectious diseases and the effects of climate change. These topics are referred to in the various chapters where ref- ences to source material are given.

Book excerpt: This book is a timely meditation on the complex problems that arise when the treasures of indigenous peoples, especially Maori, enter the commercial world which seeks to reproduce and disseminate them. Well aware that such matters are not simple, Barry Barclay draws on his long experience as a filmmaker, often depicting Maori subjects, to conduct a hui, or public forum, to show, to listen, to suggest ways in which two worlds, each important, can meet.
