Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Battles, shipwrecks and abundant adventures await in this volume of maritime tales by local author Susan Gately. Easternmost of the Great Lakes, Lake Ontario is bordered by both New York and Ontario. Upon its pristine surface, countless vessels have sailed, but its bottom depths are littered with the skeletons of shipwrecks, including HMS Ontario, caught and destroyed in one of the sudden storms that often turn this sea-like lake deadly. Daring mariners, male and female, have seen their share of peril, and battles during wars between Britain and the United States and Canada have also been waged here. From Huron canoes to today's "Sunday sailors" who venture from shore only during warmer months, local author Susan Gateley tells some of the lake's most exciting stories.

Book excerpt: The novella is centered on Charlie Rant, a law student who's forced into being a rum runner to save his brother's life. When Charlie visits his brother in the hospital, he's confronted with an ugly truth: his brother has been rum running for the Caprice family, and someone has been stealing the shipments, leaving the crew for dead. With one delivery left to make, it's now up to Charlie to make things right. However, when a mysterious woman tracks him down, he learns of a rivalry that was supposed to have ended two years ago in a speakeasy, when the Durante family was killed off by the Caprices. Someone has resurrected the Durante name, and with the Caprice shipments being stolen and their rum runners being murdered, the clash of the mobsters has started all over again. Caught between an old feud, Charlie has to put aside his morals in order to be a rum runner for a night so that he can save his brother and, inevitably, himself. Drenched in action and twisted in suspense, this sequel to Speakeasy: A Novella steps outside of the glittery jazz world and into the dangerous voyage that made rum row notorious during the Prohibition Era.

Smugglers kept commerce alive in Canada in the early nineteenth century, contributed to the British-Canadian victory in the War of 1812, and carried escaped slaves to freedom in Canada in the decades before the American Civil War. They also corrupted government officials, terrorized honest citizens and committed acts of ruthless violence. Some became rich; others died with their boots on. Some were cut down by Coast Guard bullets; more were gunned down by rival bootleggers. All of them were brazen and ingenious and they stopped at nothing. Whether they operated in defiance of unjust laws or out of pure greed, the smugglers and bootleggers carved a legacy of violence and adventure, one that has had a profound impact upon the histories of Canada and the United States."--Back cover.

Book excerpt: During the Roaring Twenties, Ben Kerr was known as the "King of the Rumrunners." The U.S. Coast Guard put him at the top of the most-wanted list and offered a reward of $5,000. But ending up in Club Fed was not Kerr’s only worry - he had to contend with Hamilton crime lords Rocco and Bessie Perri. Whisky and Ice takes the reader back to the Prohibition era, when Canada and the United States were obsessed with "demon liquor" (not to mention the endless posturing by politicians). As Hunt aptly writes, the U.S. during Porhibition "was about as dry as the mud flats of the Mississippi at high tide."

Kelley Thelma a rich, SPRIGHTLY LADY with a nice yacht named for herself. She was very disappointed. She had been planning for a cruise to the Abacos, in the Bahamas before going north for the summer. She was looking at a picture of a body in a dingy, behind a sailing yacht. The body was not mentioned in the news. Probably was dumped overboard to save trouble for the officials, just another Bermuda Triangle mystery. The lady decided that she would have to put off going there, until she had some protection devises installed aboard. This would be done at City Island, New York Yacht Yard on the cruise north. She had no intentions of letting her world, her precious floating home be hi-jacked. The furthest we would go this winter would be Miami, Florida. The New River Yacht Yard is where the SPRIGHTLY LADY would soon be hauled out. This was for anti-fouling paint to be put on her bottom. She had a long cruise ahead. Thelma had spent much of her time at the lovely beach. It was not as nice as she remembered it from the past. The owner of the SPRIGHTLY LADY had enjoyed the winter months in Florida, the lavish parties aboard the yacht and her visits ashore to see her friends. Threats from the cold northerly winds were over for now. She sat with her husband Dennis and two other couples at Patricia Murphys elegant restaurant. She made the announcement, We will be off for New York tomorrow. Dennis protested, I have a golf date tomorrow. She said, You have had enough golf for a while, now you can keep me company. The foliage along the banks is already changing, I am anxious to see it all. Photo by Jeremy DEntremont

Book excerpt: How the Prohibition law of 1920 made alcohol, savored in secret, all the more delectable when the cocktail shaker was forced to go “underground” “Roaring Twenties” America boasted famous firsts: women’s right to vote, jazz music, talking motion pictures, flapper fashions, and wondrous new devices like the safety razor and the electric vacuum cleaner. The privations of the Great War were over, and Wall Street boomed. The decade opened, nonetheless, with a shock when Prohibition became the law of the land on Friday, January 16, 1920, when the Eighteenth Amendment banned “intoxicating liquors.” Decades-long campaigns to demonize alcoholic beverages finally became law, and America officially went “dry.” American ingenuity promptly rose to its newest challenge. The law, riddled with loopholes, let the 1920s write a new chapter in the nation’s saga of spirits. Men and women spoke knowingly of the speakeasy, the bootlegger, rum-running, black ships, blind pigs, gin mills, and gallon stills. Passwords (“Oscar sent me”) gave entrée to night spots and supper clubs where cocktails abounded, and bartenders became alchemists of timely new drinks like the Making Whoopee, the Petting Party, the Dance the Charleston. A new social event—the cocktail party staged in a private home—smashed the gender barrier that had long forbidden “ladies” from entering into the gentlemen-only barrooms and cafés. From the author of Gilded Age Cocktails, this book takes a delightful new romp through the cocktail creations of the early twentieth century, transporting readers into the glitz and (illicit) glamour of the 1920s. Spirited and richly illustrated, Jazz Age Cocktails dazzles with tales of temptation and temperance, and features charming cocktail recipes from the time to be recreated and enjoyed.
