Download or read book Geologic Excursions in Southwestern North America written by Philip A. Pearthree and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2019-09-23 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the course of his 43-year career, James C. Knox conducted seminal research on the geomorphology of the Driftless Area of southwestern Wisconsin. His research covered wide-ranging topics such as long-term land-scape evolution in the Driftless Area; responses of floods to climate change since the last glaciation; processes and timing of floodplain sediment deposition on both small streams and on the Mississippi River; impacts of European settlement on the landscape; and responses of stream systems to land-use changes. This volume pre-sents the state of knowledge of the physical geography and geology of this unglaciated region in the otherwise-glaciated Midwest with contributions written by Knox prior to his passing in 2012 and by numerous of his for-mer colleagues and graduate students"--
Book Synopsis The Geology of the Canary Islands by : Valentin R. Troll
Download or read book The Geology of the Canary Islands written by Valentin R. Troll and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-05-26 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Geology of the Canary Islands provides a concise overview of the geology and volcanology of the Canary Islands, along with 27 carefully planned day excursions comprising trips on all of the islands. Each stop includes a description on how to approach a site and where to park with GPS locations provided. The book covers all the spectacular features of the islands, including active ocean island volcanoes whose origins are linked to a hot spot or plume causing anomalously hot mantle material to intrude the African plate, submarine volcanic sequences uplifted inside the islands, sub- aerial shield volcanoes, and the remains of giant lateral collapses. Through its clearly written and richly color-illustrated introduction and field guide, this book is essential reading for geologists who visit the Canary Islands, one of the largest and most fascinating active volcanic systems in Europe. - Includes a forward by Prof. C. J. Stillman (Trinity College Dublin), a leading expert on the volcanology and geology of the Canary Islands - Features 500 full color images, coupled with in-depth introductory text and a chapter on each island, followed by 27 guided excursions that include all of the seven islands of the archipelago - Familiarizes the reader with the variety of volcanic landforms and eruptive products in the Canary Islands and provides practical support in recognition, recording, and interpretation - Develops understanding of growth, evolution, and destruction of ocean island volcanoes, promoting temporal and spatial thinking within a given geological framework

Download or read book Updates in Volcanology written by Karoly Nemeth and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2016-09-21 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updates in Volcanology - From Volcano Modeling to Volcano Geology is a new book that is based on book chapters offered by various authors to provide a snapshot of current trends in volcanological researches. Following a short Introduction, the book consists of three sections, namely, ''Understanding the Volcano System from Petrology, Geophysics to Large Scale Experiments,'' ''Volcanic Eruptions and Their Impact to the Environment,' and ''Volcanism in the Geological Record.'' These sections collect a total of 13 book chapters demonstrating clearly the research activity in volcanology from geophysical aspects of volcanic systems to their geological framework. Each chapter provides a comprehensive summary of their subject's current research directions. This book hence can equally be useful for students and researchers.

Book Synopsis Annotated Geothermal Bibliography of Utah by :
Download or read book Annotated Geothermal Bibliography of Utah written by and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 1986-01-15 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bibliography of Utah geothermal references through 1984. These references which directly pertain to a geothermal resources are annotated. The annotations are intended to inform the reader of the information contained in the article, not to summarize the results. Accompanying the bibliography is a list and description of geothermal projects and commercial geothermal developments in Utah from 1966 to the present that have been wholly or partially funded through Federal or State programs. The references listed in the project descriptions are keyed to the bibliography. Most of this work is by government agencies or universities. Private or industry-funded geothermal developments are not listed. The references are indexed geographically either under 1.) United States (national studies), 2.) regional – western United States or physiographic province, 3.) Utah – statewide and regional, or 4.) county. Reports concerning a particular hot spring or thermal area are listed under both the thermal area and the county names.
Book Synopsis Introducing Volcanology by : Dougal Jerram
Download or read book Introducing Volcanology written by Dougal Jerram and published by Dunedin Academic Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volcanic activity is an essential element of the forces that shape and continually reshape our planet. Volcanic eruptions are a regular reminder of the power of nature and our vulnerability to this raw geological phenomenon. What are volcanoes? How do volcanoes relate to plate tectonics and the movement of continents? Why do eruptions occur? Can we predict eruptions? How have volcanoes affected the earth's climate? What other volcanic activity is there? Copiously illustrated throughout, Introducing Volcanology is a concise and accessible introduction to the science of hot rocks. The book is for those with a curiosity - and for those contemplating a course of formal study - in the subject of volcanology. Technical terms are kept to a minimum and a glossary is provided, covering the whole realm, from ash to zeolites. The book also describes the most notable eruptions in world history. "...thorough and well done....clear and often innovative graphics." The Leading Edge (August 2012) [Subject: Volcanology, Geology, Natural Science]

Book Synopsis The Use of Palaeomagnetism and Rock Magnetism to Understand Volcanic Processes by : M.H. Ort
Download or read book The Use of Palaeomagnetism and Rock Magnetism to Understand Volcanic Processes written by M.H. Ort and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2015-04-09 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a synopsis of current research on volcanic processes, as gained through the use of palaeomagnetic and rock magnetic techniques. Thermoremanent magnetization information provides a powerful means of deciphering thermal processes in volcanic deposits, including estimating the emplacement temperature of pyroclastic deposits, which allows us to understand better the rates of cooling during eruption and transport. Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility and anisotropy of remanence are used primarily to investigate rock fabrics and to quantify flow dynamics in dykes, lava flows, and pyroclastic deposits, as well as identify vent locations. Rock-magnetic characteristics allow correlation of volcanic deposits, but also provide means to date volcanic deposits and to understand better their cooling history. Because lava flows are typically good recorders of past magnetic fields, data from them allow understanding of changes in geomagnetic field directions and intensity, providing clues on the origin of Earth’s magnetic field.
