Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Long Range Inlier is a massif of Proterozoic crystalline rocks which forms the core of the northern Long Range mountains in northwestern Newfoundland. This report describes the general geology, metamorphism, and structure of the area, summarizes the economic showings of gold, copper, heavy minerals, phosphate, and quartz, and discusses the evolution of the area and its correlations to the north and the southwest.

Book Synopsis Geology of the Appalachian—Caledonian Orogen in Canada and Greenland by : Harold Williams
Download or read book Geology of the Appalachian—Caledonian Orogen in Canada and Greenland written by Harold Williams and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 1995 with total page 951 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the Canadian Appalachian region. The chapter on the East Greenland Caledonides stands alone and there is no attempt to integrate the geological accounts of the two far removed regions. Rocks of the Canadian Appalachian region are described under four broad temporal divisions: lower Paleozoic and older, middle Paleozoic, upper Paleozoic, and Mesozoic. The rocks of these temporal divisions define geographic zones, belts, basins, and graben, respectively. The area is of special interest because so many modern concepts of mountain building are based on Appalachian rocks & structures.

Book Synopsis Quaternary Geology of Port Saunders Map Area, Newfoundland by : D. R. Grant
Download or read book Quaternary Geology of Port Saunders Map Area, Newfoundland written by D. R. Grant and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study area covers most of the Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland, including the north end of the Long Range Mountains together with fringing uplands and lowlands. This report presents the final results of surficial mapping of this area of Newfoundland at 1:250,000 scale. The work was conducted to map, describe, and explain the unconsolidated deposits and landforms to provide areal knowledge of geology and terrain as background information relative to land-use planning, mineral exploration, location of granular deposits, community water supply problems, forestry, urban and industrial development, and various aspects of engineering construction, and to determine the Quaternary history.
Book Synopsis Fifty Years of the Wilson Cycle Concept in Plate Tectonics by : R.W. Wilson
Download or read book Fifty Years of the Wilson Cycle Concept in Plate Tectonics written by R.W. Wilson and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2019-11-11 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years ago, Tuzo Wilson published his paper asking `Did the Atlantic close and then re-open?’. This led to the `Wilson Cycle’ concept in which the repeated opening and closing of ocean basins along old orogenic belts is a key process in the assembly and breakup of supercontinents. The Wilson Cycle underlies much of what we know about the geological evolution of the Earth and its lithosphere, and will no doubt continue to be developed as we gain more understanding of the physical processes that control mantle convection, plate tectonics, and as more data become available from currently less accessible regions. This volume includes both thematic and review papers covering various aspects of the Wilson Cycle concept. Thematic sections include: (1) the Classic Wilson v. Supercontinent Cycles, (2) Mantle Dynamics in the Wilson Cycle, (3) Tectonic Inheritance in the Lithosphere, (4) Revisiting Tuzo’s question on the Atlantic, (5) Opening and Closing of Oceans, and (6) Cratonic Basins and their place in the Wilson Cycle.
Book Synopsis The Nature of Magmatism in the Appalachian Orogen by : A. Krishna Sinha
Download or read book The Nature of Magmatism in the Appalachian Orogen written by A. Krishna Sinha and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 892 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thermal evolution of mountain belts is recorded inthe distribution, origin and ages of magnatism. In this volume, petrologic, isotopic and geochemical evidence is presented to highlight the contribution of igneous rocks to the evolution of the Appalachian Orogen in both Canada and the United States. These papers emphasize the use of modern geochemical and petrologic data to discriminate the sources yielding magmas, and thus the nature of the crust and mantle.

Book Synopsis Rock-forming Minerals by : William Alexander Deer
Download or read book Rock-forming Minerals written by William Alexander Deer and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 1997 with total page 790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking mainly at the amphiboles, this volume has added sections on deerite, howieite and multiple-chain silicates (biopyriboles). This edition includes results of recent research into amphiboles. Each chapter is headed by a brief tabulation of mineral data and a sketch showing optical orientation. Diagrams of the crystal structures are presented and followed by discussion of the structural features, making use of data from spectroscopic and diffraction experiments. The chemical sections include over 550 analyses from which structural formulae have been calculated, illustrating the range of chemical and paragenetic variation exhibited by each mineral. There are results of P-T experiments, thermochemical and computer modelling techniques. The principal modes of occurrence are described in the paragenesis sections emphasizing correlations with chemistry.
