Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology of Cincinnati and Vicinity It is due to the Director of the United States Geological Survey and his associates in folio work, to make special acknowledgment of the fact that the three seasons of field work which preceded the preparation of this report were under the auspices and at the expense of the United States Geological Survey. When this bulletin was begun it was expected that the results Of this work would be published by the United States Geological Survey in folio form before the publication of this bulletin. The issue of the folio has, however, been delayed and the Director of the United States Geological Survey has given his permission for the publication of the results in this educational bulletin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of Fossils Occurring in the Cincinnati Group, of Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky In the following pages the author has attempted to catalogue all the species of fossils known to him from the Lower Silurian exposures in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. That many species occur in these strata which we have failed to chronicle is cer tain, but no labor has been spared to make the catalogue as complete as possible. The number of species by far exceeds that of any previous catalogue of the species of this section of Lower Silurian rocks. And the end is not yet, since the two score or more of energetic collectors about Cincinnati are con tinually increasing the list by frequent discoveries of new fos sils. Of the species contained in this list, at least five hundred and fifty are represented in my cabinet, beside twenty-seven nu determined forms. Many of the new species recorded in the list, have as yet not been published. The names proposed for them in my manuscript (which will be published as soon as it is possible) have been given. A few species which were over looked, and consequently will not be found in their proper places, have been placed at the end of the list. A year's release from exacting executive duties, at the end of continuous service in the University of Kentucky for a quarter cen tury, afforded the opportunity of putting this project into effect During all this period as head of the Department of Geology in the institution, and part of the time as member of the staff of the State Geological Survey, he had been a student of Kentucky geology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Geological Map of the United States, and the British Provinces of North America: With an Explanatory Text, Geological Sections, and Plates of the Fossils Which Characterize the Formations The American Continent, the New World of Columbus, of Cabot, of Cartier, and other navigators, is to the eye of a geologist more ancient than Europe. It had already nearly its present form, while Europe was buried beneath the ocean, and mostly only represented by some scattered islands, in the space from England and Spain up to the confines of Russian Asia. The places where now are situated the cities of Washington, Quebec, New York, Boston, Cincinnati and St. Louis, had already emerged from the bosom of the ocean; while London, Paris, Brussels, Vienna and Berlin, remained buried for thousands of years longer under the waters of the sea, which then washed the base of the rocks that at this day support the Capitol, the monuments of Wolfe and Montcalm, and the astronomical observatory of Cincinnati. Book excerpt: This volume, produced in conjunction with the GSA North-Central Section Meeting held in Dayton, Ohio, April 2012, has a mix of papers ranging from stratigraphy, paleontology, and hydrogeology, to geomorphology, drainage basins, and building stones. The geographic spread of the chapters focuses mainly on an area bounded by those counties adjacent to Montgomery County, but also extends beyond -- from Paulding County in the north to Georgetown, Kentucky, in the south. Topics include the Silurian stratigraphy of southwestern Ohio, drainage basins of the Mad River and Little Miami River, the relationship between geology and groundwater of the Inner Bluegrass Region, Kentucky (and its connection to the distilling and aging of bourbon), and the building stones of Dayton, as well as an introduction to the geology of the Dayton area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “superbly written, richly illustrated” guide to the animals who lived 450 million years ago—in the fossil-rich area where Cincinnati, Ohio now stands (Rocks & Minerals). The region around Cincinnati, Ohio, is known throughout the world for the abundant and beautiful fossils found in limestones and shales that were deposited as sediments on the sea floor during the Ordovician Period, about 450 million years ago—some 250 million years before the dinosaurs lived. In Ordovician time, the shallow sea that covered much of what is now the North American continent teemed with marine life. The Cincinnati area has yielded some of the world’s most abundant and best-preserved fossils of invertebrate animals such as trilobites, bryozoans, brachiopods, molluscs, echinoderms, and graptolites. So famous are the Ordovician fossils and rocks of the Cincinnati region that geologists use the term “Cincinnatian” for strata of the same age all over North America. This book synthesizes more than 150 years of research on this fossil treasure-trove, describing and illustrating the fossils, the life habits of the animals represented, their communities, and living relatives, as well as the nature of the rock strata in which they are found and the environmental conditions of the ancient sea. “A fascinating glimpse of a long-extinct ecosystem.” —Choice

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geological and Mineral Studies in Nuevo Leon and Coahuila, Mexico Unfortunately, no systematic geological work has been done in Mexico, so far as the writer knows, and thus many questions, which could otherwise be at least provisionally settled by the analogies of similar occurrences in the United States, must be dealt with in another way.
