Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology of the Sierra Foothills Melange and Adjacent Areas, Amador County, California Available data are ambiguous but suggest that rocks were inter mixed to form the melange when the strata were horizontal or nearly so. Similarly, the overlying Logtown Ridge and Mariposa Formations were faulted when these rocks were essentially horizontal. The entire section was subsequently tilted to its present, nearly vertical position. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: How did the Sierra Nevada and adjacent lands come to be the size and shape they are today? This book covers 400 million years of physical evolution in a language understandable to nonscientists, tracing the volcanic activity, the folding and building of mountains, the breaking of blocks along fault lines, and the work of erosion and glaciers that have created today's dramatic landscape. Cordell Durrell spent a lifetime reading this complex story of movement and change in the rocks of the Feather River country. He shares with readers the excitement of discovering by remote but careful inference what must have happened millions upon millions of years ago. The basic methods of geologic analysis that Durrell describes can be applied anywhere on the earth's surface, lending new fascination to our travels throughout the frozen arctic, dry deserts, tropical rainforests, low swamps, and high mountains like California's magnificent Sierra.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology of Northern California To the contributing authors, who generally managed to submit their manuscripts not long after their deadline, took my editorial sniping in good grace, promptly and accurately reviewed illustrations and proof, and put forth a real effort to make this bulletin a summary of the Geology of Northern California that is scientifically accurate, generally understandable, and a pleasure to read, I offer my sincere appreciation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Water Resources of Owens Valley, California The older rocks appearing at the surface in the Owens Valley region consist of granite and more or less metamorphosed sediments, which are of Algonkian, Paleozoic, and Meso zoic age. The rocks are nearly impervious and, as they outcrop in a region of practically no rainfall, they probably do not contain much water. They form an impervious basin, however, for the water-bearing sands and gravels. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology of the California Continental Margin: Explanation of the California Continental Margin Geologic Map Series; Interpretive Methods Symbology, Stratigraphic Units, and Bibliography Criteria used here for interpretation of faults are based on descriptions by Greene and others Well-de fined faults: (1) distinct displacement of prominent reflec tors; (2) an abrupt termination of prominent reflectors, or the juxtaposition of intervals of prominent reflectors that have contrasting acoustic characteristics; or (3) an abrupt change in the dips of reflectors across a distinct boundary. Inferred faults: (1) small displacement of prominent reflectors, in which the upper or shallow reflectors may be bent rather than broken; (2) prominent reflectors that are discontinuous, and contrasting seismic characteristics that are present on either side of an acoustically obscure dis turbed zone; or (3) apparent changes in dip on either side of the disturbed zone. Questionable faults (mapped where obscure interrup tions of seismic reflectors are present in the subsurface): (l) a shift in the phase of reflectors; (2) bent or broken reflectors that can be correlated with known faults on other lines; (3) termination of weak reflectors; or (4) any other zone of seismic contrast, especially where the zone appears similar to and is aligned with faults identified on adjacent lines. Some questionable and inferred faults have been mapped where anomalous tapographic lineaments appear to support the continuation of known faults. The orientation of faults is determined principally by correlation from one seismic line to another. Faults are correlated between adjacent lines mainly on the basis of their association with similar structural and seismic fea tures on adjacent profiles. Where fault planes dip more than about the vertical exaggeration common to seis mic-reflection records precludes determining the dip, even though the records clearly indicate that a fault is present. Consequently, faults dipping 35° or more are shown as vertical. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
