Book excerpt: This monograph reflects the results of a fundamental investigation of metasomatic skarn and ore formation in dolomites, which the author has been conducting for decades. The genetic complication and practical significance of skarn deposits of ores and other minerals found on all continents necessitated comprehensive studying of the processes of their formation, the petrochemical and mineral composition of metasomatic rocks and ores, and their postmagmatic and exogentic alteration. The investigation was based on the latest methods for establishing chemical composition, simulation of hydrothermal ore formation, and on information on the isotope composition of carbon, oxygen, boron and sulfur in ores and minerals. The development in geochemical methods of prognosis, prospecting for, and appraising the quality of skarn ores of various composition proved their merits in the finding of new deposits and promising bodies of new mineral kinds of ores in Russia and other countries.

Book excerpt: Intended as a reference for the academically-oriented geologist as well as the practising economic geologist, this book is concerned with the study of skarn deposits having anomalously high tin or tungsten contents, or both. Unlike many other books on economic geology, both economic W-Sn skarns and non-economic examples are covered, in order to enable the academically-oriented reader to grasp the full range of such deposits, and also to aid the economic geologist in distinguishing between W-Sn skarns having economic potential and those which do not. W-Sn skarns are notoriously complex, containing a wide range of textures, grain sizes, mineral assemblages, bulk compositions and structures. The lack of a sufficiently detailed data base, coupled with some unsupportable genetic models, has led to many misunderstandings and has often resulted in needless expenditure and effort on fruitless mineral exploration. Thus, the first aim of this book is simply to provide an adequate data base with sufficient references to enable an interested worker to define a skarn deposit and know where to find additional information on similar examples. To aid this, as much data as possible is presented as tables and diagrams. The second aim of the book is to show the reader how to separate skarn rocks found in W-Sn-bearing environments into those produced by metamorphic, isochemical processes (metamorphic skarns) which are uneconomic, and those produced by the introduction and exchange of components from an ore solution (ore skarn). W-Sn skarns are also separated into genetically logical subdivisions so that, if a deposit or a specific geological environment can be identified, then skarn zonation or the potential of finding specific skarn types can be predicted. This is particularly important to the practising exploration geologist because often only a small part of a skarn or only certain skarn types contain economic mineralization. In addition, the book provides an insight into how to assess where mineralogical complications may occur, especially with respect to Sn-skarns, and in which environments such complications may be expected. It also provides enough information for the reader to be able to conceptualize suitable models for W-Sn skarns based on primary data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mineral deposits have supplied useful or valuable material for human consumption long before they became objects of scientific curiosity or commercial exploitation. In fact, the earliest human interest in rocks was probably because of the easily accessible, useful (e. g. , red pigment in the form of earthy hematite) or valuable (e. g. , native gold and gemstones) materials they contained at places. In modem times, the study of mineral deposits has evolved into an applied science employing detailed field observations, sophisticated laboratory techniques for additional information, and computer modeling to build complex hypotheses. Understanding concepts that would someday help geologists to find new mineral deposits or exploit the known ones more efficiently have always been, and will continue to be, at the core of any course on mineral deposits, but it is a fascinating subject in its own right, even for students who do not intend to be professional economic geologists. I believe that a course on mineral deposits should be designed as a "capstone course" that illustrates a comprehensive application of concepts from many other disciplines in geology (mineralogy, stratigraphy and sedimentation, structure and tectonics, petrology, geochemistry, paleontology, geomorphology, etc. ). This book is intended as a text for such an introductory course in economic geology, primarily for senior undergraduate and graduate students in colleges and universities. It should also serve as a useful information resource for professional economic geologists.

Book excerpt: Dolomite (CaMg(CO)2) is certainly one of the most enigmatic sedimentary minerals on Earth. Its massive deposits of the past have very little contemporary analogues and today, scientists still do not have a consensus on how hundred meter-thick dolomite deposits of the Precambrian age (>600 million year) were formed across the globe. Recently, the interest in dolomite has risen due to its importance as a major regulator not only of carbon cycle in the past, but also as an important host rock in ongoing projects of CO2 underground storage and sequestration. The growing demand for primary resources also impacted the interest in dolomite and dolomitic rocks, which are now widely used in numerous technological and industrial applications. For these reasons, there is a steady increase of scientific publications linked to dolomite problematics. A Web of Science search (all databases) with "dolomite" as the topic yielded more than 13,000 papers published from 1950-2015; 4,200 of them were published over the last five years and 8,800 were produced during preceding sixty years. The number of publications concerning use of dolomite in the field of engineering and physical science (non-earth sciences) increased five-fold from the mid-1990s to 2000s, and nowadays contributes to more than a half of all publications on dolomite. This clearly illustrates the rising interest in dolomite for technological applications over the past decade. This book incorporates a large number of disciplines, from geology to chemical engineering of catalysts. It illuminates three main aspects of dolomite as a major sedimentary rock and important technological material: (i) natural occurrence; (ii) laboratory study of dolomite dissolution and precipitation and (iii) applications in various technological aspects. The first two chapters address geological and mineralogical aspects of dolomite deposits in the natural environment (Wagner et al.; Marfil et al). The next three chapters cover the reactivity of dolomite in an aqueous solution (Pokrovsky and Schott), the synthesis of dolomite analogues from aqueous solution (Pina et al) and laboratory precipitation of Mg-bearing carbonates and protodolomite from homogeneous supersaturated solutions (Pokrovsky). Finally, the last two chapters (Ivanets et al., Ryabkov et al.) present the application of dolomite for numerous technological and engineering purposes.

There are a number of factors which motivated us to write this text and which may provide an answer to this question. Firstly our colleagues are predominantly mining engineers and minerals processing technologists, which provides us with a different perspective of ore deposits from many academic geologists. Secondly we have found that most existing texts are either highly theoretical or merely descriptive: we have attempted to examine the practical implications of the geological setting and genetic models of particular ore deposit types. We have written the text primarily for undergraduates who are taking options in Economic Geology towards the end of a Degree Course in Geology. However, we hope that the text will also prove valuable to geologists working in the mining industry. The text is to a large extent based on a review of the existing literature up to the end of 1984. However, we have visited most of the mining districts cited in the text and have also corresponded extensively with geologists to extend our knowledge beyond the published literature. Nonetheless writing a text-book on Ore Deposits is a demanding task and it is inevitable that sins of both omission and commission have been committed. We would therefore welcome comments from readers which can be incorporated in future editions. Book excerpt: The behaviour of gold in sedimentary, magmatic and postmagmatic processes are studied and 40 gold-bearing minerals including ten which were recently discovered are described. The results are presented of new experimental studies on phase relations in gold-sulphide systems. The solubility & form of gold migration in high-temperature chloride, sulphide and arsenic solutions are determined. Based on the new data, the genesis of gold deposits is studied and a geochemical classification proposed. This book is designed for specialists in the field of gold chemistry, geochemistry and mineralogy and for field geologists surveying and prospecting for gold.

Book excerpt: This book is the first systematic treatise of available data and view-points obtained from geological and geochemical studies of the Mo deposits in Qinling Orogen, China. Qinling Orogen has a minimum reserve of 8.7 Mt Mo, ranking the largest molybdenum province both in China and the world. Incorporating all known Mo deposit types in the world, it presents extensive studies of Mo deposits of world-class and unusual types within tectonic settings. The Qinling Orogen was finally formed during continental collision between Yangtze and North China cratons, following the Triassic closure of the northernmost paleo-Tethys. It hosts 49 Mo deposits formed in seven mineralization events since 1850 Ma, with all the world-class deposits being formed during 160-105 Ma, coeval with collisional orogeny. These deposits are assigned to magmatic and metamorphic hydrothermal classes. The magmatic hydrothermal class includes porphyries, skarns, and intrusion-related veins (carbonatite, fluorite and quartz). The porphyry Mo systems in Qinling Orogen are predominated by Dabie-type formed in continental collision setting, followed by Endako- and Climax-types formed in continental arcs and rifts, respectively. The metamorphic hydrothermal Mo deposits are only reported in Qinling Orogen, and thus a new crustal continuum model for the orogenic class mineral systems is proposed. A scientific linkage between ore geology and fluid inclusions is introduced and verified both by theory and case studies. This is the first research book comprehensively displaying continental collision metallogeny. This literature will benefit both Western and Chinese mineral explorers and miners, as well as research scientists and students.
