Book Synopsis Exposing the Real Che Guevara by : Humberto Fontova
Download or read book Exposing the Real Che Guevara written by Humberto Fontova and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2007-04-19 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A debunking of liberal myths about one of the most bloodthirsty icons of the twentieth century. Hollywood, Madison Avenue, and the mainstream media celebrate Ernesto "Che" Guevara as a saint, a sex symbol, and a selfless martyr. But their ideas about Che—whose face adorns countless T-shirts and posters—are based on the lies of Fidel Castro's murderous dictatorship. Che's hipster fans are classic "useful idiots," the name Stalin gave to foolish Westerners who parroted his lies about communism. And their numbers only increased after a new biopic was released, starring Benicio Del Toro. But as Humberto Fontova reveals in this myth-shattering book, Che was actually a bloodthirsty executioner, a military bumbler, a coward, and a hypocrite. In fact, Che can be called the godfather of modern terrorism. Fontova reveals: • How he longed to destroy New York City with nuclear missiles. • How he persecuted gays, blacks, and religious people. • How he loved material wealth and private luxuries, despite his image as an ascetic. Are Che fans like Angelina Jolie, Jesse Jackson, Carlos Santana, and Johnny Depp too ignorant to realize they've been duped? Or too anti-American to care?

Book Synopsis Le Carré's Landscape by : Tod Hoffman
Download or read book Le Carré's Landscape written by Tod Hoffman and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2001 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reality of espionage isn't easily disentangled from its mythology – and somewhere at the uneasy confluence of these dimensions is the fiction of John le Carré. A former British intelligence officer, le Carré has captured the shadows and textures of the covert world with a sure eye for its nuances and a deep appreciation of the human factor. And while intelligence work may be far removed from the experiences of most of us, its grand themes – loyalty and betrayal – touch everyone. In Le Carré's Landscape Tod Hoffman, a former intelligence officer, offers a unique perspective on le Carré's work. He juxtaposes his own experiences and extensive research with le Carré's fiction, shedding light on those dank recesses where spying is done. Taking the reader through the countries and continents of le Carré's fiction, Hoffman reflects on the political causes and personal effect of spying – secrecy, manipulation, deceit, treason. Le Carré's Landscape is a unique look at the master of the spy genre – a man who has captured the imaginations of millions of readers and perhaps enticed more than a few into the real world of espionage.
Download or read book Cosmonaut written by Cathleen S. Lewis and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2023-08-08 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the public image of the Soviet cosmonaut was designed and reimagined over time In this book, Cathleen Lewis discusses how the public image of the Soviet cosmonaut developed beginning in the 1950s and the ways this icon has been reinterpreted throughout the years and in contemporary Russia. Compiling material and cultural representations of the cosmonaut program, Lewis provides a new perspective on the story of Soviet spaceflight, highlighting how the government has celebrated figures such as Yuri Gagarin and Valentina Tereshkova through newspapers, radio, parades, monuments, museums, films, and even postage stamps and lapel pins. Lewis’s analysis shows that during the Space Race, Nikita Khrushchev mobilized cosmonaut stories and images to symbolize the forward-looking Soviet state and distract from the costs of the Cold War. Public perceptions shifted after the first Soviet spaceflight fatality and failure to reach the Moon, yet cosmonaut imagery was still effective propaganda, evolving through the USSR’s collapse in 1991 and seen today in Vladimir Putin’s government cooperation for a film on the 1985 rescue of the Salyut 7 space station. Looking closely at the process through which Russians continue to reexamine their past, Lewis argues that the cultural memory of spaceflight remains especially potent among other collective Soviet memories.

Book Synopsis The Letters of Robert Duncan and Denise Levertov by : Robert Edward Duncan
Download or read book The Letters of Robert Duncan and Denise Levertov written by Robert Edward Duncan and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 906 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the complete correspondence between two of the most important and influential American poets of the postwar period. The almost 500 letters range widely over the poetry scene and the issues that made the period so lively and productive. But what gives the exchange its special personal and literary resonance is the sense of spiritual affinity and shared conviction about the power of the visionary imagination. Duncan and Levertov explore these matters in rich detail until, under the stress of dealing with the Vietnam War in poetry, they discover deep-seated differences in the religious and ethical convictions underlying their politics and poetic stance. The issues that drew them together and those that drove them apart create a powerful personal drama with far-reaching historical and cultural significance. The editors have provided a critical Introduction, full notes, a chronology, and a glossary of names.
Download or read book Real Images written by Josephine Woll and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1999-12-31 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During ""the thaw"" from Stalin's death in 1953 to the late 1960s and Khrushchev's rule, Soviet society experienced major transformations. So did films. In this first comprehensive account of the relationship between politics and cinema in this period, Josephine Woll skillfully interweaves cultural history with film analysis to explore how movies at once responded to the changes around them and helped engender them. She considers dozens of individual films within the context of Khrushchev's policies and the artistic foment they inspired.
