The wide and marked distinction that exists between the general character and appearance of those groups of animals whose remains are found fossil in Secondary rocks and those of a more recent date, is scarcely less remarkable than the fact of the introduction of so many new species and genera. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Geology, Vol. 2 of 2: Theoretical and Practical; Stratigraphical Geology and Palaeontology I have only to add, with my esteemed colleague in his preface to Vol. I., that the changes necessary to bring the science of the last generation into harmony with current knowledge and thought, have been more serious than were anticipated when the revision began. This volume has been entirely re-written, and differs in construction and detail from any known manual; it is hoped that every page will repay the student, if read with care and patience. The Palaeontological analyses through the general text, as well as the tabular deductions, are for the first time fully prepared for English students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology, Vol. 2 of 2: Chemical, Physical, and Stratigraphical In order to follow the descriptive portions of the work relating to foreign geology, it was essential to have a Geological Map of Europe. On submitting my views to Mr. Wm. Topley, he very kindly undertook to carry them out in conjunction with Mr. T. G. Goodchild, one of his colleagues on the Geological Survey of Great Britain. My part has been confined merely to the general plan and the introduction of the Volcanoes. The reduction of the Map from the several Home and Foreign Surveys has been entirely the work of the above-named gentlemen, assisted by Mr. Herbert Goodchild 1. I have only to express my entire satisfaction with the Map, - a satisfaction which may, I trust, be shared by my readers. The topographical details are the work of Messrs. W. And A. Keith Johnston, of Edinburgh. The colours adopted resemble for the most part those proposed by the International Geological Congress, with the exception of the Trias, Permian, and siluro-cambrian, for which we have retained the tints more familiar to English Geologists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology, Vol. 2 of 3 Exceptional attention is given to the evolutions of faunas and floras and to their radiations and migrations, while less attention is given to the unrelated features Of the life, however bizarre these may be in themselves. The familiar calling Of the biological roll Under each period is abandoned, and will perhaps be missed; but it has been thought that the mutations of the assemblages of composite life of the great provinces that arose in succession from changes in geographic configuration, are more important as elements in the history of the earth's inhabitants than the classification of life forms as such, par ticularly as such classification is still in a state of transition. The order of treatment of the various forms of life in the several periods is varied according to what is conceived to be their historical impor tance or natural relations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Geology, Vol. 1 of 2: Theoretical and Practical From the days when Geology began to develop into an exact science, the student has been encountered by guides in the form of books, of two kinds; one promising to "lead him the sweetest and easiest way;" the other demonstrating that "of things good and beautiful, the Gods give nothing to men without great toil." The earlier writers gathered facts from too wide a field to demonstrate the steps of geological evolution. In the words of Professor Suess: "It is an exceedingly difficult task to teach a science well, which grows as rapidly as ours. The difficulty is not caused by the enormous yearly increase of new observations, because this may be overcome by patience, and by a diligent study of every good memoir. But I find that many of our best men go wrong in hanging to details, and losing sight of the grand features of science, or in proclaiming popular theories, and forgetting the painful arts of observation amidst the applause of a short-sighted crowd." The difficulty of teaching has also been the difficulty of text-book writing. And among the few works which have aspired to achieve a noble ideal, probably the most honoured place must be given to the Manual of Professor John Phillips. As the nephew of William Smith, he knew the history and growth of geological ideas as well as facts; and as a public teacher was not unmindful of the aspects of geology which are of vital importance in unfolding thought and imagination for the learner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Geology, Vol. 2 of 2: Being an Inquiry How Far the Former Changes of the Earth's Surface Are Referable to Causes Now in Operation But it is still more remarkable, that in the more widely separated parts the ancient continent, notwithstanding the existence of an uninterrupted land communication, the diversity in the specific character of the respective vegetations is almost as striking. Thus there is found one assemblage of species in China, another in the countries bordering the Black Sea and the Caspian, a third in those surrounding the Mediterranean, a fourth in the great platforms of Siberia and Tartary, and so forth. The distinctness of the groups of indigenous plants, in the same paral lel of latitude, is greatest where continents are disjoined by a wide expanse of ocean. In the northern hemisphere, near the pole, where the extremities of Europe, Asia, and America unite or approach near to one another, a considerable number of the same species of plants are found, common to the three continents. But it has been remarked, that these plants, which are thus so widely diffused in the Arctic regions, are also found in the chain of the Aleutian islands, which stretch almost across from America to Asia, and which may probably have served as the chan nel of communication for the partial blending of the Floras of the adjoin ing regions. It has, indeed, been found to be a general rule, that plants found at two points very remote from each other, occur also in places intermediate.
